Back in May, 2003 we exclusively revealed MSN Messenger 6.0. This time around it’s 6.0’s bigger brother, 7.0. MSN Messenger is clearly progressing in this early look at 7.0. You now have the ability to sign in as busy/away/offline etc which will please a lot of people. 3 Degrees is finally encorporated into MSN Messenger (something I had been writing about for more than a year). The interface is cleaner, smarter and the features are great!
Winks: Winks allow you to send kisses, hearts and all sorts of silly cartoons to your contacts.
Nudge: Nudge allows you to send a “shake” to your contact. Both your own and your contacts MSN Messenger window will shake, much like how Internet Explorer windows shake using the correct javascript.
Download packs: Download packs will allow users to grab winks/emoticons/display pictures and backgrounds straight from MSN. As these currently don’t work we were unable to test them.
Games: Chess Club, Bankshot Billiards Club are included if you’re a Instant Games Clubhouse member. Standard Checkers/Solitaire Showdown/Bejeweled/Minesweeper Flags and Tic Tac Toe are still included.
Activities: Activities allow you to share files, calendars, photos and perform tasks such as remote assistance.
Deluxe Display Pictures: Although these are unavailable it seems like MSN are going to supply animated display pictures.
The build in question is 7.0.0205 and carries the beta tag throughout. The main MSN Messenger window is redesigned to show your display picture and includes the ability to scroll through tabs. There’s no new options in the main options menu but you can change the position of the tab icons. When a contact signs in using MSN Messenger 6 or above you get the contacts display picture on the sign in toast. Custom emoticons are still the same, they still do not animate or allow animated GIFs etc. Check out the screenshots below for more features and the general user interface. MSN Messenger 7.0 is expected to be released into beta on November 11 with a general “MSN Messenger Wave 10” release as late as February 2005. We’ll keep you updated but for now enjoy the screenshots.

September 29, 2004 at 11:32 pm #71064Jeff HesterKeymasterI think that we’ll see more than just winks brought over from threedegrees. One of the cool features of threedegrees is the ability to create and share a music playlist in real-time. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those P2P music capabilities snuck into MSN Messenger 7 before it goes live.

Uh, the Administrator just asked for a link three posts ahead of yours. What do you think the answer is?

Neowin is associated with Microsoft. I honestly find it funny that they are offering to ban members posting a link to download it, but allowing their members to post like it’s a spam pit of hell. But oh well.
I just think creamhackered wants the braging rights of posting a beta download link before others do =)September 30, 2004 at 8:40 am #71103DeadeyeMemberFebruary is a long time from now, does anyone know when the beta version will be released?

Sorry, didnt notice that in my excitement. 😡September 30, 2004 at 9:01 am #71082PhilMemberQuote:quote:MSN Messenger 7.0 is expected to be released into beta on November 11It’s right there in the topic!
October 1, 2004 at 1:08 am #71065FanaticMemberOnce the beta gets out, there’s no putting the genie back in the lamp. It will be available SOMEWHERE if you’re determined to find it. Remember what happened with the MSN 5 beta last year? Some sites had it linked, and then Microsoft contacted them and “asked” them to take the links down? But MS didn’t contact ALL sites — some still had it — and some will again.
But really, who gives a rip? From the initial screen caps (which Neowin took down at MS’s request) it doesn’t look like such a big deal. I mean, whoooooo I get to see MY OWN display pic in the contact list. Big deal! It doesn’t really seem like it should be a major release, but more like a 6.x upgrade with minor enhancements.
What I’m more interested in is whether the MSN protocol will change (again) and break Trillian/GAIM/Jabber/et.al. (again).
October 1, 2004 at 1:55 am #71068detn8rParticipantExtremely good points, Fanatic.
Most of the things that were incorporated into this build were things that many, many people requested in online chat sessions by Microsoft.
Things such as the yahoo rip of “buzz”, and sign in under “offline” were heavy things that were asked for. Others like Nudge, or winks or whatever all came over from Three Degrees (as MSN have taken a hell of a long time to throw that into Messenger). Others like the download packs is just things to shut people up from complaining as far as I’m concerned. As long as it has those god damn animated display pictures, the whole version 7 things will be worth it I guess. I also wouldn’t be surprised considering that MS bitched at Neowin for the screenshots that it does become 6.3, rather than 7.
As for the protocol… after v10, I can’t see them jumping the gun again, but that’s my opinion.
October 1, 2004 at 8:12 pm #71086shifterMemberUpdate from Neowin:
Quote:quote:According to Microsoft-watch.com and reliable sources, MSN are planning to release Messenger 7 into beta testing on BetaPlace as early as next Tuesday. We exclusively revealed the new client yesterday amongst a lot of hype and anticipation. MSN were due to encorporate some added features into MSN Messenger 7 but it seems like these are delayed until a later “wave”. For those wondering, a “wave” is a release (be it .1 or major).MSN Spaces integration: Blogging straight from MSN Messenger Window
Personal Information Management: Intergration with MSN Explorer to truely manage your contacts and build lots of information about them.
Since MSN Messenger 7 is now due to beta next week, the public preview will follow in November and an earlier final release is now expected.
The latest build is 207 and we’ll keep you updated as always
Blogging straight from Messenger, now that is an interesting concept!
October 2, 2004 at 2:01 am #71066FanaticMemberAOL already has blogging from their AOL Instant Messenger (the subscriber-only version). It hasn’t been a huge success, but that’s probably because they wall it off for only their paying customers.
I wonder how many chat conversations will now be showing up in blogs?
The PIM stuff isn’t very sexy. There are already a million ways to handle contacts, calendars and to-do lists, and having it managed through my IM doesn’t seem to add much value. I like the ability to integrate, though, and get notices via IM (meeting reminders, etc.)… but again, all of this has been available for a long time already.
I do some beta-testing via Beta Place for other MS products; I’ll check there next week and see if they throw the MSN Messenger 7 beta my way. 😉
October 2, 2004 at 9:22 pm #71069detn8rParticipantSome bugs I have encountered:
I recieve the following when trying to close a conversation window with someone that is on my contact list. Anyone who is not, I don’t recieve the error. *shrugs sholders*
This one is interesting… they seem to have forgotten to put in the crying emoticon in the list:
And the animated gif fanatics may be interested in this:
Have fun 😀
October 3, 2004 at 12:37 am #71060Jeff HesterKeymasterHmm I was thinking of trying it out but it could be very annoying that every time you close a message box that error message pops up. Animated gifs is not something I’m looking forward to but the sign in as any status may be pretty cool. I guess I’ll wait til the real thing is out.
