MemberI do not use MSN Messenger often.
However I have also experienced the same problem. My solution was simple. I am running Windows 98 and am fully patched. I also use Zone Alarm.
My initial suspicion were that it may be a security flaw. Msn has several security measures in place to prevent people brute forcing other peoples ID’s or using some other method of getting into another persons account. In order to sign into either hotmail or Messenger there are checks that are made by the hotmail or MSN servers. If I am not mistaken hotmail uses both a cookie as well as some form of html verification apart from the usual password verification. Of course I could be wrong. 😉
I have found that if I delete all my temp internet files and cookies I will take up to an hour to sign in via Messenger ( I have the delete all temp internet files option enabled in IE Explorer) but if I dont delete those files I go straight in. I suspect the problem may be in the password or user verification system. Messenger may not be communicating properly with the verification servers.
Unless I delete all my temp internet files as well as my cookies I cannot sign in using Messenger or hotmail until the cookie has been reset. It may also help to lower the privacy setting for the internet zone in Explorer options. Worked for me.

MemberOK heres my problem, alittle long in the wind but hey….
Internet Connection – Corporate LAN (with the Auto Dectect Settings UNCHECKED)
OS – Win2k
I’ve got 2 live MSN Passports that have been used to try and solve the problem.OK… lets start from the begining.
Version 4.7 worked fine, but now won’t (Get the upgrade to newer version dialog box) cos of M/S security problem.
Tried upgrading to latest which is 6.0 won’t work, get check “We were unable to sign you in the thr .NET service possibly because of a problem with your internet connection, Please try again later” dialog box.So having followed all instructions on how to un-install/register deleteions etc i installed version 5.0, after 3 re-retries i eventually get the Click here to get latest verion in system tray but then MSN throws me out and says Check login name is correct/check password is correct, it seems to connect but i get this error. WHY?!?!?!
So i uninstall Version 5.0 and install 6.0 via the normal troubleshooting procedure, again i try and sign in to 6.0 and get “We were unable to sign you in the thr .NET service possibly because of a problem with your internet connection, Please try again later” dialog box.
So to re-cap.
Version 4.7 would work if i wasn’t for security upgrade box.
Version 5.0 seems to connect very very briefly and then tells me my user id/password are incorrect.
Version 6.0 says i have a internet connection problem.Hope someone can help…. MSN 6.0 is totally shafted IMHO
UPDATE – is MSN 6.0 using a different port????
According to my firewall 6.0 is using 1161 and i thought that version 4.7 – 5.0 used 1863 is this correct????October 7, 2003 at 8:40 pm #95733bnlgirl
Memberhello,
i am also having the same sign in problem with msn messenger 6. i get the “We where unable to sign you into .NET messenger service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your internet connecion. Please make sure that you are connected to the internet. ” ive tried the above suggestions with deleting the temp cookies and files, it still wont work. im running windows 98. i keep trying after, still says the same thing. please help!October 10, 2003 at 6:19 pm #95683Dave
MemberDon’t delete the cookies and files.
Sign in to Hotmail through your browser. Make sure that your settings do not delete all temp internet files when you close your browser then reboot your machine, connect to the net and sign into Messenger.

MemberHi everyone,
PLEASE HELP I’m running MSN Mesenger Version 6.0 on Windows 98. Before I was forced to upgrade from MSN Mesenger 4.6, I had no problems at all. However, I now get the message: “We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with your Internet connection. Please make sure you are connected to the Internet. Click the ‘Help’ button to check the current server status.” There is no problem with my Internet connection, which is Sympatico High Speed Edition. I know this because I’m able to surf the web. I have also checked all available options within the MSN Messenger window, and it changes nothing. If anyone has any suggestions, please comment. Also, if anyone knows whether it would be better to call someone at Microsoft or someone at Sympatico. Basically, any input would really be appreciated.:)November 2, 2003 at 10:13 pm #95740quartermileman
MemberHi guys,
Have been struggling with the same problem all weekend as tonyhawks reports. I even went into the registry to make a complete uninstallation and reinstalled 6,1 with the same result.
Finally I switched on my zonealarm (which someone in this forum suggested) which has been switched off some weeks due to other problems and to my surprise it worked out. I would of course prefer that the system should work with or without zone alarm byt anyway, now it is working although I don’t consider it to be a longterm solution.
Any suggestion how to overcome this would be appriciated.November 11, 2003 at 11:42 am #95738gus

ParticipantWhat do you mean you cant log into hotmail? Use your MSN Browser? Are you sure that your password is correct? Even if yes, try and reset it.
To me, it looks like your passowrd is incorrect.November 11, 2003 at 1:26 pm #95741dolanez
MemberBelow is an e-mail from MSN Messenger Support I found on Google. It worked for me straight away after lots of pointless reinstalling etc etc
I found that the thing that worked for me was the LAN settings – turning off Automatically Detect Settings allowed me to log immediately on!
It seems that messenger gets a lot of its config from IE which explains why the below fixed me.
Hacked? Trojan? No idea, I did find an address in the auto config script. http://autoconfig.interfusion.net.au:8082/servlet/net.interfusion.ai.pubproxy.ProxyConfig
No idea who they are or how they accessed my config settings.
Good Luck

Thank you for writing to MSN Messenger Service.
You have been referred by Passport about your persisting
problem connecting to Messenger even after reinstalling
and creating a new passport account. To resolve your issue, here are some things to try:
1. If you are running any third party software or have a
firewall such as Zone Alarm, you may want to disable those
applications and then try to log in to MSN Messenger –
sometimes third party applications will conflict with
other applications. If you are unsure how to do this,
refer to your third party application instructions or
help.
Note: Once you have successfully signed into MSN
Messenger you may re-enable your firewall.2. You may need to update your Internet Explorer to the
latest version. To do so please go here:
http://microsoft.com/windows/ie/3. Your IE security settings may need to be adjusted.
1. From the Internet Explorer menu, click “Tools” and
then click “Internet Options”.
2. In the “Internet Options” dialog box, open
the “Advanced” tab.
3. Scroll to the security setting section and ensure that
you have ‘check for server certificate revocation’
unchecked and that the ‘Use SSL 2.0’ and ‘Use SSL 3.0’ are
both checked, then click ok.4. You may also need to adjust your proxy settings. To do
this:First,
1. From the Internet Explorer menu, click “Tools” and
then click “Internet Options”.
2. In the “Internet Options” dialog box, open
the “Connections” tab.
3. Click “LAN Settings”.
4. Clear the “Automatically Detect Settings” checkbox.
5. Click “OK” to save the setting and then click “OK”
again.Second,
1. On the “Tools” menu, click “Options”.
2. On the “Connection” tab, be sure the “I use a
proxy server” check box is clear. Because only certain
proxy servers require this, do not select this option
unless your network administrator tells you to do so.To assist us in making MSN Messenger better for our next
release, please reply to this email and let us know which
(if any) of the above options resolved your sign in
issue. For additional online help, please go to:

MemberCAn anyone help me please.
This problem is NOT due to the changeover to a newer version, it just happened out of the blue
After leaving my messenger idle for about 2 hours some wierd stuff started happening to it. I logged out and a bit later tried to log in but all I got was those spinning people and no response, no login.
Tried to log-in on a msn web site using the same passport, it worked, but not in msn messenger.
Used my second msn passport to make sure that there’s nothing wrong with the software and it worked. So I came to the conclusion that my account probably got ‘jammed’ somehow.
I tried resseting the password, but no luck, same thing happens, does anyone know anything about this problem, or shall I just murder Bill Gates
