MemberLocking an account usually points to a deeper issue …
If you were a spammer, and got “turned in”, they would probably do that.
Likewise, being involved in (or even getting too close to) illegal or unsavory things could be a reason for locking an account.
If you’re underage and posing as an adult, that could do it too.Check their Terms of Service for things you may have done – even unknowingly.
Alternately, if someone had an axe-to-grind, they may have reported abuses due to you.
Or (not sure if Yahoo’s smart enough) several attempts to login with a wrongful password might lock the acount – just like it would on a real OS.LouisSheffield
MemberYM uses the BMPs for the smiley selection menu (kinda like buttons).
The GIFs are what show up in the message window itself.
Character sequences (frighteningly called “code” in the link you supplied) seem to be the ONLY thing actually communicated (the GOOD part). The two options from the link give you a “selection palette” based on the entire set of BMPs or GIFs (depending on Option I vs II).
I exchanged the happy & sad GIFs … YM’s palette was unchanged since I did nothing to the BMPs, but the (intentionally) “wrong” kinda smiley showed up in an IM to myself.
The Option II from freddy’s gave me a selection plaette that was built from the GIFs, not the BMPs. It correctly showed the exchange.
Other than showing them all (which is of some value), it really doesn’t do any “end run” around Yahoo’s wisdom. I think they’re safe.
Let’s say you and a friend had a “doctored” smiley-GIF, on both computers, and in the right folder, etc. Option II gives you both a way of seeing the impending joke you’re gonna pull on one another.
It probably doesn’t do quite what you were looking for, but it does seem nicely harmless.
As for the “floodgates”, so long as only the “codes” are communicated between users, these call up “local” GIFs that either Yahoo had under its control (the installed defaults), or the GIFs you’ve subverted to be a joke (more or less entirely under your control)

MemberLOL – solidly on target … it reminds me of Steve Martin in “The Jerk”.
The day he gets his name in the phone book, he feels like a “real person”. That’s the same day a serial killer randomly picks his brand new name from the phone book.
We all have IPs, and the world’s a big place (but sometimes not big enough).
Not trying to push a product, but I’ve had very good luck with Black IceDefender, even in addition to a firewall. A few years ago, it caught our company being quite intentionally targeted.
Try it on evaluation – I hope there’s SOMETHING out there that can make a difference for you and other victims, Oreo:)
(and personally, I’m thankful for your reminders – this is a serious topic, and one not to be forgotten)

MemberT’was entirely levity – just to have you crack a smile (as though the new build caused the BW text)
I am deeply endebted to this forum – I scoured the planet for 2 weeks
over the “Server Busy” webcam issue (yep … lower-case wins). This forum SINGULARLY posited theories and suggested experiments, and the issue was kept ontrack by moderators and novices alike.
Gotta love it 😉

MemberALL it takes to add someone is a link to the right URL. Permission is not asked. That doesn’t mean they can IM you if you reject those not on your Friend list.
As for legitimate use?
I am very close to several disabled people. Annoying and explicit IMs often reduce them to tears. They cannot respond quickly to them, nor is their level of sarcasm as finely honed as mine.I add “potential stalkers” (without permission) all the time. Pass them a reality check – most are decent, but got carried away – they change abruptly when they hear that they’ve just made a poor defenseless crippled girl cry.
Only in one case have I run across someone who’s movements I do actually watch (and in more ways than one). I have his IP in the event the police need it, as well as his ISP’s. When told who he is, and how he’s hooked in, he stopped. There has been no need for the police, but he’s still under more scrutiny than he’s aware.

MemberAs far as I’ve been able to tell, the smileys themselves do NOT transfer across a message. When you insert 😉 you see it in your dialog, and your buddy sees it also. That’s ONLY because the same smiley exists on both machines. All that IS transferred is a short sequence of characters. YM knows to replace these with the graphical “equivalent”, once when you insert it, and in the other case when the message comes across to your buddy.
This is a GOOD thing – right now they’re GIFs – if that ever changed to a more modern format (one which can also serve as a container for an app) the floodgate would be opened for hackers. By sending only a character sequence, they prevent a gaping exploit.

MemberGood observations!!!!
Has she checked out Logitech’s site for any updated drivers for her cam on NT? (haven’t looked myself – they’re usually available under either downloads or customer service)
When a product has been developed, survival mandates that they “ship ’em” as fast and hard as they can. Any included software is usually woefully out of date. They can’t afford to care, but they will make the “better software” available after-the-fact. Have her check it out.

MemberUnder Login … Preferences … there is a dialog associated with
Super Webcam. I would suggest you and your friend (both) try selecting “Keep broadcasting in Standard Mode”.Does it still freeze up on you in this mode?

MemberI got a great tool that allows a generous time to evaluate – aatools
http://www.glocksoft.com/aatools.htm
(yes – I’m personally going to pay for my own version)
Featured is a very nice network monitor, which will show his/her IP
if/when the next annoying invite is made. Write down the IP.Also, run it through the route tracer & print this out.
On his/her end, there will be all manner of routers, etc.
for you to email to their abuse department …… might come home one day to no ISP

MemberYahoo has a few links for testing compatability mode.
I think most applications only allow one thing to “own” a piece of hardware. Close any programs that are making use of the cam.
Try these links:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/webcams/webcams-11.html
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/chat/webcams/webcams-22.html
When I got my cam (an aiptek), I went to their support center
and downloaded updated drivers. That made a big difference. In my case too (probably not yours), I also had to mod the registry via
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/webcams/webcams-10.html
and
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mesg/webcams/webcams-30.htmlHope this helps, but I know it might be only the start …

Would you like me to re-explain more clearly?

MemberConfused too …
Need more elaboration? (LOL – maybe even in ENGLISH this time?)
Or is it just too much of a bother to want to do it this way?LouisSheffield

Membersorry – I stand corrected … I did not add myself to my friend list to see if the full text flowed through. You missed nothing – you did what I did, but noticed what I did not.
