MemberPROBLEM:
Your friend has AIM MOBILE IM FORWARDING setup on a AIM screename and you thought it would be nice to do the same. You sign up with the provided link that your friend’s AIM MOBILE IM FORWARDING sends to you and sign up. You see that when your offline, your online still with the MOBILE ICON next to your screename. Your friend’s don’t know, and they message you and all your messages are forwarded to your cell phone. HOW DO YOU TURN THIS MADNESS OFF?
SOLUTION 1 founded by fuzzface00:
If you were to search on AIM.com or call AOL or whatever, none of them know where to turn it off. Lucky, with the help of BigBlueBall Forums and fuzzface00, the solution is here. you go to http://alerts.aol.com/IFDevice/index.psp .. sign in with the SN u don’t want the IM FORWARDING on .. and you UNCHECK the box that says IMFORWARDING OK.
SOLUTION2 founded by snh1082:
Sign in with the screen name you’re having problems with. This works for an AIM screenname!!! It will bring up the IM Forwarding Set Up page with your cell number already written, and the box already checked. Uncheck the box, and click ok. The web page will try to close itself, click ok, and you are DONE!
I could of told you the solution 2, but that didn’t solve my problem. When I signed up, the cell phone # was not listed in the options part so it was of no use to me.Anyways, 2 solutions .. one has to work. if not keep posting.
The only question I got is why in the world do you guys still sign up?March 5, 2003 at 12:59 am #64161Jeff Hester
KeymasterYou should contact your mobile provider. I use AT&T, and with my cell phone they have special codes to sign in or out. I agree that it gets frustrating very quickly when people IM you not realizing that it takes five minutes just to key in a simple reply! 😀
You should have either a similar code to sign out, or other option so that you’re not online with AIM 24/7 on your mobile.
If you can’t figure it out, let me know your mobile provider (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) and the model of your phone and I’ll see if I can provide more specific help.

KeymasterIt sounds like you may have setup AOL’s IM Forwarding, which provides the ability to “forward” instant messages to cell phones that don’t explicitly support AIM Mobile (you are correct, Cingular is not on the list).
The nasty thing about IM forwarding is that if you’ve set it up, you could end up receiving IMs on your mobile whenever you’re not logged in at your computer (which could be a lot of the time). And yes, you might have to pay for each IM you receive, even if you don’t reply!
You should be able to discontinue IM Forwarding by changing your preferences at alerts.aol.com. You can also change the hours during which you will accept forwarded IMs, so you could use the service, but restrict it to a very small time period so you’re not overwhelmed with messages.

Memberthats exactly what my issue is .. the damn IM FORWARDING .. the problem is i’ve tried to go to the alerts.aol.com preferences and the odd thing is MY CELL PHONE ISN’T EVEN SETUP .. and when i click to add my cell phone i get the error
We are sorry, but an internal error in our Web server prevents us from fulfilling your request.
If you continue to receive this error message, please wait for the server administrators to resolve the problem, and try again later.
and thats been like 4 weeks already .. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO NOW .. i’ve tried to setup the hours not to accept it .. but that doesn’t work .. i still get msgs that are assigned when i don’t want to (my guess is because my cellphone isn’t even added) ..
at first i thought this was an AOL issue since it’s alerts.aol.com .. so i called AOL and they said no it’s not .. and to leave feedback on AIM.COM .. that brought me nothing .. i doubt they even read those feedback sheets ..
i seriously want to get rid of this .. BUT HOW !!!

MemberOK, I had this turned on a test account. I’ve managed to turn it off. Hopefully this information will help you.
Try going to http://alerts.aol.com/IFDevice/index.psp and following the prompts.
Since I recall being able to sign up for this in a previous version of AIM, and now I can’t find it, I suspect you have been a victim of the “disappearing/reappearing” AIM feature.
Good Luck!

MemberI had the same problem and my carrier is Sprint PCS, which is on the list of carriers. I called sprint and the told me it was an issue with AOL and that I needed to call AOL but they were unable to give me the number for AOL so they told me to leave feedback, which was never responded to. I am not sure how it got shut off on my phone but when i sign off of aim it doesnt log me onto the mobile one anymore. I think it is because I changed my password but I am not sure. I do get charged for the messages I get, which i think is a little riduculous considering AOL is free and Sprint says they cannot stop it. If Sprint can charge me they should be able to shut it off. At least its fixed for now.

MemberI have a similar but not identical problem. so here’s the deal. i dont’ mind the IM forwards when i’m signed off. but lately, that’s not all it does. recently i’ve noticed that no one’s been commenting on my away message. after a little detective work (i signed on another screenname and IMed myself), i discovered that when someone IMs me and my away message is on, it goes directly to my cell phone. i don’t want this at all! when i’m “offline” that’s ok, but when i’m away, it’s not. how can i fix this?

ParticipantI have US Cellular. I really want to get rid of this because it’s annoying for people not to be able to tell when i’m online or not. I tried to do the thing where I went to the link and unchecked the box. I did that about 6 times but it didn’t work. I sent myself messages still. I will just go to the provider unless someone else knows an easy way to get rid of this besides the link. Thanks.

ParticipantOk i went to my phone company, and I asked them to get rid of the im forwarding. They told me that they don’t know anything about it, and that i have to talk to aol about it. I’m afraid that they’re just going to have to get rid of my text messaging to get rid of this. If anyone knows any ways to solve this please let me know!

Membercrap .. i seriously hate AOL/AIM for implimenting this stupid thing .. anyways your problem .. it seems that you want to show that your on your mobile or when your not (so at least people will know when not to contact u)?
see if this is what you want.
go to preferences –> privacy
make sure you check [ x ] …. that i’m using a mobile devicewhen thats checked and your offline it’ll show a little mobile thing next to your icon .. is that what u want?
also don’t bother calling AOL/AIM .. AIM is not supported by AOL as it is just a internet thing. there is ABSOLUTELY no support for it. and if your stuck with a cellular phone that doesn’t have AIM/INTERNET implimented in it, your cellular service won’t do anything about it.
i will look into more options to get rid of this annoying problem.

MemberWell, my previous problem has not been corrected, but i just wanted to note that the folks over at AIM added a new feature to the IM forwarding yesterday: messages that are too long to be sent via text message are now being broken up into multiple parts instead of being cut off. Very cool stuff.
Now if i could only turn off away message forwarding.
