MemberI have an AIPTEK ($30 at Wal-Mart) – had to do the Registry/VFW thing.
I work a lot – it lets the family check in on me.
They tell me to go home when I’m in “Flowers for Algernon” mode.

MemberI understand that it’s agony manually switching, but I wonder if any of these registry values change between using the two cams:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareYahooWebcam(any of them?)
and (at least on MY machine)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlsMediaResourcesmsvideoMSVideo.VFWWDMDevicePath
my computer ALSO has
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002
but I think the one I cited is the one of interestLouisSheffield
MemberI only have a single cam, so I can only guess at things to try …
Initialization – I used to have this problem too. If I launched the vendor’s app to start the camera, then closed it, it worked with Yahoo too afterward. (better than the three-finger salute to Bill Gates)
I have not found a registry entry associated with the Capture Source – almost wondering if it defaults to the “most recently used” windows device of that type – I’ll continue checking, though …

MemberAlso (forgot to ask) … are you running build 1254??
LouisSheffield
MemberDo you have both choices under
Login … Preferences … Webcam … Camera Settings > Capture Source?

MemberIs it too late to return it to where it was purchased?
If so – maybe she might buy one that is supported my her mac

MemberThere’s a whole gob of (hopefully similar enough) reply threads at

After a VERY quick pass (too much wine), they describe some of the configuration issues that are required – like fixed IPs as opposed to DHCP. Let us know if you find anything.
In the event not, when I was determining connectivity to Y-Servers,
I used a port scanner (in a very benign, friendly way, mind you) to verify
each of the hops between me & them. In short – try the easy stuff, and we’ll wing it from there.LouisSheffield
MemberHey gamblerac …
If it DOES turn out to be someone other than you has been trying to log into your account,
take a DEEP breath and determine if there’s ANY HINT or any educated guess to your password whatsoever.(Like “Password”, or any charcters from “Lord of the Rings”, etc)
If such is the case, and you EVER get to log back in … change your password IMMEDIATELY to something/anything less “obvious”
(although, it WOULD be a feature if you yourself could remember it):pLouisSheffield
Member… but the burning question i s …
Do they show up intact in anyone else’s message window without them previously downloading them themselves?
(hate to say it, but this could be fun – maybe dangerous, but fun nonetheless ;))

Memberyep – still think I’m right … read in the right panel at the link
NOW important point….. unless your friends do the same to theirs, they will see the defaults, or whatever they replaced their smiles with .
The smileys don’t transfer – only the invoking codes do
LouisSheffield
Member… not out of the woods yet;)
One of the other posts about the “smileys-of-ill-repute” led to some links,
and some searches, and some links, and yet some more links …I’ll try ’em out over the next few days, although I’ll have to create a private chat room to test them in (just can’t fester this in a public one)
Funny is good, but I firmly believe in age-appropriate, so I’ll take the long road …
I’ll let you know if there’s nothing but smoke & mirrors (which I believe),
but in the event there’s something to it, I might only feel good about responding to that effect … this HAS to be an open forum
(I hope you understand)LouisSheffield

This has been enchanting, and I may have made you laugh, but it has inappropriately wandered off-topic.
Please (respectfully) delete posts since (and including) my text-inversion program, and lock. I honestly desire neither attention nor glory.Thank you greatly … Louie

MemberAre you using the current build? … There WERE problems in the past
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/twin/twin-35.htmlAlso – XP’s (firewall) security settings had to be altered to get a webcam to work in the first place. Check to see if SP1 reset these settings (port 5100, etc)
Look back through posts to do with webcams & you’ll find all kinds of details as to just what to do for XP

MemberLOL – a quick web-check only revealed the “old fashioned” type to me … a sequence of characters that in and of themselves looked like (ummmmm – well – YOU know:D)
I don’t believe there’s a mechanism for the graphical version of these without Yahoo at least being involved in their parsing. I don’t think they would go there …
