Member😡 I so own you! 😡
I currently have not slept in 84 hours and counting up to 135, If I’m able to make it. But I feel great. Hours 40-60 were the hardest but I’m doing alright, no more hallucinations or anything.
Just thought I’d throw that in there. I’ll post back when I finally sleep.
Yours truely,

Memberprobably the longest I have gone without sleep was about 2-3 days. I used to work night shift, and during our busy hours over the summer and through ski season, a lot of people would call out “sick” or whatnot. so, because I am such a nice girl, I would work 3rd, 1st, and 2nd shifts for like 2 days straight. I requested about 3 days off after that. my circadian cycle was messed up anyway from working night shift. but I had a lot of fun and worked with some great people. then I got fired lol.
ahh yes tiger you beat me to going on talking about sleep in psychology. I have a psych final exam next week and I was just reviewing the section on sleep.
brian, 4-5 DAYS? that is INSANE! I learned in my psych class that the longest some guy stayed awake was like 8 days…he had all those hallucinations and stuff. but, scientific evidence proves that once you go to sleep, you will wake up perfectly cured. bet you felt better after you slept it off, right pal? lol.
seeing that I have a quiz on thursday, i’m going to BED!

ParticipantI stayed up 46 hours last week playing Magic Online, although I’m sure I’ve stayed up longer at some point.
I hear that once you hit 3 days you’re legally insane, although it’s just what I hear. :p

well no, my psych professor said that you get delusions that you are psychotic, but if you go to sleep, you will wake up refreshed. they’ve done studies on it.
although I would believe that you’d go insane…but I guess if you just sleep for a really long time you wake up fine. isn’t that weird?
EDIT: sorry anna, I replied before I read all of your post, lol…are you calling me insane because of my purse fetish?? lol

MemberIn science class today, we were just doing some science trivia, and one that came up was sleep. The book said that someone who stays up 10 days without sleep can suffer from permenant memory loss or possible brain damage.
My longest is 24 hours… lol pathetic, but i’m lazy, i’ll admit it.

MemberThe longest I’ve stayed up was 31 hours. I also decided to see how long I could go with out eating. I went 5 days but than when I started to eat again the first thing I had to eat made me sick.

ParticipantWell lets see. Thanksgiving last year I drove to New Jersey from Minnesota and then back and couldn’t sleep the whole time. That was 2 days right there.
Then there was the time at the girl scout lock in (yes I was a girl scout). That was 30 hours.
Oh, and about 6 months ago I couldn’t sleep, long story, so I ended up drifting through about 48-50 hours on the couch staring at nothing or everything, whatever you want to say.
With me, it’s hard to wake up, but once I’m up, I’m up! I do love my sleep though, I need around 10 hours before I can even function properly or be woken up without grumbling and burrying my head in the pillowcase.
The first sleep study I read stated that generally after 28 hours of sleeplessness, a persons brain waves will signify that that person has gone to sleep for short 5-15 second intervals, to help renew itself. So even if a person feels awake and is aware, or so they think, your body does have it’s own kind of shut down for short periods to try and keep itself from going nuts. Of course, seconds don’t make that much of a dent after 2 days.
As for insomniacs…there’s more than one kind of insomnia, and they’re not all about staying up all the time. Insomnia can also be waking up too early, the inability to shut your mind up in order to go to sleep, awaking and not feeling restored after a full sleep, waking up and not getting back to sleep, daytime irritability…and really 1/3 of the people in the country (I’m talking US) experience one form of insomnia or another in their lifetime. And it only gets more common with old age. Here’s a tasty sleep tidbit for you: In order to signify sleep you body temperature drops, so when in long periods of no sleep your temperature is lower and you are more inclined to get sick. Also, during the day, around 1-4pm (on a normal sleep schedual), a person’s body temperature drops signifying that it’s nap time, so a person’s internal clock actually scheduals a nap in the day for them. Which also explains why many people get tired or fatigued around that time. (God I love living in a medical town sometimes. Woot, go Mayo. *snickers*)

Member…You guys need to watch “The Machinist” (Came out a month or so ago). It’s about a guy who hasn’t slept in a year: http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808540051&cf=info
Quote:quote:”Trevor Reznik (Bale) is wasting away. He hasn’t slept in a year, which has led to a shocking deterioration of his physical and mental health. His only solace comes from his call-girl girlfriend (Leigh) when his world becomes a living nightmare as cryptic notes turn up in his apartment and he has visions of a co-worker nobody else can see. Determined to find answers, he embarks on a journey of self-awareness, but the more he learns, the less he wants to know.”The most I have prob stayed up is when I woke up at 8 AM and fell asleep at 11 P< the next day. I like to stay healthy.

MemberOne week
I tried everything to fall asleep.
I exercised outdoors, I kept moving and going all day hoping that exhaustion would take over when I put my head to the pillow each night.
That was a horrible week!December 11, 2004 at 3:43 am #42910colin

That was a horrible week! That is crazy!!! The longest I have gone without sleep is 24 hours, and that is just because of a lock-in. I’m sorry, but I need my sleep.

Participantsomehow I think people missed the fact that its physically impossible to go entirely without sleep for that long. your body will literally shut down and stop working (aka death) after a certain period of no sleep. like I said, and like RK said, your brain will shut itself down periodically for a few seconds at a time, but your body needs more. it is not possible for the body to go that long without a period of rest. you can say you went for weeks or months or years, but the simple truth is that if you’re still alive, you couldnt have

Are you sure you wouldn’t pass out? I’d think that instead of death, you’d just pass out, similar to when you try to hold your breath for a very long period of time.
December 13, 2004 at 1:51 am #42899Tigerblade
Participantyou would pass out, but then you’d be pretty lucky if your body doesnt literally just stop functioning. its been deprived of any real rest for however long, it most likely doesnt have the available resources to keep going. similar to if you leave your computer on and running programs indefinitely (not just sitting there doing nothing, its still being forced to process information continually), eventually the components will just fry and you’ve now got a very expensive paperweight. it’ll turn off, but good luck getting it to turn back on.
