So no one’s posted here in a while, but i figured i’d try anyway… 🙂
I have the same problem with my music skipping. I have downloaded and used Winamp. I have also tried using Windows Media Player. But not only my MP3s skip. My cd’s skip when i play them in my cd player. I know i have sufficient ram (512 mb) so what could the problem be?
Nobody has posted recently because effectively the question was answered. the member did not have enough memory.
Provide details of your computer, OS and background running tasks. There is insuficient information provided to reply with a useful post.October 13, 2003 at 12:02 pm #68086prncssshckrMemberSorry about reviving this
Well my computer specs are this:
Windows XP Pro
200 gig hdd
512 mb ram
2 gig processorThe only background tasks I have running are AIM, PC-Cillin, and the mixer that came with my soundcard software. I have tried to update the driver but that only makes it worse. So I used the lovely rollback driver feature in XP. I have also checked to see if there were any software or hardware conflicts. There appear to be none. I am very confused as to why the sound skips as it does. I have burned some of the MP3s onto cds and played them in my cd player(not on my computer, but rather my discman) and they don’t skip or anything. So I know its a conflict with my computer. I’m just not sure where the conflict lies. Could it have something to do with the built in soundcard on my motherboard? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
October 13, 2003 at 12:39 pm #68065rustedtightMemberDont apologise, revival is good if the problem remains and a fix has not been posted. Your problem is real.
The soundchip on the computer is fine because you can burn good CD’s(obviously from MP3’s that ‘skip’ when played via the computer) That in itself helps when know.
Except it was a dumb remark, the soundchip is not used during a burn. Maybe its time to buy a pc soundcard?? (If you shower, dress-up n thro promises of a lunch around its possible some good soul will lend you one, I hate spending money n I really do like to dress-up. LOL).Your memory is sufficient providing it is not being hogged by another application.
* are you also running memory intensive applications when trying to listen to the MP3’s?
* are you also downloading 3 or more tracks via peer 2 peer software.. Kazaa etc?
* have you tried installing another player?
* during boot up does the screen show all 512 of the memory being tested or reported as available?
* is your antivirus software up to date? updated within the last 10 days.
* naturally there is the much loved 3 finger salute from win 95/8…which will bring up a window showing what processes are running and the demand they are placing on the CPU.October 13, 2003 at 1:02 pm #68085prncssshckrMemberSo many questions to answer….
I am not running any memory intensive programs while tryin to listen to mp3s.
I am not downloading any mp3s either. (I use WinMx, not Kazaa.)
I installed Winamp and tried it. I have also tried using Windows Media Player. Neither one seems to help.
Yes, it shows all 512 as being available.
I just updated my virus scanner 2 days ago and ran a scan. The comp is clean. 🙂
I’m only using on average 4% of my CPU.Does this help any? I am so frustrated…I just want to listen to my music while doing homework without the music skipping.
thanks for the fast replies 🙂
October 13, 2003 at 1:31 pm #68064rustedtightMemberThe sound chip on the motherboard is terminal. Read my previous reply …prolly updated after your last post. 😀
October 14, 2003 at 6:55 am #68088prncssshckrMemberthanks. i’m really confused now though. it worked fine when i had my old hdds in. as soon as i put in this new one it started acting up. and the motherboard is almost brand new. less than a year old. but you think the soundcard on the board is busted?
October 14, 2003 at 2:45 pm #68063rustedtightMemberQuote:quote:it worked fine when i had my old hdds in. as soon as i put in this new one it started acting up.Oh great!, you keep shifting the goal posts. Is there anything else you have not disclosed that is relavent?
The problem is NOW obviously the HDD.Meanwhile, would you clean up your signature by removing the stray ‘T’ and the following blank line.
October 14, 2003 at 8:39 pm #68081Someguy03MemberI would also like to point out that some songs are fakes, and skip. The ones released by the RIAA usually just go into a series of wierd sounds several times in the song but i have heard some that just skip randomly. I know this isnt the problem but im just pointing it out 🙂
October 14, 2003 at 10:16 pm #68084prncssshckrMemberThe hard drive is brand new. And as I have said earlier, the songs play fine when I burn them onto a CD. And my signature is my signature. The ‘stray’ T is for my name. When the songs skip, they act as if the computer is too busy doing something else.

Yep… got a few of those me self. Damn annoying for sure.
October 15, 2003 at 5:05 am #68080Someguy03MemberYa, you can avoid these by checking the bandwith level of the downloads. Most of the RIAA files have a “too good to be true” bandwith, usually above 2500.

As you have already stated …
Quote:quote: it worked fine when i had my old hdds in. as soon as i put in this new one it started acting up.Would lead you logically to assume it is the new HDD that is the problem, unless ofcourse there is some other change you have not told us about.
Question the person who installed the HDD, what is their experience level? Was there any other change made at or around that time?October 16, 2003 at 7:38 am #68058Jeff HesterKeymasterI’ve cleaned up this thread, deleting some of the off-topic posts.
Anyone have any more useful suggestions for princesshacker?
I know you said it worked fine with your old hard drive, but your comment about playing CDs also causing skipping clouds the issue. In theory that should have nothing to do with the hard drive… UNLESS there’s a problem with how the drives are hooked up. Double check the ribbon cable configuration comparing with your computer’s user manual. Maybe something got misconnected when you put the new drive in?
October 16, 2003 at 12:31 pm #68061rustedtightMemberQuote:quote: but your comment about playing CDs also causing skipping clouds the issue.Actually playing CD’s is not a problem. read this from a previous post.

As I see it, the problem is linked to the installation of the new HDD.
I’m just a dumb moderator, what the hell do I know?October 17, 2003 at 10:03 am #68082prncssshckrMemberI dont think its the hdd for this reason. I dl a cartoon by one of my fave guys and it runs fine. Doesnt skip or anything. And my video games run fine too. It just seems to be the music. CD’s and MP3’s. Both skip.
And moderators are not dumb..your there for a reason.
