ParticipantHe is the ban evasion king.
His name is Tim McIvor and usual nick is ‘kaos’. A couple of years ago he was banned from fanatic for attacking anyone and everyone for stupid reasons… he’s also a psychological mess so that doesn’t help. Every now and then he comes back in some schizophrenic form (in this case, “James”) and just causes trouble. What he doesn’t realize is that each ban is justified and the banner(s) know who he really is, he doesn’t seem to understand this and thinks fanatic/mess.be ban him like anyone else is banned… ‘ubercensorship’.

ParticipantHave a look at this site: http://www.onlinestatus.org/

ParticipantJeff wrote:Will fanatic also have an RSS feed for stories?Yes, I am using WordPress 2.0 and am quite happy with it, much better than phpWebSite 0.10 which I’m currently using.

ParticipantJeff wrote:Maybe we can formally share news stories with them, or cross-publish reviews and tutorials? Maybe it’s as simple as a link exchange. I’m not sure what it would look like, but I want to help out those good sites because I think it will ultimately help BBB too.So… if you know of some really good websites, or have ideas on how we could partner with them, post a reply!
On a final note, I’ve been using del.icio.us. to store IM-related sites. If you’re interested, check out http://del.icio.us/bigblueball/im (sites I’ve tagged with “IM”) and http://del.icio.us/im (sites anyone has tagged with “IM”).
Personally, there are no other general IM sites out there that I visit, or even remember off the top of my head. I think the problem you are faced with is exposure… every Web site wants more exposure (who am I to explain this to a Web developer? :p You might be interested in my occupation in my profile).
I am rebranding fanatic to follow the same road as Windows Live, and it will be turning more into a blog (blogging in general being the closest competition). I’ve found search engines to be my most valuable referrer, for a couple of months this article was visited more than the homepage. I’ve learnt a lot from this and will try to keep that continuing.
I’m sure I’ve mentioned it to you before, I’m happy to trade content with you, eg. “share news stories with them, or cross-publish reviews and tutorials“. My philosophy is quality not quantity when it comes to news and content, this usually results in posting bleeding edge news at least a day later than other sites. I believe that those who focus on being the first are usually full of crap and assumptions and often in a very arrogant tone, I just cannot stand reading it.

ParticipantThis isn’t really a FAQ, but more of an addendum or update. For the question(s) about installation errors 16**, there is a tool called Windows Installer CleanUp Utility which seems to fix these and is more safier/easier for the user.

ParticipantYou could try deleting the pin list data, so it starts a fresh, because it might be corrupted.
It’s located in the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessengerPerPassportSettings###EmoticonsPinList
Where ### is a unique number which represents your account.
There’s a bug which causes lots of dud keys to be created under PerPassportSetting, just look for the ones which have child items (a + sign next to them).

ParticipantHi LordSeverance,
Are you saying that when you sign in, the emoticon pin list is always being ‘reset’, no matter what you had pinned before?

ParticipantI think you could also get older ones if you use logged/message history, as nicknames are stored with messages.

ParticipantCan anyone else having this problem post a screenshot of their task manager, and what processes are running?
Right click empty area in the taskbar, click “Task Manager”, click the “Image Name” column so it sorts by alphabetically. Take a screenshot of them, you may need to take two if it scrolls.
Hopefully me or someone else can see something out of place, which might be stopping it from connecting. I was able to produce the error with a program called Fiddler running.

ParticipantLol… no problem

ParticipantIt sounds like your storage data for MSN Messenger is probably corrupted, so you will need to delete the files so it can start over a fresh.
To do so, go to Start, click Run, and type %appdata%Microsoft. In the folder that opens, delete the one called MSN Messenger.
This won’t restore the lost display pictures and emoticons, but should stop you from getting errors when you try to add new ones.

ParticipantUnfortunately, this error seems to be pretty broad, and no solution fixes it for everyone. Take a look here for the latest information.

ParticipantSince it’s not just MSN Messenger that’s having problems, it sounds like it the internet connection is having troubles. What kind of internet connection do you use? Dial-up, DSL, Wireless?
I think wireless is a common cause for something like this, but it’s not really my area.
Edit: Firewalls is another common one, do you use a firewall?

ParticipantThis came with 7.0, confirmed with 7.0.0777. Sorry Jeff 😛
