MemberHi Wacky, this worked a treat for me, cheers!:)
Quote:quote:Originally posted by Wackyguy18I also had the problem of Installing MSN 6 because of 1603 error. I figured out that a pop up stopper program of mine was causing this.. If you have ad-aware 6 and have ad-watch activated, right click the icon in the taskbar and chose terminate, then install..
If this helped anyone please tell me, I want to know if this was actually causing it. Thanks!

MemberHi,
I had this same problem. I am using MSN Messenger 6 and Windows XP it would not upgrade to the latest version. I tried some of the solutions in this forum but they did not work. I found something that worked for me.
Disclaimer: I work as a software developer so for the less technical this might be a bit daunting..
This is what I did:
- Close MSN Messenger
- Download MSN Messenger 5.0 from http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msnm
- Rename C:Program FilesMSN Messenger to zzMSN Messenger (it wont be found but you can restore later if you need to)
- Open regedit (start > run > regedit) – Warning: be careful in there
- Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessenger
- Rename it to zzMSNMessenger
- Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMessengerService
- Rename it to zzMessengerService
- Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSNMessenger
- Rename it to zzMSNMessenger
- Install MSN Messenger 5.0 (if you can’t install you might have to use the “Windows installer clean up” tool described in this thread to remove the installation information for MSN Messenger 6 – I did this before I tried to install v5 but I am not sure if it is required)
- Run MSN Messenger 5 and check that it can logon
- Download MSN Messenger 6 from http://messenger.msn.com/Download/
- Install it and it should upgrade to v6
- Check that it can logon
If you can’t get it to work you can rename everything from zz back to the original names.
I found it helpful to turn on logging when installing the MSI packages. To do this you need to open the MSN Messenger Setup EXE with winzip and extract the contents into a folder. Then open a command window (start > run > cmd.exe) and go to the folder with the MSI packages then run %windir%system32msiexec.exe /i msnmsgs.msi /l*v msnmsgs.log You can then read the log file that is created to get more info.
Hope this helps 🙂

Here is how I managed to install 6.1. (On WinXP Pro)
1. Save the setup file SetupDL.exe from http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/
2. Right-click->Run As
3. Uncheck “Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity”
4. Click OK
5. Install.April 25, 2004 at 7:46 pm #57611echothehusky
Member1601 Fix – courtesy of naRc (see below)
This instruction is BS. It DOESN’T WORK!! It changes your directories and pulls many of the translator files from your Microsoft directories. Forget about importing information (all cutting and pasteing) into MS Word or Excell after you mess up your directories with this lame attempt at a fix…
I only hope my programs come back to original state after a reinstall of MS Office. btw.. this did NOT fix the install of MSN. What a waste of my time.

MemberI found that the renaming the temp folder in winsxs worked.
Now for those who are complaining about this :
3. Then Rename the file “x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_212f7d9e” to “x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_212f7d9e2”.
just look for files with the same setup they may have different numbers but look for files with….
x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp at the start and add a 2 at the end. I fopund 2 such files and renamed them with the 2 and suddenly volia the thing installed and ran correctly. 😀April 29, 2004 at 4:15 am #57612c0mplicat3d

ParticipantRe 1601/1603 problem when MSN messenger “asks” you to upgrade – after trying many fixes with NO sucess, variously trying to reinstal MSN (including 6.2 not yet official), and playing with the registry, I simply killed MSN Messenger (Add/Remove, AND deleting directory was necessary) and installed Windows Messenger.
My advice. Skip the torment, kill MSN Messenger and go to Windows Messenger.
