MemberPlease excuse the promotion…but I think everyone here should be aware of a new product called Qnext. I am a big fan of Trillian…but Qnext is elevating the entire concept of IM becoming the center of the user desktop experience.
Here’s the scoop – Qnext is a secure P2P communications suite that offers Universal Instant Messaging (Qnext, MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ), Video Conferencing, Voice over IP, File Transfer, File Sharing, Group Text Chat, Online Game, Advanced Photo Sharing and Remote PC Access. All within one product interface where all services are Java plug-ins.
Basically, if you take the functionality of Trillian, Skype, GoToMyPC, FTP Clients, Net Meeting, Hello Photo Sharing and combine it all in one secure product….you get Qnext.:o
Thanks for listening and please check out Qnext.

MemberAlso…forgot one more thing.
No Spyware or Adware in Qnext whatsoever.

MemberI just downloaded Qnext and it’s working pretty nicely. Two comments: 1) I can’t check away messages yet, 2) I can’t change my status to away. If I’m missing something, please let me know… thx 🙂
I haven’t had the chance to mess around with it too much, but so far I really like that it supports video and audio chats. I’m hoping they work on the different platforms and not just between Qnext members.
Anyway, I’m not a IM pro, but I seem to get along with this program better than trillian or others.

MemberCool!
I am going to have our developers check into the status updates. Logging into your other IM accounts is just a simple right-click on one of the four bottom buttons (Yahoo, AIM, MSN & ICQ).
If you haven’t done it yet – try creating a Shared “Zone” such as Photo Sharing or File Sharing using the Zone Wizard (in the file menu). This is where Qnext gets really cool to use, IM is huge for us but the real potential is in all the services that can be provided.
Thanks for giving Qnext a try!

Memberdude…its a memory hog…bigtime…
Besides the fact that it takes literally 3-4 minutes to load.over 80MB Physical memory
over 100MB Virtual memoryAnd I didnt see any options to add accounts on other networks (AIM, ICQ, etc.)

MemberDude it’s the first beta. Did you expect it to be perfect? If you don’t like it, don’t use it. It is that simple.
bradf: Nice software. Though I don’t personally think logging into the Qnext server is being truly connected, the software kicks ass. Yes, there is the memory leak. It takes up 64 megs on my machine. Great for the first beta! 🙂 Updates worked perfectly. Starting up after the update did take longer than the first time, might want to look into that.
Personally, it would be nice at, for example password dialogs, that hitting enter defaults to the login or next button. Still great, memory jumps 10 megs when loading the Buddy List. Brad, tell the team to keep up the kick ass job. Hope they get the Mac version soon (while keeping the Aqua theme). 🙂
Awesome for the first beta.

MemberA couple of quick points – the app itself is 3 MB, the rest is Java and the JMF needed to run video/audio conferencing. It is bundled as one piece during the beta but will be broken out later. This is necessary because we are developing at the leading edge of the curve in Java technology and most users have much older versions of Java running on their systems.
Secondly, there are four buttons on the bottom of the interface (Yahoo, AIM, MSN & ICQ). Double-click on this and enter your user names & password…that’s about it. Not too difficult.
Third, Qnext is entirely P2P. We need a server to allow a 512bit user authentication and to manage IP presence. After the log-in, every interaction is true peer to peer and our servers do not route a single data packet. Every service is end-to-end, which means that we lose all of the headaches and security issues of client/server architectures. Faster video/audio…..no limitations on file transfers….streaming images in the photo sharing.
I will fully and completely acknowledge that Qnext takes more memory then your average app. But I will tell you this…..I absolutely freak out when I can’t access Qnext. That is how dependant I have become on my own product. It’s where I am connected to my online friends, it’s where I access my files remotely, its where I talk with people around the world.
If you are looking for a simple thin IM to do basic chat….Qnext probably isn’t the right product. But when you take a second look at the services and what you can do with Qnext it starts to make a lot more sense.
Thanks for the support Charles! I will inquire about optimizing the startup connections.

MemberIts pretty good but I think I’ll wait for a alpha release because I like using bearshare now (one of the best p2p clients OUT THERE!!)
July 9, 2004 at 2:39 pm #76456bradf
MemberSushiman…
BTW – our beta release is our second stage. We ran Qnext in a closed beta for over a year, so the stability of the product is almost 100%. From here, we are just doing simple optimizations and looking for more feedback on usability.
Is there anything you would like to see improved in the Qnext interface?

MemberQnext takes forever to loadup and I ended stopping it. I more and likely going to delete it.

MemberDidn’t take more than 20 seconds for me…what are your computer specs?
July 10, 2004 at 9:30 pm #76451camster
Memberim sorry if I missed something, but is there any way to see whos away, idle, etc (on AIM) on here? and can you veiw profiles? Its a great program, but unfortunately, unless I can do simple things like that, I think ill go back to AIM

MemberHey Camster,
Look for the status feature to be added in this week. We are just doing some basic optimization, over the next month you will see most of the features that you are used to from other IM’s (and then some).
However, IM is just the tip of the iceberg with Qnext. It’s all about being able to move & share content without restrictions.
Have you tried out the photosharing & filesharing yet? There is a wizard in the File menu or Ctrl + N to create new shared zones.

The specs for Qnext are Pentium III 500 MHz 128 MB of RAM 40 MB of available hard disk space. Also…its a broadband product, dial-up defeats the purpose of moving and sharing fat content.
I have never had any connection take longer then 20 seconds.
