MemberHi Nathistar,
Have you tried downloading MSN Messenger 6.1?
I don’t get the black screen at all now (although I used to get the flickering and freezing you seem to be getting).
P.S. I also run MSN Plus 2.50.66 which was releaed on 28/10/03.
I don’t know whether or not this has made a difference.Ozzy.

MemberHi again,
My problem seems to have gone away. I can now see myself in the webcam window within a conversation. After downloading MSN Messenger 6.1, the webcam settings box (which had previously been greyed out) was still the same until I unchecked the box for “Mirror my image”!!!!?????!!! [/b]I don’t geddit! However, I can now see and adjust my webcam within the webcam settings box! Great!
In the meantime, I also emailed Microsoft Support for help on this issue and I have posted their response below for others who are having this problem (by the way, the only other thing I did from their suggestion was to change my desktop display from 16 to 32-bit true color). I don’t know what the “fix” was that eventually did it (i.e either the new version 6.1 or changing the color setting), but I am now working okay. Hope
this helps folks.Microsoft Help:-
For the best experience using MSN Messenger audio, video conferencing, webcam,
and file transfer features, both you and your contact should have MSN Messenger
version 6.1. Go to http://messenger.msn.com/Download/ for the downloaded file.Furthermore, issues with firewalls or Network Address Translation (NAT) devices
are the most common reasons why some of the extended features of MSN Messenger
such as audio, video conferencing and file transfers do not work. Even if you
are not aware of a firewall or NAT on your computer, it is possible that your
contact is using one. If possible, try this with more than one contact to verify
the problem is not with just one contact. To help fix your issues, here are my suggestions:
– MSN Messenger’s video features do not support 256 color mode. To use this
feature, you should set your color quality to 16-bit. To do this:
1. Right-click anywhere on your desktop, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Settings tab.
3. Under Color quality, select Medium (16-bit) or a higher setting.
4. Click OK to save your changes.
5. Close down and restart MSN Messenger then try using the audio feature again.
– If you are using a third-party firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet
Security, Sygate, etc.), make sure that Messenger is to “Permit All”, “Allow All”, or in the case of ZoneAlarm, the “Medium” setting. Restart your computer afterwards to effect these changes.– If you are using a router, make sure that you have installed the latest
firmware for your hardware. Most of the routers are uPnP enabled but need a
firmware update. For more information on updating your device or software,
please refer to the documentation that came with your NAT.– If your audio/video device is plugged into a USB hub, try removing the hub and plugging the camera directly into the computer. If you are not using a USB hub, try unplugging some of the other devices using USB ports.
Note: Run the Audio and Video Tuning Wizard to be sure your camera, speakers, and microphone are working properly. To do so, click the Tools menu, and then click Audio/Video Tuning Wizard. You can also change your webcam settings to improve the video it displays. Click the Tools menu, and then click Web Camera Settings. Make the adjustments you want, and then click Close.
Thanks for all your help folks and I’ll keep you posted if anything untoward happens!.

MemberHi,
I managed to fix the problem by removing previously installed webcam software (you may need to use regedit [be careful!!!] to clear all of it).Cam seems to work properly most of the time, the rest of the time may just be due to running ME!
Still can’t get the webcam settings screen in MSN to show anything but grey though…..ho hum…

MemberI have ME running and have the same problem exactly. My cam is a Genius Video Web V2.

MemberThanks Roland,
I am using the latest drivers for the webcam, yes. I only use MSN Messenger 6 and can’t see why it won’t work with it.
I am running Windows Millenium Edition and do not seem to have an Audio/Video Tuning Wizard in MSN Messenger’s Tools menu – only an Audio wizard and the Webcam settings option in which the screen is greyed out.
I had a look in the MSN help files but didn’t find anything there. The thing is, when I have a webcam conversation, my contacts can see me fine, it’s just that I can’t see myself (blacked out) – if I click on the picture, as if to change the size for example it comes on briefly (so I know the signal is there) but then goes black again!!!
Any other thoughts?
