I’m a custom-build guy. It’s difficult to compare prices because different makers put different quality parts in their machines. I paid $1050 for the computer I built a year ago (not including software but included keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc). I could have saved money and bought an HP for a lot less with all the software but I would have only gotten a 5400 rpm drive, a cheap power supply, and other less quality parts. I still feel I saved money because the computer I built looked a lot more like a higher-end Dell or Alienware computer that would cost $2000+ and not one of those cheap HPs. It’s hard to compete $-wise with some of the $500-$800 computers if you want great components.

Of this list, though, I’d probably prefer a Dell over anything. Hey, where’s Alienware, anyway?! 🙂
