June 28 UPDATE: It looks like we’ve found the solution!
A lot of people have been reporting problems logging in after installing the MSN Messenger 6.0 beta. Rather than create a million new topics that repeat the same thing, I’m going to collect the best answers and put them here.
First, before you install (or reinstall) MSN Messenger 6.0, make sure you’ve completely exited any prior versions. Closing it or signing out isn’t sufficient. Right-click the little Messenger icon in your system tray and click “Exit.” Then it’ll be completely shut-down.
If you still can’t sign-in, do not use the sign-in button. Instead, click the link below that which reads “To sign in with a different account, click here.” This will open the .NET Passport sign-in screen. Re-type your password, even if it was previously saved. I’ve found that this will work with accounts that won’t work otherwise. In fact, I have two accounts that I use. One works fine with the password saved, the other never works with the password saved (even though it used to with 5.0).
If that doesn’t work, try another account. If you don’t have another account, create a new one and try that.
If it still doesn’t work, re-install MSN Messenger 5.0!
June 1, 2003 at 1:27 am #95685jennimooseMemberhave you got a firewall like zonealarm running?
June 1, 2003 at 1:50 am #95691siriusblackMemberYes I do.
I’ve got Norton Personal Firewall Pro. 2003 running.
I’ve tried to disable it an sign in but it doesnt work anyway…June 1, 2003 at 3:30 am #95688skittles558Memberwhen I downloaded msn 6.0 it wouldn’t let me sign in. It says that my e-mail account doesn’t work or my password is incorrect. I KNOW that my password is right same with my address and it still didn’t work. I even tried making a new account. I don’t have zone alarm either, the only thing I do have is Norton AntiVirus. Anyone know what I can do?
June 1, 2003 at 4:12 am #95681detn8rParticipantMy sister tried signing into V6, and she got that her password was incorrect, tho she assured me it was. I had tried and it allowed to to sign in no problem, as it had before no problem.
She clicked on the “Forgot your password” button in the sign in screen, and answered her secret question, and reset her password, and she was able to sign in perfectly without any errors or problems. Try this method, and tell us if it works.June 2, 2003 at 3:38 am #95692praktikalMember😀 Hey all …
I reinstalled XP Pro and tried msn 6 beta but it wouldn’t work. MSN 5 and Windows messenger both worked, just not 6. I kept browsing through forums and saw that many people have the same problem but no solution. Well I finally found the solution. The year was wrong on my clock. It read 2002. I changed it to 2003 and now it works!! This fixes the MSN explorer problem too…
Hope this HELPS!!! :D:D
June 2, 2003 at 8:25 pm #95693TakkMemberThank you Praktikal!!!!:D
It was the solution for one of my friend that couldn’t sign in. His date was set to february 2003. Now Msn 6.0 works great!
June 4, 2003 at 10:41 pm #95686shifterMemberSkittles, I’m sure you probably have tried this, but since no one else has asked yet – have you tried signing into your hotmail account online to make sure your password is working?
If you can’t sign in there then you will likely need to reset your password – try these links out:Reset your password here with your secret question answer.
Still can’t get in (perhaps someone has managed to gain access to your account and has changed your password and secret question) then go here
Just a shot in the dark but sometimes the easiest answers work
June 5, 2003 at 12:29 pm #95687skittles558MemberThanks for the attempt but that won’t work for me. I’ve reinstalled msn 5 and been able to work it, so my password is correct and no one has gained access to my account. Could it be the windows installer I downloaded previous to downloading msn 6?
June 12, 2003 at 5:40 pm #95694superdiggMemberOMG i think i found a cure!!! have you heard of the new virus bugbear? well i heard on mess.be that it affects msn, so i thought maybe it might be behind my problems, so i got a lil download from http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/virusinfo.php?menu_id=1&v_id=133 that site, and i tried to sign in again and it worked! ONE try! im not sure if it’ll work when i try again tomorro but im happy for now! also, the virus scan thing didnt find any virus on my computer, but msn is working now anyway.. coincidence? i reaaally dont think so.. well yeah check it out n get back to me!!
June 20, 2003 at 6:51 pm #95695heather53Memberhey i realized that if your computer always freezing up when signing into 6.0 that you might have PLUS and that you need to uninstall that because it is not compatable with 6.0 at the time or you have to go to the forum dealing with 6.0 and plus to fix your problem…i hope that is what was screwing up yer messenger!
update: i still am not allowed to sign into 6.0 even after i got rid of plus and my dates and time are right so what else can i do?
June 26, 2003 at 4:18 pm #95697TwiztidMemberOk I Emailed Msn and they told me to clear my lan settings. And that didnt work at all it was already cleared. I think Msn needs to take a look at there program a lil more.
June 27, 2003 at 6:23 pm #95677Jeff HesterKeymasterI have XP Pro on four computers, and it worked perfectly on the ones that had SP1 installed, but failed on the other two. Updating to the latest service packs and patches fixed it, so you might visit http://www.windowsupdate.com and make sure your running all the latest updates to Windows and IE.
June 27, 2003 at 6:29 pm #95698Deft0nesMemberThis should fix the sign in problems… the freezingness ! try it for ur other problems too! it refreshes the main msn software basically!
DO this….
1. Exit msn messenger completely
2. click Start, then Run, type “regedit” and click OK
3.Then go to (they look like small folders) :MyComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessenger.
Click the ‘MSNMessenger’ key (Do not double click! just highlight it so it should turn blue)
then go to the Edit menu, and then click Delete.
Click “Yes” to confirm the operation.
4. Install your msn 6 file and sign in!
5. Enjoy the coolness of msn 6 and its sexy look but be sad at the ram sukingness that it is l[]l =
Adi0s. SLip ([email protected]) <—MAIL me for more specific instructions if u are not too confident.
feedback on whether this fixes your problems would be nice.
July 2, 2003 at 3:46 am #95696roxyMemberI did the process where you go to regedit and stuff.. and it.. WORKED…wooooohoo i didn’t think it was going to but it worked and MSN 6.0 rocks! If you have windows ME, and are having trouble signing in to msn messenger 6.0 (it freezes when halfway through sign in) follow the process that Deft0nes and someone else suggested! I did..and was very doubtful but it DOES work. Thank you VERY much!!!!!
