MemberI have been using buddy spy since the first version came out. I think it is great. However, I am having problems with the latest version. I scanned a buddy and it said online right away. I re scanned and it said offline, and then back to online. I tried using different scanning methods, and of course when I scanned again it went to offline. I decided to try my profile which was offline at the time. When using the invite packet, it says I am online. Peer to Peer gives me offline, and Status packet says i'm online again. I have been rescanning each time rather than clearing the name and retyping it. Also, while using the Status packet method, which shows me as online at one time will show me as offline with a re scan. Which scan method is the best to use which will be the least likely to give a false reading.

MemberHave been testing the latest version of buddy spy. My conclusion is that its much more prone to giving “false positives” that someone is online. I've tried using the different scanning methods so far “peer to peer” has the lowest incidents of false positives. I've also tried switching off the scan for webcams and chatrooms but this didnt seem to improve much. I've also tried switching to different yahoo servers but not much difference there either.
For now, I will likely stick with using an earlier version of buddy spy until some of the kinks get worked out. Which of the scanning methods do the early versions use? I do like the ergonomics/designs of the latest release. Hopefully you can get these last few bugs worked out. Cheers…

MemberThe first version used the invite packet, the second version uses the Peer To Peer method, and the third has those two plus the newest one.
Which if I can figure out some more of the packet segments will be a lot more accurate.December 1, 2004 at 3:31 am #106578aneagle
ParticipantUnsakred,
The invite packet may get a return or may not, it's not easy to set the optimal timeout and an unusual late return packet may be mistaken as a return for the next ID in the line. How about having an option to change this timeout?

Memberagrees that before this version buddy spy was a bit stable, and more successful in getting the result.
Here are a few things I have noticed when using the latest version
1) If you are loading up a list you will get more false positives for example if the first person on the list is online the next one on the list under will be online even though they are not ( have tried this on myself ) so it may be the timing needs to be changed
2) On the old buddy spy when it checked to see if the person was in chat and if they are then the bot would enter the room and then leave the room but on this new one it enters and then sits in the room and stays there ( a possible reason for when you try other ids for false negatives perhaps )
People have been asking about why does a profile state they are online yet buddy spy says they are not. There is a lot of glitches on the profile servers as of late. So its best to take profiles with a pinch of salt.. and be more reliant on buddy spy.
Another thing for the readers, you have to remember that chat rooms are generally allocated 40 people in a room so when you search someone the room may give you a false positive saying they aren't in chat when they are. The recommened thing to do is give it a try a minute later and the room may be free and allow your bot to slip into the room and confirm they are in there.
Sakred heres another thing On your buddy spy is it possible for when you load up a list to scan for it to remeber the last place it found the file instead of having to go thru folders to find it?
On the whole the new one does have a smoother feel.. Well done for getting this far Sakred.

Memberhello everyone, yes I agree this is great program and yes I have had simular problems where it says ppl are online when they are not. I have noticed someone say they are stiking with the old more reliable version until these problems are ironed out which im sure they soon will. all I would like to know is where may I be able 2 obtain a copy of the old versions?

Memberok,
I have been working some of the bugs and trying to work out the kinks for online detection.
Thusly, so far the Peer To Peer Packet seems to be the most reliable.
The invite packet will add the user online, until another packet is recieved stating the user is not available, and unfortunately the timing for that one stinks, since its controlled by the messenger servers.
The newest packet a.k.a ‘status' isnt a status packet at all, infact I believe it to be a Display Image packet.
When you start a conversation and you have the Send Display/Avatar enabled, it sends a request packet, which is the packet I am using.
The reason why it may not be correctly identifying the users, is do to different Messenger Versions. Since Display/Avatar are a relatively new feature for Messenger.
After sending this packet, you get a varied response back, I am still trying to break down this response, to have it give a more accurate reading.
So further development on that will be needed.
Ok, for the Room Issue.
Travelers is right, the room is always going to be allocated at 40, so if the room count is at 40, the bot cant join the room, and unfortunately, Yahoo! Doesn't respond with the Room Name, just simply an error code.
Now, previous versions of Buddy Spy left the Room afte Scanning it, this version does not, for reasons explained below.
Buddy Spy, uses the /goto ‘user' packet which only works when you are currently in a Room. So by default Buddy Spy, trys to join Buddy Spy:1
so the packet can be used for Room Scanning. Now it appears despite its ‘controversy' this program seems to be rather popular. And Buddy Spy:1 pretty much always is at 40, hence false positives when Room Scanning. It cant do a /goto since its not in a room.I am racking my brain as to find another way around it, but so far the best way to do it is just leave the bot in the room.
I am working on this a bit more before I release another version,
and for all you VB programmers, dont forget, this is an open source project. If you fix a bug, or add a new feature send me the source for and it will be incorporated into the next official release.
Thanks all

MemberI've removed a couple of posts in this thread, so if you're wondering why, read on. Because the last Buddy Spy Thread (see here) had so many off-topic and useless comments, I'm instigating a zero tolerance on this thread for off-topic posts. This includes such postings as: “Cool Program” or “Your website's forum isn't being answered fast enough”. This topic is soley about the program buddy spy and any technical questions you may have about it. If you like it, that's great, go add your opinion to our Buddy Spy Poll. If you have a problem with BuddySpy's website, you need to find the appropriate contact information from that site.
I hope I'm not coming off too hard here, but it just makes the thread much clearer and easier to read through when its consistently on-topic. If you have any problems or questions, I'm always available through email at shifter[at]bigblueball.com. Thanks for your co-operation 🙂

MemberHere's something I've been meaning to suggest just as a minor speed improvement. How about, if the packet comes back as “offline” why not just suspend the other two checks (cam, room). If they are offline, there is no need to check further. This should help with lists.. especially.

Just to speed things up a bit.

MemberCool..
Here's something I just noticed….
If you left-click on empty cells below the last user scanned, it wants to open an IM to that person.. even clicking anywhere in any empty cell below the last person….
How about making the IM option an “right-click” option…after all it is another option just like “rescan” or “check profile”… you can just add “”send IM”.Just a suggestion…. keep up the awesome work.
