MemberAdding smileys to the menu is easy the problem is AOL will block them from showing up in the menu unless you meet one of two conditions. 1. The screen name is a registered AOL screen name not just an AIM screen name.
2. The AIM screen name subscribed to AOL’s AIM expression service http://expressions.aol.comBasically if you want them in the menu you got to pay AOL money.

MemberJeff you might want to change the link for
http://www.smileyspot.com/?p=download – provides tools for downloading smiley sets
I don’t provide any tools for downloading AIM smileys only offer a way to change the internal BMP emoticon images to another image. Already had one go around with the AOL attorney on that matter don’t want to have another one. However what you probaby can do is just use a generic smiley graphic with a description of the AIM smiley and when the user clicks on it a generic smiley graphic they get the XML font code to cut and paste into the IM window. Then you should not be breaking any laws of posting AOL images since, the images shown in the IM session are being sent from AOL servers and not you.

MemberAlso only AOL created expressions will show up on your buddies IM. If it was created by anyone else AOL’s servers will block the expression from showning up.

MemberRight now it looks like they are after the sites that made accessing the new Smileys easy to the end user. But, who is to say they won’t go after other web sites that have aim in the domain name or pictures (screen shots) from AOL products. What upsets me more than anything is sites like this and mine are designed to help improve the Instant Messaging experience and make using AIM enjoyable.

MemberGetting the SML code is easy, really don’t think it is a crack. All you need is a buddy from AOL 8.0 to send you an IM with one of the new Smileys and have a AIM add-on that allows you to log messages. Then open the log file in notepad and you will see the SML font code used by AIM/AOL to know which Smiley face to display. The graphic images themselves are stored in a directory named Bart Cache and then look for a directory named 1024, you will see files with a number code. Just add the extension .ZIP to it and open it with a zip program you will see all the 19×19 pixel gif images that are used to display in your IM.
What is sad is the web site I had, offered the Smiley Sets, which you could use right within AIM. You just had to have an AOL screen name or subscribe to AOL’s new AIM Expression service to use them. In either case AOL was getting money from the users that were using Smiley Sets.
On the statement the AIM is free service, it really isn’t it is AD-Ware, sure one can hack aim or add an add-on to remove the ads but in reality the product is still supported by advertisers. I really don’t think AOL would continue to offer it if they weren’t making some money on it and actually are probably making a profit from AIM.

Member“the unauthorized third party display, copy, distribution, or other uses of AOL’s Intellectual Propery is prohibited.”
That is a fairly broad statement. So some high paid AOL lawyer could say just providing the SML font code could be a violation.
If your lawyer says that it isn’t you could still provide the sml font code just don’t display any of the AOL/AIM images. But, still there isn’t anything to say AOL still won’t take someone to court just to drive them bankrupt.

MemberJeff they are shutting my site down not only due to the pictures of the AIM smileys but, also due to the word AIM in my domain name http://www.aimsmileys.com.
I will try and come up with a new web site but, as far as I’m concerned AOL can keep their smileys for their AOL users. It’s no wonder that MSN and Yahoo messengers are gaining a market share.
Tracer
MemberIt’s unusual for one’s account to be messed up like that for so long. I would say somehow it got glitched by their servers. I know you won’t like this but, your only option maybe to create a new screen name and add your buddies to the newly created name.
The only other thing I could suggest is try calling AOL’s 800 number and tell them your buddy lists won’t show up any more for your screen name leave out the part that your on AIM and not AOL, if they will let you get away with it.
Tracer
MemberHere is the page to report the problem to AOL.
Tracer
MemberThis is a problem with the AOL server. The buddy lists are stored on their servers, it usually goes away fairly soon. Your list hasn’t been lost just not available at this time.
