ParticipantWell, I hadn’t done any updates, Windows-wise, between having the app work and not work, but who knows… there’s got to be a common link that’s messing this all up. It’d be nice if the software was open-source and we could just see how it’s working, huh?
Regardless, I (we) appreciate your help… pretty cool of you to try to help even though it’s not your problem. 🙂
I think I’m going to install windows on my linux box, throw the cam on there, and see whether it works or not. That would rule out my router/firewall interferring with it. I can’t imagine how many people this is affecting who aren’t computer-savvy enough to seek a solution on their own… Logitech needs to get on the ball with this.

MemberI think this piece of software is not working with AIM by design… If you check out Logitech’s companion site, you’ll notice how everything is geard toward MSN Messenger…. greedy bastards.

MemberOK, now for something constructive…. I installed a previous version of the companion (released around 1/11/2003 at 1,621,480 bytes) and did a little bit of registry digging. In HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLogitechCyclopsServers there is a REG_SZ value labeled VersionURL. This entry tells the companion what the most current version is and where to download the updated install file. Simply write a version.txt as seen below and change the URL path in VersionURL to wherever the version.txt is kept. This can be a local path on your computer or perhaps your geocities site. The companion works fine, save for a long pause when clicking the “Show messenger lists” button, but that could just be me…. Anyway, this works great for me, any problems/suggestions drop me a line at lhachy@icqmail.com
now for the good stuff…….1.3.0.2041

<a href="http://www.logitech.com/pub/companion/logitech/imvid%l%.exe” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.logitech.com/pub/companion/logitech/imvid%l%.exeThat version entry is only for the file I specified. I highly suggest getting the second most recent version (or the last working version you had before the most recent update). If you use an older version that the one I listed then you’ll have to replace the tag with the appropriate numbers. That is all and rejoice in the return of IM video chat. MWUAHAHAH!

MemberWell, I got Lhach’s idea to almost work for me. I had to search a while before I could find an old version of Video Companion. I eventually found 1.3.0.2041, installed it, made the corrections to the registry and created a version.txt file with the updated version information. The program then proceeded to let me fire it up, but I still got the same blank window problem when sending a link in AIM to my video.
I continued to mess with it for a bit, and ran into something that I saw posted here a week or so back by inc77:
Quote:quote:Hopefully this helps someone crack this case… Im having similar problems as everyone else with an AIM window opening without a link… well messing around (im still not sure how this occured) i was able to find a link by using “insert” -> “hyperlink” -> “use current”… well here’s the link i got: http://companion.logitech.com/companion/logitech/viewer2.html?sn=uMhttp://www.aim.com/index.adpFor anybody who’s still having these AIM/Video Companion problems, you can replicate this same phenomina by:
1) Make sure you have an instance of Internet Explorer running, it doesn’t matter what URL you are at.
2) Attempt to send someone (or yourself) a link to view your video from Video Companion as usual; the blank window should appear.
3) Now, on that blank window, right click in the empty white area, and select Insert -> Current Browser URL.
4) It should paste a hyperlink with the name of the current page in your browser; click Send.
5) Check out the URL of the hyperlink you just sent. Hmm…what the hell is that?I don’t know what to make of it, but apparently, it looks like a combination of the hyperlink sent by the Video Companion, as well as the current browser page’s URL. I guess this just further confirms the fact that this is a bug within the IM Video Companion, as it seems that the link is halfway getting over to AIM, but not making it into the window’s textbox where it should be. Any ideas anyone?

MemberI don’t know about that “Copy URL” fix… My problem with the updated version was that the AIM box wouldn’t even pop up at all!
The URL I get directly from the software looks like this:sn = Sending ScreenName (Y.O.U.)
rn = Recieivng ScreenName (the person watching your video)
ss = is some sort of session ID… it increments with each link I send and is CRITICAL for connection. This value is completely different with different instances of the Companion (one instance it will be 31684, another will be 3851), but the incrementing still applies.
qi = no clue… changed this value to = 0 and even removed it with no change
li = no clue but is constant (some sort of program tracker / ID??) is CRITICAL and cannot be changed. I found no relation with registry entries.
pi = no clue but it is constant… I changed this value and the video still connected (shrug) I even removed the entry entirely with functionality intact, though there was a slight pause as the video initialized in the webpage…
I did some research on the servers listed in
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLogitechIM Video CompanionServers
and found out that Logitech, along with Yahoo!, Xirlink, Compaq, Philips, and PacketVideo all use Spotlife’s technology. Though that might not help much… who knows.*YAWN* Well, I’m done babbling for tonight. G’luck

MemberI’ve got “BuddyVision” downloaded for AIM but all I get is my screen comes up and then you need to Direct Connect to your buddy for them to see it however I can not get it to connect. Any tips on getting that to work?

MemberHello. Just a quick note: The download link you listed didn’t seem to point to anywhere that I could actually download this IM Video Companion thing.
I found the Logitech IM Video Companion download page at http://companion.logitech.com/companion/download.html instead of at the address listed previously in this forum.
No problem. I will install, test and report back soon.

MemberI have Windows XP and DSL internet. I just today downloaded Logitech’s IM Video Companion, but am having some trouble. I can open the program and send the invite (“Click Here To See My Video”) to my buddy on AIM. However, when they click on the link and the little window comes up, it will say “connecting” and then “disconnected” without anything else happening. Can anyone offer me any advice on how to correct this problem?
Thanks,

MemberOk, hopefully this solution will help everyone here. I was having the same problem, with Logitech IM Video Companion not creating the links in the AIM window to invite someone to your cam. The problem for me came when I was using DeadAIM, a program (among other things) to run multiple instances of AIM. When more than one instance of AIM was running, this would obviously confuse IM Video Companion as to which one application to create a new IM window in with the link.
A little background about why this was my problem (and might be yours too)….since a number of you have done some investigative work with the clipboard and watching if it copies a link, you’ve noticed (from what I’ve read on here) that it Logitech’s software does not copy a link. The AIM program by design enables other programs to manipulate it, to a certain extent. Have you ever noticed anybody who has their own website, and has a link at the bottom with “AIM Remote”? (if you’re not sure what I’m talking about, try going to: http://www.pneumoworld.org/ChatNow.html, which contains an example of the AIM Remote links). As with other protocols (like http: and ftp:, the AIM program was designed to enable an AIM protocol. Put your mouse over one of the links in the example site above, and you’ll notice that the link does not begin with http:, but rather with aim: (aim:goim?screenname=…..).
I realize that was a rather complex explanation, so if I completely confused you there, don’t worry about it. The main point is, other programs are able to create an IM window, and enter text in that window. This is how I believe the IM Video Companion program works….I’m guessing the code for the program generates an IM window, with the screen name you selected from the list (and a whole bunch of other crap….session ID’s, etc). So, since IM Video Companion is attempting to create a new IM window, running multiple instances of AIM, as I did with DeadAIM, would cause problems. I’m guessing that other AIM add-on programs would cause similar problems.
So now that I’ve typed all that out, I can sum up my explanation: If you’re still having the problem with no links being inserted in AIM windows, make sure you don’t have any add-ons to AIM. If you do have any, that is likely part of the problem. Let me know if this works for any of you….otherwise maybe we can come up with another solution (and if this doesn’t directly solve anybody’s problem, maybe it’ll give some insight to others who can solve it!) Good Luck!

Memberhere is what i have discovered, and i agree with the previous post about aim addons completely, however i personnally think it can be narrowed down to the aim clone option. heres what i discovered(this is using deadaim4):
to get the im companion link to be sent in your copy of aim that is already running do the following:
1. already be signed on to aim once.
2. run aim clone but do not sign on, just get to the log in screen.
3. complete close out the clone, without ever signing on(dont forget to close the system tray icon! ;))
4. now try the im companion on your copy of aim that has been open, it should make and be able to send the link.this has worked for me, which brings me to believe it has to do with addons, specifically how the clone is working and manipulating aim. if this process is too confusing ill try to help out.

ParticipantWell, as much as I wish that we had found a solution, I have to break the news that we don’t. On the original machine I had been having problems with, I know I had tried using the software with and without DeadAIM, not to mention that I never used the cloning feature in the first place. Regardless, I now have the camera on a machine that has never had AIM, the Logitech software, etc. installed on it. After doing fresh installs of the newest Logitech software and AIM, I have the problems. Haven’t even tried to touch DeadAIM yet.
I’ll try it on yet another machine when I get the chance. I’m wondering if the software’s having trouble getting a unique link for the video-chat sessions… like maybe my firewall’s blocking the port it needs or something. I don’t *think* that’s the case, but at this point who knows?!

MemberI downloaded IM Video Companion and I can receive video from the other side, but when they click on my invitation, they say it opens up internet explorer for a second and then closes it. Without the little window for the video. How does he fix this problem? He is using Windows XP and is behind a firewall. Overall, I was very impressed with the refresh rate on this program, its almost close to live video!

Memberi found the solution..:):).i think.. i noticed that while on one of my screennames, i get the same problem that most of us are having with AIM not allowing IMVideo Companion to post the link in the IM window… However, i think i may have found a solution to this problem… i dont know EXACTLY what is causing the problems, but it seems to be a conflict of some sort with the screenname that the sender is using. For instance, if i use a screenname with a space in it, it wont post the link, but if i use a SN that is one solid word, it will post the link. Experiment with this and let me know if it works out for anyone else… i hope this helps you guys! -Jay Oicles

MemberOMG! SilentHalo! You may have found the problem/Solution! I just signed on with another name on AIM that has no spaces and it WORKS! That kind of sucks tho. But hey, at least you found the problem and maybe we can get Logitec to fix that minor problem with an update! THANKS again Silent!
