Just picking up on the private message statement, I notice there is no option for this? Maybe it would be a good addition?
Sorry about the smiley, just didn’t know how to acknowledge in words lol. Usually I don’t respond unless I have something intelligent (debatable) to add to the conversation.
Member of the Week sounds a good idea, but again it could have its problems. It’s obvious not every member likes every other member, and not every moderator likes every member! Publically making one user stand out to another could also have its consequences.
June 12, 2003 at 2:20 pm #61614detn8rParticipantEverything has its consequences, but thats life.
Your comment could lead to unwanted posts, as it could if Jeff accepts the idea of the member of the month, as hundreds of members shooting out info at one another trying to be the best.
A bad thing? Maybe… but it might clear up some of the crap posts people make, and make people feel good and respected for the knowledge they share.
Jeff, if you do accept the idea, hold a global poll at the top of the forum page, and see how the members react.
I honestly think its a great idea. And to comment on freddy’s comment on ‘private messaging’
Once long ago grasshopper, bigblueball had PM. Us old bigblueball-er veterans used it, and for some reason decided on not to keep it. Actually if I recall, rustedtight and Jeff leaded the disscusion on how we shouldnt have it.I was going to say a little comething last week on how we SHOULD have it back… well.. I guess I can say it now.
Not every member wishes to share their IM and email to the public for numerious reasons IE spam, and dumb questions.. IE “where can I find a good Yahoo booter”
Having PM is a quick way to tell members of things, and knowing that it went thru.
Or a simple way of saying thanks for something.
I think she should come back. 😉
What was the reason she left again? Because this site is about IM and not PM?
Please refresh my memory. (In a good way!:)June 12, 2003 at 4:43 pm #61626DJHyperbyteMemberMember of the week? This brings up one big concern for me.
Take a look at the profiles of LittleBuddy99 and lukezweb. Those two members have recently signed up and made an incredibly amount of posts. Some of these posts are what I would consider ‘mindless’ posts (“lol”, “ok”, “:D”, “yeah right”, etc). I think this is because of two reasons.
1) They like BigBlueBall and want to contribute to this site.
2) They want to get a higher post count/rank.I fear that a “Member of the week” competition (yes, it will become a competition) will encourage more members to post as much as they can, which will make reading (and moderating) this forum and unpleasant thing to do.
LittleBuddy99 and lukezweb: Please don’t get me wrong. I really don’t want to discourage you two from posting here. Just using you as an example. There have been many more ‘vanity-posters’ in the past. Do not feel offended.
June 12, 2003 at 5:12 pm #61640shifterMemberGood point DJHyperbyte, but I think as long as the Member of the Week is chosen based on the quality of posts they are making opposed to quantity, this should not be an issue. In fact I would hope that perhaps it might even discourage such vanity-posters from making such mindless posts.

Perhaps. Maybe the only way to find out is to try.
Still, would a board like this actually need a member of the week? And, wouldn’t a ‘Member of the week’ get boring after a few months?
June 12, 2003 at 6:48 pm #61639shifterMemberMaybe a Member of the Month would be a bit more realistic? I don’t think this board necessarily needs it (its already a great forum), but I think it would be a nice incentive for members and its worth a try. I was really just trying to think up a way to decrease the amount of mindless posts, and encourage more quality posts from members when I started this topic, so any other suggestions are certainly welcome.
June 12, 2003 at 10:43 pm #61636NhyrvanaMemberdetn8tr… the im on forums function is nice… BUT. what often happens is that active posters or even the admin get SWAMPED with people who will only pm the questions… *maybe thats why it was killed b4? * *looks at jeff….. pokes….. why did you’ll remove it?
but im off topic……so on topic…..Maybe not even something regarding posting or ANYTHING having to do with BBB…. other than being an active member? folks can just be profiled? a “meet the member” kinda thing? more indepth than profile…. * ya know.. just more info…. people can brag on them selves.. sites they like….. or whatever……or post 10 things you dont know….. ?
might be a way to drag some of the quieter posters.. *LURKERS* out and show them off! that gets rid of the vanity posting. etc….. post count bumpers… when mods or admins see an insiteful post. or just get intrigued . or draw a name outta the hat…..they can email and say…. would you like to be a member of the week…. if so. return this. you have x amount of space? one page something like that?
make sense?
just my 2 cents…..June 12, 2003 at 11:56 pm #61623FaizanMemberIsn’t member of the week for the members who are doing well?
I dunno why I get confused with this topic a lot!:)
June 13, 2003 at 12:08 am #61620mariettelarkinMemberThis is so weird, right before I read Nhyrvana’s post, I thought why not highlight a different member and maybe show a photo and what they in real life, etc. I think that would be nice to see the people you are talking with on this forum. I know that I have met some really really nice people through here! What do you think?
June 13, 2003 at 12:42 am #61630OreoMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by shifterMaybe a Member of the Month would be a bit more realistic? .
Or maybe if someone or someones are doing a good job…just highlight them….nothing like each month…but just a sort of cyber pat on the back, that MIGHT cut down on the competition…nothing is perfect…but I really think that certain people on this site REALLY deserve a little recognition for what they are doing. ( I won’t name any names…I’ve said my piece already.)
As far as photos go…. I might scare away some villagers if mine went up! And I think that some people may not want to be that recognized…..but other than that…I think it’s a grand idea…it might be fun!June 13, 2003 at 3:58 am #61606Jeff HesterKeymasteryes but if there is a member of the month or week how will they be chosen?

Hmmm… like a member spot light?
that soulds nifty-o, tho it would be hard to choose for those, seeing as we have somewhere in the 4000 member range. As for choosing members for the member of the week… I’m thinking that moderators, or even members might email Jeff, or send him a message via IM on a name, and a reason. (Yikes… that might be a little to0 much)
Hey… why not combine both ideas?
Share why they are the member of the month.. and then share information about them, and a optional picture?June 13, 2003 at 4:56 am #61634OreoMemberDet…that sounds like a great idea…I mean, I think if a majority of people, the mods and Jeff agree about someone..that should be the person…. along the same line… we don’t want to make it too hard on the mods and Jeff…maybe we should have a member from each IM forum be the member of “six months” or just have the spotlight on him or her for being helpful and not make things too complicated with “of the week” or “of the month” or even “of the six months” Maybe if we nominate some people and then have one person one vote posting….if there is a way to make sure each of us on vote once…and just do it that way and then the mods and Jeff can weigh in with their votes…. which of course could count for more…this does not have to be a complete democracy…(Geez…can you tell I teach History?) What do the rest of you think?
June 25, 2003 at 3:06 pm #61656LittleBuddy99Memberi guess that would work. But then the same people might be getting it every week/month. It would get kinda boring.
I have a bad idea but ill share anyways. What if there was a member of the month for Newbies-Rookie and Veteran-Elite
July 7, 2003 at 7:14 am #61651coolguyj2Memberwell I think This IDEA IS GR8!!! this would avoid posting of unwanted comments and also as each member will try to acheive MEMBER OF THE MONTH award, so he/ she will try their level best to post info which is as gud as possible and will try to help!!!! So every1 what do u think!!! I think this should be implemented!!! but the prob may be the coding!!! Atleast I am not gud at it!!! any volunteers???
