The only thing I can think of is to alter the server so that it listens on other ports, which isn’t really an option if you don’t control the server.
Having said that, I have just thought of a second option. There is a client that I’ve seen before called Jicra. http://sourceforge.net/projects/jicra/jicra
It works through a users web browser on port 80. Not sure how much work it is to get it set up, and it is somewhat minimalistic, but it might do the job.MorlarkMemberXChat! I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned this one. I used to use mIRC, but when I found XChat I never turned back. I found it to be so much nicer than mIRC, both in terms of how it looks and in how easy it is to configure it. Most of the windows users I know use either XChat or mIRC. I used used to use Trillian as well, but I never really found it very easy to use. I couldn’t even figure out how to get it to auto-join a channel on connect. :S
As for Linux clients I always use irssi. I’ve never tried BitchX, but people have warned me away from it. What’s it like?
MorlarkMemberYeah, 24/7 is the way to go. I’m always on IRC. Even when my PC crashes (damned dodgy hardware) I have irssi running in a screen on the server so I can catch up afterwards. Hmm, I’m not taking this IRC thing too far am I? 😛
MorlarkMemberThe network I’m usually on is UWCS, irc.uwcs.co.uk
Having said that, I was quite surprised that Quakenet wasn’t an option, it being the largest IRC network out there. I’m also on Stardock, irc.stardock.comMorlarkMemberI’ve been getting pretty much the same problem as fxnt for a while now, and it’s not a problem with selecting the wrong options. I’ve been unable to find a way around the problem, and I’m not 100% sure what causes it, but I beleive it may have something to do with different file formats. I’ve only had this problem on one of my computers on which some of my display pictures are .gif, but I’ve not had this problem on my other computer where all my display pictures are .jpg
MorlarkMemberPrint Screen? That’s the only way I know of, and it’s how I do it.
MorlarkMemberSo M$ makes good products. Fair enough, that might be true. Sometimes. But by bundling in their software with Windows they are attempting to stifle the competition. And that is just wrong. You say that people can choose what they want to use. Maybe that’s true for people who have seen what’s on offer. But for someone who has just bought a computer, why would they bother going to all the effort looking for another program if there’s one already installed? They wouldn’t, and thus M$ are attempting to create conditions for their rivals.
I remember back when computers didn’t come with as much software installed. Sure, it may be more convenient now, but I never had a problem with it back then. I guess what I’m trying to say is, should we really want to sacrifice economic stability to make things ever so slightly more convenient for ourselves?MorlarkMemberGood thing about university, there’s no work to do so I have more time for mineseweper.
