Hatedjealousy: You’re one of those people who was upset when the world switched to SMTP for email, aren’t you?
Baloo UrsidaeMemberWhy is Google even focusing on bling right now when their IM Federation membership is still under contention due to lack of a user directory, and Google Talk frequently frustrates Jabber users with it’s lack of offline IM functionality everyone else in the XMPP world has had for seemingly forever now. WTF?
Baloo UrsidaeMemberWith Jabber having 32 million users and growing, and Yahoo with 26 million and shrinking, what’s the deal? Seems like much ado about nothing. It’s best to just make the switch at this point, since eventually Jabber’s going to do for IM what SMTP did for email a decade ago.
Baloo UrsidaeMemberHo hum, Jabber’s already made both compatible. Then again, Jabber’s in a good spot to become the lowest common denominator.
Baloo UrsidaeMemberWell, you guys managed to rack up something like 38,000 user registrations on ursine.ca, and actually started crashing my server! I had to cut off anybody without an ursine.ca Jabber ID from using the transports. All user registrations that didn’t end in @ursine.ca were deleted as well.
You’re all still invited to use the transports, but I do ask that you register on my jabber server to use them now since it’s impossible to get much user feedback otherwise.

There’s Oscar (AIM/ICQ), there’s MSN Yahoo, and then there’s Jabber (also accessible from Google Talk). Of these three, only Jabber is on it’s way to becoming IETF standard. Jabber has a couple million more users than Yahoo these days.
If you’re looking for IM unification, the future is now: Give Jabber a spin, and tell your friends.
If you’re on Google Mail, your email address is also your Jabber ID, and most clients (with the notable exception of Trillian) support Jabber fairly well.
Baloo UrsidaeMemberI’ve upgraded the transports on ursine.ca to their latest versions, which seems to have fixed stability issues folks have been seeing.
Also, while only around 400 people are registered on ursine.ca, around 5000 Google Talk users use the transports on ursine.ca. If you use the transports on ursine.ca, consider getting in touch with me at [email protected] to work out donating some money via western union.
