December 10, 2004 at 1:36 am #107843SuqataAssassinMemberEssentially AOL is a Big Fat Greedy Corporate Organization that cares little for us small peons and it’s own employees, and as usual cares only about profit.
So what really has happened? The link to the ‘AIM Misfires’ article by PC mag.com, posted here by PMJ2kx gave us the 1st clue, the 2nd problem with AOL is that they just don’t care as supported by many posts here attempting to contact someone at AOL with an answer to this problem.
The 3rd clue was morton20boy and Inzomnia’s attempts to give their credit card information, but their username was invalid. This is the Most Recent Story: America Online Inc. has confirmed that it mistakenly deactivated a number of AOL Instant Messenger accounts this week as part of its regular cycle of opening unused screen names to new users.

Were they just incompetent boobs, deactivating active accounts so they could reuse the screennames? I think not, it seems to be a coincidence or is it, that the greedy bast**ds cut 750 worker’s jobs on Tuesday!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43585-2004Dec7.html
Now if your charged the highest prices for ISP service and you were losing 646,000 subscribers per quarter, what would you do? Lower your high prices? Noooooo… cut JOBS!!!!
And if you were one of those poor schmucks who got cut would you , go away quietly into the night?
Or would you go out with a bang?
😡December 10, 2004 at 1:58 am #107825PMJ2kxMemberInteresting theory…I like it.
I’m still down as of 4:48PM PST…
December 10, 2004 at 2:15 am #107793EvanMemberso when I logged onto my accoutn and it said it was blockeD? that means that it was probably suspended? there anyway to get it back?
December 10, 2004 at 2:27 am #107844SuqataAssassinMemberThanks, and BTW my Netscape email account which used to be clear and free from greedy organizations is also still suspended along with at least two of my AIM screen names. As you may or may not know, Netscape is controlled by AOL, and my screen name and password are tied into the AIM data base.
:confused:And here is another example of their greed:
AOL also has plans to begin turning its free instant messaging service, called AIM, into a moneymaker. This would be achieved through advertising and online commerce, rather than by charging users for the service, and would be patterned after AOL’s profitable overseas-based messaging business known as ICQ.

December 10, 2004 at 2:36 am #107792lbb87MemberI just had another screen name suspended. That makes it my fourth one. 🙁
Have any AOL users (those who actually pay for the lousy internet service) had problems with their accounts? I haven’t heard anything. I think it’d be interesting if they started having problems too.
December 10, 2004 at 2:37 am #107845SuqataAssassinMemberIf you read the article it says:
An AOL spokeswoman confirmed to eWEEK.com. The Dulles, Va., company is working to restore the mistakenly turned-off accounts by Monday.
I’m assuming that they mean Monday, December 13, 2004.
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1738245,00.asp
Notice that the company in Dulles, Va, is the one working on the problem.
Most of the 750 Jobs that were cut were in Virginia.

December 10, 2004 at 8:44 am #107832morton20boyMemberHow was this a “mistake” when this stuff has been reported as happening to people for no reason since 2002?

December 11, 2004 at 10:39 pm #107833morton20boyMemberLatest eweek.com story on the matter says that up to 10,000 accounts were mistakenly suspended and that AOL has posted a notice on their web site of the glitch. They’re still saying they’re trying to get the accounts back up by Monday:
December 12, 2004 at 3:53 pm #107803Hydrogen_wvMemberSunday @ 9:44 am…. no luck for me yet…
