KeymasterMost of the time when people tell you they know your IP address, you never know whether it’s just a prankster or someone who actually would like to cause harm to your computer. In most cases, it’s best to just ignore them.
People who harrass people feed off of your responses. They get their kicks by seeing you react to what they’re doing, so if you ignore them, sometimes they’ll just give up and go away after awhile.
I’ve tested my computer and found out that it’s fairly secure, but I don’t have a proxy server to hide my IP address yet. I’m going to get one in the near future. I have a really good firewall that totally blocks my ports from being seen, but I know that it does not hide my IP address from anyone who might want to get it.
I’ve also heard that with dial-up your IP changes everytime you use it. How do you program your cable modem to change your IP periodically?
I think another good idea is to limit the amount of personal information you include in your profiles and on your home page and other web sites. I’ve recently removed my last name from all my web pages including the keywords and description meta tags in my code.
I never display my email address or zip code on anything public either.
Now, photos are something else altogether. I always like to put a face with a name of someone I’m chatting with, and I have photos included in my profile and briefcase. It’s not an issue for me, but there’s always the possibility that someone could steal your pics and alter them into something you may not like.
By trojan scanner, do you mean something similar to a spyware scanner?
So I need to call my ISP and ask them if I can get a new IP?

MemberOk with the worry about IP tracing. If you have Ytunnel there is an option to hide ur IP number. you can get ytunnel fron the Ytunnel site. Only problem is that Ytunnel the new generation of Boot programs that dissconnect you from the yahoo servers never getting as far as your ytunnel or messenger.:O
{EDIT: Reference to obtaining illegal copies of Ytunnel removed – Please don’t encourage piracy here}August 5, 2003 at 1:15 am #59680AK26
Participantwell..my friend got booted from yahoo games for 7 months just for using ytunnel & just 2 days before he got unbanned…
about getting Ip there some programs & some websites for it..like WhereIsIP, IP Grabber or if u r moderator or administrator on any forum they get to see all our IP’s (unless we use IP Hider, they cant see us)

MemberIf a person knows your e-mail he or she can do a simple search that will reveal your IP. Yahoo even tells you they have your IP if you post on a message board. Unless you have a firewall and are aware of it… You would be suprised how many times your puter gets pinged while you are in a public chat.

MemberYTunnel will not hide an IP. There are many ways around the flawed implementation Ytunnel uses. All YTunnel is good for is filtering out the bots in chat rooms, the super iggy, and some other small nice features.
ZoneAlarm, McAfee Firewall, BlackIce Defender, etc…all SOFTWARE based firewalls, are not worth a dime. They will do very little to protect your computer, it’s really a marketing ploy. A hardware based firewall is the best method. Many of the routers sold today by companies such as Linksys and iLink include these. You could also setup a seperate computer on a free OS like Linux and do it that way, but that’s not a job for an average user. Run the hardware firewall AND Zonealarm together if you’re really paranoid, or switch from a Windows platform to a more secure one. And yes, there are other platforms out there with usability, Mac for instance.
Most of the problems with the people termed “hackers” is a disgust of Microsoft, and anyone who uses their products. Not to mention Microsoft’s inability to create a secure product is also a major problem fueling them.

MemberContrary to many people’s beliefs, it is very difficult, almost impossible to completely mask/hide your ip while connected to the internet. As Freddy stated earlier in this post, a computer cannot communicate on the Internet without knowing the destination computer’s IP address and the destination computer has to have the IP address of your computer. This goes for any computer communicating via the TCP/IP protocol.
If you want to find out more information about what an IP address is or what can be done with an IP address I would suggest doing a search, which would bring up lots of information.
Here is a few sites that I brought up on the subject:
this site will show you your ip address, or the address that others will see (if you are going through a remote proxy)
http://www.whatismyip.com/For those somewhat technically savy here is a more technical explanation of TCP/IP addressing and networking.
http://compnetworking.about.com/library/weekly/aa042400a.htmfor those not so technically savvy here is a page with an explanation in layman’s terms.

MemberSimilar question to Metal Gurl’s, but different reason. My girlfriend’s psycho ex-boyfriend, who split the state to avoid arrest warrents and child support, has been harrassing us using messenger. As soon as we ignore him he pops up under a new ID. An annoyance, but no more. Recently it has changed. On Monday he IM’d me saying he was back in town and was going to kill me, which also indirectly put’s my girlfriend and our 2 children, aged 5 months and 16 months (his by sperm donation) at risk. I don’t want to hack anyone, but I do want to find out where he’s sending the IM’s from, so I know if we are at risk. How can I accomplish this?
By the way, if you want to know what kind of guy he really is, take a look at the web page he made about his very own daughter, [EDITED by Administrator], who he abandoned when she was 2 1/2 months old.
Thanks for your help.

Participantmdg43 – All of your questions/concerns can be answered from our Yahoo! FAQ
Quote:quote:How can I get my contacts IP address, and what can I do with it?
Not a great question to post in the Forum, due to the obvious fact that it implies you want to hack someones account. A few things you can take into account:1. If you are using webcam, IM with a buddy, IMVironments or file transfers, you can start a dos prompt (NT/2000/XP: Start>Run>cmd | 9x/ME: Start>Run>command.com) Type netstat at the prompt.
2. An IP address is not something hard to obtain, and will not get you anywhere. In fact the majority of users have dynamic IP’s that change from day to day.
3. If you believe you are being cyberstalked or harrassed in chat/messenger you need to do one or all of the following – report the offender to abuse@yahoo.com ; contact the local authorities; and visit http://www.wiredpatrol.org for more information and help.

If you do manage to obtain an IP, you can run an IP WHOIS at a site such as http://www.samspade.org which will give you the address of his internet service provider (ISP). This will then allow you to send complaints directly to the ISP’s listed Abuse Department.
You can also fill out the Geocities Feedback Form (http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/geo/cgi_abuse) to request the removal of the slanderous site, if you have not done so yet.

MemberHey, I met this guy and we’ve been talking for a while and now we consider ourselves “dating.” Lately I’ve been doubting it and I kinda have a feeling it’s my friend playing some sick joke. I really do like him and now I’m kinda worrying. Could you help me get his IP address and figure out if he’s real?

MemberHow is find out his ip going to tell you if hes real or not ? If you think your the but of someones joke or its a freind of yours simply playing a joke look at the way they say things you can change your type set but not how you talk well not for any length of time your habits shine thru. have you and this guy had a voice chat talked on the phone ? his ip address would just tell you what Isp he is using unless hes using a web proxy . If you have doubt confront him, sneaking around is no way to base a relationship .
Just a hint but look at the email header you might find what your looking for .February 21, 2004 at 12:01 pm #59714venetiescrub
