MemberIndeed….but having a forum to single people out for something good would be an idea. Like a hall of fame instead. People in the Yahoo! Forum like Freddy and Nhyrvana would certainly belong there. They are helpful and very technologically minded. Though, that does not mean that a person belongs there, the both of them ALSO explain things so that others can learn from them. Positive reinforcement…as the saying goes….one catches a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar…not that you are flies…YOU ROCK! (But I think you get my point…right???)

ParticipantExcellent Idea Orea. Damn i was thinking the glass was half empty while here you are sayin its half full. [:P] What better way to promote the proper use of the forum than with a Hall of Fame of sorts or perhaps a Member of the Month sorta thing. Then perhaps members would strive more for quality posts. A great way to spin things into a more positive light!

MemberOk, guys, enough with the chat, this is forum and most members decided that it would be a bad idea, now it’s up to Jeff. Wanna chat? Use the BigBlueBall Chatroom.

Wow! This has been one of the few forums that has actually stayed on topic, and has been pointing out excellent views. And besides who is it hurting if more people present there take on the suggestions? I’m sure Jeff won’t mind if out of the 4877 forum members that more than 6 members share there views on this. If no one else cares to add there views thats fine, but why you feel the need to stifle this Topic eludes me. There are no abusive or hurtful comments, sure a couple of useless posts, but that happens.
So if you do not wish to be apart of this discussion then don’t bother posting. If your goal is to take the fun out of these forums then I guess you are succeeding. I don’t wish to start an arguement, but I feel somewhat baffled by your post. I realize there may be a fine line between a forum and a chat, but in my opinion a forum is a general term for any online “bulletin board” where you can leave and expect to see responses to messages you have left, related to a topic. Now let me know if I am mistaken, but I do not believe we are violating any of Jeff’s guidelines or policies for posting.
Also, I have used the BigBlueBall Chatroom many times including right now, and only twice has anyone been in there to talk to. So your suggestion there is not very helpful and I also find it somewhat belittling and disrespectful.
Thats my view on it anyway.

MemberMy post was to stop any upcoming chats which was signaled by the post before mine, Freddy’s post which only contained a smiley. That is what usually starts happening. Don’t get me wrong.
June 11, 2003 at 9:58 pm #61650shifter
ParticipantAh i see, perhaps be a bit clearer next time on your definition of chat, and what you would like to be stopped. I think Freddy was only responding to Oreo’s praises of his helpfulness in the Yahoo Forums. Your intentions were good, but misunderstood.

MemberPosts with one words or smilies aren’t really tolerated, its basically an unwritten rule that everyone should know. Common BB etiquette.
June 12, 2003 at 12:11 am #61643shifter
ParticipantIs it common BB eitiquette to tell the forum users to stop “chatting” without explaination as to what the actual problem is?
Hey.. here is an idea suggested in this very Topic…why not send the violater a private message to let him know what he/she has done wrong?
As Freddy your violater said…Quote:quote:Otherwise what happens is a thread gets taken over with arguments about who is wrong, and poor Mr X who needed help unknowingly started an argumentI’m sure not every member knows of all of your “unwritten rules”. No need to be an asshole about it, just send him a quick email explaining the problem and avoid the unpleasantry of upsetting the forum and killing the topic.

KeymasterMagistyk, I’m going to disagree with you on this one. Besides, you’re not moderator for this forum… I am! If you think I’m not doing my job… take it up with me privately, please. And maybe you should consider switching to decaf. :p
Freddy, I understood your post as a ::blush:: for the compliment Oreo had made, and don’t see anything inappropriate about it. Don’t sweat it.
Carry on folks. Good dialogue here. I really like the idea of recognizing members who go the extra mile to be helpful… maybe as a Member of the Week?

MemberAm I the member of this week?
LOL J/KJune 12, 2003 at 1:32 am #61642shifter
ParticipantHEY! no self nominations allowed [:P]
Thanks Jeff, and I think a Member of the Week is a wicked idea. Perhaps starting a Nomination Forum for users to recommend those who are extra helpful? Not sure what the best way to determine the Member of the Week is. And should it be categorized into each IM Forum or just an overall Member of the Week?
June 12, 2003 at 2:11 am #61604Jeff Hester
Keymasterif there is a forum of shame… can we nominate people on it and have quotes of what they said becuase a hav a nomination…
o and about member of the week… i like the idea but how will it be judged?
June 12, 2003 at 2:17 am #61641shifter
ParticipantIf you had read the entries in this topic, you would have realized that the majority of us have decided against a forum of shame and instead prefer a Member of the Week to encourage users to write more sensible posts.
If you have a complaint against a user I would suggest emailing Jeff or the moderator of the particular Forum. Thanks.

I’ll take responsibility for that…I think I embarassed him (sorry Freddy!!!) 😉 So, what does everyone else think?? Should we have something like a member of the week or month?
