Oh, sure, go blame Wal-Mart…:-p
I have the same problems y’all have, and here’s what I’ve found:
There’s an interesting article on PC Mag’s website: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,720052,00.asp
It’s somewhat simillar to what we’re facing.Secondly, I found this other forum with a different outlook/perspective on things: http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?p=2159516#post2159516
Nothing else came about, except for 101 people (me included) complaining about SN’s and buddy lists being lost.
Here’s the interesting twist to my story. You see, in the TOS (Terms of Service), it states that if an account goes inactive for 90 days, they hvae the right to terminate it. Funny thing is, I was away from AIM for 13 months (I was on a mission for my church and had no internet connection), yet when I came home in October, my account worked up until the last week (late November).
I just signed up with a new account with AIM, so we’ll see how long it lasts…

Interesting. I hadn’t used mine for a few months, I think. Can’t quite remember how long. I have been using it daily for the past month, though.
December 8, 2004 at 5:13 pm #107794IMQueenMemberThey got me too! Two of my SNs have been unfairly suspended. I submitted the tech support thing and have now sent an email threatening to sue.
December 8, 2004 at 6:08 pm #107797aneagleParticipantI got one of my SN suspended yesterday, tried to sign in as new with the same SN and it said the SN is already used. Weird.
December 8, 2004 at 8:58 pm #107828sdmathMemberWith instant messaging as ubiquitous as it is, AOLs suspension of our accounts is comparable to our phone company randomly deciding to not let us use our telephone number, making us get a new one, and stealing and shredding our address books so we don’t have any of our friends’ numbers anymore. Quite frankly, this is absurd.
I too have emailed AOL, and received one generic reply about checking the FAQ section if I had any questions about Instant Messaging. Not too helpful, considering I mentioned in my email that I already checked the FAQ and TOS pages and still didn’t understand why my account was suspended.
Let’s just hope AIM remedies this problem soon.
December 8, 2004 at 10:16 pm #107790matttrenMemberI hope this is just a temp. error. Anybody have any more insight on this?
December 8, 2004 at 10:57 pm #107823PMJ2kxMemberIts really too bad we don’t know the extent of the accounts and their users. It would be nice to have one site so that everybody who uses AIM could be informed of the problem and petition AOL to do something.
As much as I hate to say it, I don’t think sending them e-mail is going to be enough.
December 8, 2004 at 11:24 pm #107802Hydrogen_wvMemberThat’s how it is starting to seem, eh? I sent the email to the AIMsupport nearly 48 hours ago, with no response. the article from PCMag.com mentioned that he did the age verification.. Guess what though..? I don’t have a credit card! Not that i’d give them my credit card number if I did have one. If they can’t even keep the AGES in their database straight (as the pcmag.com guy mentioned as a possibility), what leads me to think they they can keep from randomly IMing people my credit card number. I like to believe that I can trust people, but in this case.. I don’t!
Well, there’s my rant.. And likealways, if anyone actually makes any progress, be sure to let us know. Thanks!
Regards,
ChrisDecember 8, 2004 at 11:53 pm #107830SlanManMemberI am having the same problem as everyone here, my main IM account and my other two have been suspended for unknown reasons. I did call AOL tech support and got three people, if you can call them that. The first person gave me a number that is always busy, the second “attempted” to patch me into the phone number over at the AIM place but with no luck (got disconnect after the music started to play), the third told me flat out that the last two people lied and that there is no number to call AIM tech support and the only way to get help was to fill out the bug report form which would do absolutely nothing.
Hope this information helps, I’ll be monitoring the forums to see if people have answers and not more questions.
Thanks for reading,
Slan ManDecember 9, 2004 at 4:26 am #107836zephyrialMemberI, too, had several accounts suspended suddenly for no reason – I am over 13, have never had AOL, and use AIM daily. Also, I’ve never violated the terms of service, to my knowledge.
I tried the “Live Tech Support”, spoke briefly with a “Tony” that seemed suspiciously like a bot. Anyways, he (“he”) told me to email [email protected], so I did. Hopefully they’ll get this cleared up soon. It must be a server / database problem with AOL, there’s no way this could all be valid suspensions.
Argh. *bookmarks this forum page to keep up with the problem*
December 9, 2004 at 4:26 am #107831morton20boyMemberIt has to be some database problem because even when they ask for the credit card number I get forwarded to a site where I can’t enter information anyway because my username is said to be invalid.
December 9, 2004 at 5:52 am #107838InzomniaMemberLike the guy above, I attempted to enter my credit card information and can’t even do that because it won’t let me sign in with my “invalid” screen name. This is absurd, I’ve used that name for over 5 years with no affiliation to the AOL service at all. This better get fixed soon or there’s going to be hell to pay.
December 9, 2004 at 5:57 am #107824PMJ2kxMemberFor what it’s worth, as I continue to search Google every couple of hours, more and more sites/forums are reporting suspended accounts, all of which have been dated (reported suspended) sometime between Dec. 3 and Dec. 8. It’s starting to spread…and quite a few have been “…I logged off, went to bed, and the next morning, it was suspended…”

Uh, yeah, good luck with that. You have no legal recourse, read the TOS. It’s not as if you’re paying for it, either, like you are with phone service (which someone else likened it to).
