I figured out that a pop up stopper program of mine was causing this.. If you have ad-aware 6 and have ad-watch activated, right click the icon in the taskbar and chose terminate, then install..
If this helped anyone please tell me, I want to know if this was actually causing it. Thanks!
December 17, 2004 at 3:48 am #57649sk64Memberyou found it,
thank you SirDecember 19, 2004 at 7:54 pm #57656JohnCoxonMemberI’ve e-mailed MSN about this more times than I can count, and it’s not a solution but I figure it’s better here than as a seperate thread…
I get a 1603 error when I try to download 6.2 (or 7.0 Beta, come to that) over 6.1. And if I try to uninstall 6.1 using Control Panel it just loads up Windows Installer for a couple of seconds, closes it again then refreshed the Add/Remove Programs list. And scrolling down to MSN Messenger 6.1 tells me it didn’t uninstall.
Now MSN have told me to do x, y and z to fix this and none of the solutions offered have worked. I even deleted part of my registry on their instructions (and as a result my PC doesn’t even have a volume control on the bottom-right tray). I’m using Windows ME.
So can anybody help me out with this? Sorry if it doesn’t belong here, but I’m really really stuck…

Launch the MSN Messenger (6.2) installation program. When you get to the error message, don’t click OK. Go to your start menu and open Messenger. Now all you have to do is Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task on the isntallation software. This causes to not uninstall the files that were previously installed.
If you can’t open Messenger after you closed it, try this other solution. When you get to the error message, copy paste the folder C:Program FilesMSN Messenger to MSN Messenger2 . Close the installation software with Ctrl-Alt-Del and rename the folder to MSN Messenger. Then create your own shortcuts.
It didn’t work on my computer with Messenger 7.0 beta but you can try it.
I’ll be damned, Now I can install 6.2 without any problems, but still can’t install 7.0 beta. Tip: don’t install beta versions!!!

I fixed it by this way:
Start – System Tools -System Informations – Tools – Restore the System to before the uninstallation of the MSN Messenger.

I have windows xp,
someone please help me 🙁January 13, 2005 at 10:05 pm #57663masa_ashMemberHey,
I was previously having the 1603 error with MSN 7.0. The Error stated;
{E2DF0D9D-AB98-4BBF-AF55-B5B502DB932C}
HRESULT: -2147024894Here is how I fixed it. A program called wintools is possibly on your computer. This cannot be removed by simply deletion or Ad-Aware. You must manually go to Control Panel –> Add/Remove Program–> and Uninstall Wintools search bar. It will say you must be online to uninstall. Click Yes. I did this While in Safe mode, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work otherwise.
I hope this helps.
AshleyJanuary 15, 2005 at 5:20 am #57664professional jetlaggerMemberI had the same problem – I have been out of the country for 6 weeks and when I returned I tried to download messenger but could not complete the install due to an error – code 1603. I called a friend & he came over and figured it out. He installed and ran Lavasoft ad aware ( which found and removed no less than 650 popup/ad problems ), and he ran Spybot, then Norton antivirus. GUESS WHAT ??? IT WORKED. We then went on to install msn messenger swiftly, and without a problem.
This is definitely worth a try.January 19, 2005 at 12:43 am #57650oldfellaMemberI have been trying for couple of months to install MSN Messenger; have tried {b]all[/b] suggestions posted here, other boards, and even suggestions/instructions from the MSN Messenger (Microsoft) gurus themselves… they even brought in the big guns (bigger shots) but could not pin-point the problem nor the solution…. I gave-up in disgust! 😡
January 19, 2005 at 4:33 pm #57666mrheavydee95MemberThis is what I did and it fixt the problem. 🙂
Open the winsxs folder (Start, Run, winsxs).
Delete the folder named x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcDll_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.2.1_ or a file similar to this name.
Restart the installation; the problem should be solved.
Let me know if it works for you guys.January 19, 2005 at 5:54 pm #57665lil_danforthMemberI too had the problem of “could not find key”. I went into regedit through the run pompt. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMessengerServiceClients.
Right click on clients and select permissions, then allow full access and read for the user profile you are trying to install MSN Messenger under. The problem being that Your user did not have the allowance to install into the registrdy folder. -
