It’s back up now!
July 23, 2006 at 3:34 am in reply to: And the Yahoo! Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148641GolfSawgrassMemberI’m wondering now if the max capacity of messages in this thread is 113… LOL!
July 23, 2006 at 3:19 am in reply to: And the Yahoo! Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148640GolfSawgrassMemberI have WindowsLive Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, and Google Talk all running just fine.
July 23, 2006 at 3:17 am in reply to: And the Yahoo! Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148639GolfSawgrassMemberI think we need to send hatedjealousy a special award for doing their absolute best at keeping this conversation thread on topic and with a degree of sanity (in spite of all the rest of us having a little fun with a bad situation). I do indeed appreciate your effort!
July 23, 2006 at 2:48 am in reply to: And the Yahoo! Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148638GolfSawgrassMemberThat article is indeed 6 years old! Now I’m really impressed with Yahoo!’s president (Jeff Mallett). He must be our generation’s Nostradomus. I wonder if he can help me with this week’s lottery picks?

Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148637GolfSawgrassMemberBy the way, I want to thank all of you for tolerating my humorous ( I think it is anyway) comments about this problem. Particular thanks go to those senior (and no, that’s not an age joke… LOL!) members who’ve been kind enough to take my two cents worth in stride.
I must admit to defying our previously held election and trying messenger login on my own occasionally anyway… LOL!
July 23, 2006 at 1:25 am in reply to: And the Yahoo! Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148636GolfSawgrassMemberLOL! I love your suggestion for people to stop trying to log in to Yahoo! Messenger and just wait “until you read/hear that someone has successfully logged on and that the Yahoo! server is up and running again.” Do we have to put it to a vote as to who that person will be? LOL!
Wouldn’t it be good customer service for Yahoo! to post on their http://www.yahoo.com homepage something as inocuous as:
“Yahoo! Instant Messenger is experiencing problems. We’re hard at work on resolving the issue and will post a status here when all has been resolved.”
Good customer service? What was I thinking! Never mind… It’ll never happen… LOL!
July 23, 2006 at 12:10 am in reply to: And the Yahoo! Server goes down… (currently now working!) #148635GolfSawgrassMemberLOL! To avoid the spectre of having been accused of “lurking” here, I’ll go ahead and add my two cents worth here. Yahoo! Messenger has been down for me since at least around 5 PM ET today. I don’t know precisely the time as that’s when I returned home from running errands and noticed it was down.
I’m sure it’s a technical problem with Yahoo! servers. My only doubt is the degree of effort Yahoo! is committing to solving a problem affecting a product that represents absolutely no income to the company. This comes at a time when Yahoo! is busy snuggling up with Microsoft in their brand new bed. I’m sure Yahoo! is investing most of their time and effort in cleaning all the carpets and polishing all the furniture so that when Microsoft makes the inevitable bid for them (name a company Microsoft has gotten this cozy with and they haven’t made an offer to buy them… LOL!), the bid will be as attractive as possible.
I hate to be a pessimist about the Yahoo! dedication to resolving this issue, but facts are facts and history is a valuable teacher… especially when it comes to partnerships with Microsoft.
I guess this comment ensures me of getting the “lurker” title removed now… LOL!
GolfSawgrassMemberThanks for the contribution and I’m sure it’s the answer to several problems. This particular issue can occur for the person under the following scenario:
– Person A asks Person B to invite them to a particular chat room
– Person A accepts the invitation
– Person A (upon entering the room) adds the room to their Favorite Rooms
– Person A (after reaching a certain point of disgust with the room or perhaps finding productive otherwise productive things to do in the non-virtual world) leaves this chat room… they may have been in the room for 5 minutes or a few hours
– After a few minutes (or hours), Person A attempts to return to the room by scanning through their Favorite Room list… however, they discover the Favorite Room list is now empty. None of the rooms formerly in it before they logged off are now present.
– The room is still active and has had constant particpation (in other words, the room never expired for lack of occupation)
– Person A starts over again with the first step and asks someone for another invitationAs to your comments about cutting/bleeding edge software, I agree totally. Unless you need a particular new functionality, it’s not for the faint of heart. Call me a masochist, but enough people rely upon me for advice and direction in the world of computers I view the use of the latest version as justfiable for my purposes.
Not only do I get a chance to shake out the newer versions (and provide input, feedback, and bug reporting where appropriate), it also leaves me in a somewhat knowledgeable position to be able to advise friends/acquaintenances as to whether the new version is worth their time/trouble/risk or not.
I agree totally with your assesment of Avatars. What really shocks me is that Yahoo presents them as a major selling point. LOL!
However, there are some new features (Phone calls comes to mind) that can be advantageous in some circumstances.
As you noted, the presence of some of these new features has come at the cost of some older features with which many have become comfortable. And those are precisely the issues I point out to people when giving recommendations… In short, it all depends on what they like/dislike about the release of the product to which they’ve become accustomed.
Thanks
