France – Portugal 1-0, France is in the final!
France scored with a penalty kick, and they managed to have control of the match till the end without the Portuguese to threaten them for real except for a couple occasions.
We’re up for a great final:
Italy – FranceFrance last’s presence on a final was in 1998 where they beat Brazil 3-0 and won their first and only Wolrd Cup so far.Italy on the other hand went to the final in 1994, in USA, against Brazil where they lost the match in penalty shootout. However, Italy DOES have a World Cup trophy as well. In 1982, Italy met Germany in the final and they won their only trophy.
July 7, 2006 at 3:08 pm #146139PolarBearNPRParticipantThanks for posting all of this info on the world cup! I wouldn’t have known all this was going on, and boy are the games exciting.
Thanks for enlightening me. I had no idea soccer was so exciting and fun to watch.
July 8, 2006 at 2:03 pm #146111princeGParticipantYou’re very welcome!
I have to make a correction though, Italy has won the World Cup THREE times in the past, and not just one that I mentioned before. Before 1982, it was 1934 and 1938 that they won their first 2 cups.
Quite recently :pToday though the hosts Germany and Portugal are fighting for the bronze and the third place, just one day before the big final..
:woot:July 8, 2006 at 4:49 pm #146070OreoMemberFORZA ITALIA!!! I say it again!! 🙂
EDIT: GERMANY IS 3rd!!!
The game was called ahead as a 3-1 in Germany’s favour….and that’s EXACTLY what happened…though not in the way most thought. It was an “interesting” game…but quite energetic in the second half. NOW, for tomorrow!!! 🙂
July 9, 2006 at 5:10 pm #146112princeGParticipantSome great goals scored by Germany, check them out 😉
Just a couple of hours before the grand final.. I see we have some Italiano supporters here :p What about any Frenchies?

July 9, 2006 at 8:49 pm #146071OreoMemberITALIA!!! ITALIA!!! ITALIA!!!! ITALIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT A MATCH!!!!
(On a side note, it’s too bad Zidane had to be such a butt tart…I mean, talk about UNsportsman’s like actions)
July 9, 2006 at 9:03 pm #146060Jeff HesterKeymasterThat was an intense game. Zidane’s head-butt was outrageous. It’s sad, but that will be something he’ll be remembered for, tarnishing an amazing performance.
I was also cheering for France and they really dominated the second half of regulation play, but when it came down to penalty kicks, Italy came out on top.
So… the next World Cup is played in South Africa in 2010. Anyone going? 🙂
July 9, 2006 at 11:11 pm #146113princeGParticipantSo after 24 years, Italy is back on top of the world.
Well that’s football. France had dominated Italy really badly especially since the beginning of the second half and later on and in overtime as well. Italy was waiting and waiting and waiting. So overtime suited them very fine, I’m sure that’s where they wanted it to go. Penalty shootout is like Russian Roullete, they scored 5/5, very impressive. And they took the cup.
On the other hand though, France had an issue in completing all of their chances, always in the last moment had trouble in finishing. That can be explained, partially, by the presence of Italy’s best player in the defense, Cannavaro. He deserves the title of MVP of this World Cup in my opinion.
Zidane’s action was unacceptable and really, really sad. What a way to finish a carreer, the best player of the whole 90’s decade.
All Italian players are famous for being dirty, so what possibly Materazzi said to him that pissed him of is of no surprise, these guys are always like that. But Zidane should have shown character. He didn’t even show up to receive his medal. Tsk tsk
July 10, 2006 at 2:51 am #146052Jeff HesterKeymasterI wanted France to win despite Zidane’s actions. I’m sick of the Italian players playing dirty and getting away with it all the time. What a screwed up end. At least there will be something to talk about with co-workers tomorrow morning. As for Zidane…I’m sure Materazzi deserved it but it’s too bad he’ll leave his career in shame.

Thanks for the post.
I loved the whole event, but… Thank Goodness it’s behind us now. Junes are always bad/good for me, following Wimbledon keenly, but every 4 years it’s doubly bad/good – maybe NOW I can get back to “normal life” again ? 😉July 11, 2006 at 2:45 pm #146115princeGParticipantSome funny gif pictures on Zidane’s head-butt :p
July 11, 2006 at 4:34 pm #146072OreoMemberHas everyonen forgotten about the supposed “off-sides” goal Italy made at the beginning of the second half? That was an iffy call at best, that alone would have made them victorious, not to mention it is still under contention that Zidane should have had that penalty kick in the first half.
Regardless, I got what I wanted…WOO HOO!!!!
