How fast is your Internet connection really?
Take this test – http://nyc.speakeasy.net (<-- take the test - just because you have a 56k modem doesn't mean you have 56k speed) How fast is your download, or downstream?
July 23, 2003 at 4:57 am #58837DavidParticipantWooHoo! 2974Kbps. Cable Internet doesn’t get much faster than that.
July 23, 2003 at 6:15 am #58844shifterMemberI hit 1474 Kbs, not too bad for a shoddy cable connection.
July 23, 2003 at 7:27 pm #58851Warri0r 7MemberI have 56 kbs on my internet connect dial up! 🙂
July 24, 2003 at 7:27 am #58843Someguy03MemberI would say 536 kbs is not that bad for a broadband connection. IM supposed to be getting around 400. But the numbers seem so small compared to DavidA and shifter;)

Rock on! But DavidA I gotta ask what you did to get it tweaked up there! There is NO such thing as to fast of an internet service. I believe my internet should be so fast that my harddrive cannot keep up with writing to it when I download programs!

I’ve taken a few efficiency tests – they said I couldn’t tweak anything, it was at the max, so I didn’t tweak anything.
I’m on a home network with a router and someone else might have Been online when I took the test, not sure.
Anyway, my ISP is http://www.Cox.net and they limit the speed to 3000k/256k, and I’m the only user on my street, so at on-peak times, it STILL gets up to about 2800k+.

It sure does. Maybe you are confusing ‘kilobit per second’ (kb/s) with ‘kilobyte per second’ ‘KB/s’? This site is measuring in kilobits per second.
What is a bit?
A bit is the short term for a binary number which is the smallest unit of computer storage. A bit is a single digit of a binary number, either 1 or 0, often called “on” or “off”.
What is a byte?
A byte is equal to either seven or eight bits, depending upon whether it requires an extra bit used for error correction, called a parity bit. A byte is sufficient for storing a single character of information, such as a letter or number.Seeing how I have a 768 kilobit downstream, I can download with only about 96 kilobytes per second (768 / 8 = 96).So, 2974 kb/s is only about 372 KB/s. I have seen cable lines transfer much faster than that.

Your download speed : 841495 bps, or 841 kbps.
A 102.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 110497 bps, or 110 kbps. With opennap, apache, kazaa and various other rubbish running. :]

Jan,
I know the difference between kilobyte and kilobit. There was no reason (That I see – although I’m just a dumb 15yo) for you to bring that into the discussion – that site measures it in Kilobits and I did NOT confuse it with anything else. See here. There are four ISPs listed that have a faster downstream transfer rate.
My download speed in Kilobytes per second is around 370-380 (Max) – depending on host server speed.

Okay! No need to get overheated. 😉 Many people don’t know this difference. Yesterday a friend (on the same ISP as me) told me he downloaded a file at 600 KB/s. He made a screenshot (of course) and I bet you can guess what I figured out not too long after he sent it… 😉
But, I wasn’t trying to pick on you at all, although maybe I sounded a bit like it – which I am sorry for.
July 24, 2003 at 6:23 pm #58845coolguyj2Membermine is 12Kilobytes per sec…. slow but if you consider India it is really rocking….
And also, there are no s/w which can tweak your speed… they just claim that…. like some of them observe ur site habits and download the site’s main page into your HDD and when u click it, it opens in a flash…. Atleast I know this…August 16, 2003 at 3:36 am #58853TigerbladeParticipantwow… i feel really slow now… although i’ve known this for a while. 🙁 here at home this summer i’m running at only usually 44.0 Kbps, on a good day. i’d just like to state that modems suck. just in case you didnt catch that, i’ll say it again – modems suck. once i get back to school, it’ll be a T1 connection, so its a lot faster (i’m not sure the exact kbps rate, but i intend to find out…)
August 16, 2003 at 10:11 pm #58850witchMembermine is 85 kbps
August 17, 2003 at 12:06 am #58828FaizanMemberMy download speed: 42 kbps
My upload speed: 23 kbpsProbably slower than everyone else.
Edit: Re-tested
