MemberJust means that Trillian does not fully support HTML script right now, and the code is for colored text, if used improperly it could actually boot someone off of Yahoo messenger.

MemberMy questions to God: (yes I said QUESTIONS, PLURAL)
1. Why is it that the most ignorant of morons have degrees?
2. Why do women insist on complaining about us guys leaving the toilet seat up when they know their complaints fall upon deaf ears (most of the time)?
3. Why on earth would you allow Enron to name a baseball stadium?
4. Why do Texans make the worst drivers (next to Okies, of course)?
5. Why am I permitted to make such a rediculous rebuttle?Okay that is all.

Why wont “Alternative IM Apps.” do the service? like the last question regarding IRC was like ummm, OK so it will be the first.
IRCee’s are kinda thin on the ground around here.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
rhiannonWhy won’t it work?, probably because I am NOT the moderator of THAT forum 😀

MemberWell dang it Ryan,
Now I have to give you the only black mark against your product.
I perfer the TOC protocol verses OSCAR (more reliable against, AOL’s monopoly like practices)Other than that AWESOME job, keep up the good work.

MemberJoe,
Just a FYI:
If you trace the IP address and find it belonging to AOL (yes some people still think they are #1, why? I have no idea) you are better off not persuing her any further through law enforcement since that IP address is shared with over 30 million other people.
If you attempt to email AOL with your complaint, the chances of you getting a live body to give $.02 cents about your complaint are two, slim and none (slim just packed up and left town). The majority of the complaints received by AOL staff are filed in a special file called ‘file 13’ aka the almighty recycle bin.
Take it from someone who knows first hand.

MemberYes I use my filter1.txt file to filter out words like:
America Online, AOL, Time Warner, Steve Case, Bob Pitman, HBO, Cinemax, New Line Cinema, Netscape, MapQuest… you get the idea! 😉
Just a little disgruntled ex employee humor… Hope no one minds!

MemberI can not and will not comment on the lack of interoperability between AOL/AIM and ICQ, however I will disprove many peoples misconceptions of AOL unwilling to open their network up for 3rd party applications.
In 1998, AOL developed their AOL Instant Messenger to utilize a network they dubbed ‘TOC’. ‘TOC’ only supports the basic functionality that most IM services today use as standards:
Basic two way chat
Add a user to a buddy list
Block a user from a said individualLater on in 2000/2001 AOL begin using a new network they called ‘OSCAR’, ‘OSCAR’ has capabilities that are not provided within the ‘TOC’ network:
File Transfers – (A REAL BIG SECURITY NO NO with IM clients, in my personal and professional opinion)
Avatar Display – Oh major feature there!
Graphical display of emoticons – WHOA! I remember when we had to use pure ASCII to display emotions, no loss of functionality there.
yada yada yada…
AOL has opened up the TOC network as it had promised back in 2000, to do it’s part to be fully interoperable with 3rd party clients, however the developers have taken the liberty of being somewhat greedy and try to force AOL to open up their proprietary network of ‘OSCAR’ up for them the use.
I hope this lesson of AOL AIM network techologies was informative yet enlightning.
If it wasn’t I’ll be sure to set the clock alarm for you so that you can wake up in time for work tommorow 😉

MemberHere is an alternative IM client that works with AIM,Yahoo and MSN and that is Easy Message which can be found at http://www.easymessage.net
Just some observations before you take a look at the client:
1. Its very apparent that the developer of this software, downloaded MSN Messenger, reversed engineered it and redesigned it to make it his own. You can easily tell this by the type of sounds he has associated with the client and the graphical smilies are the same as the ones used with MSN, don’t know if there is some legality issues involved there but…
2. For AIM I can tell it’s utilitizing the NOC AIM protocol, because its not bugging me to view someone’s idioitic avatar (no offense Jeff since I know avatars are used here), this is very cool because the NOC protocol, is open for anyone to use unlike OSCAR which other clients like Trillian have been trying to use.
3. The software is still buggy, you will encounter the BSOD at least once. I have been reassured that the next client that this individual releases, will address those issues.
4. Its small, which means less resources are needed to run the application, another plus in my book (maybe because my computer is a dinosaur).
Well there it is, if you would like to check it out after knowing ahead of time what the client is all about, I encourage you to do so it looks very promising.

MemberI used to work for America Online as part of their tech support team. I used IM’s all the time, for people that general questions about AOL service, they would often IM me with their questions and or concerns and I would address them via IM or often times EMail.
Of course, the down side was anytime I logged on, I would be bombarded with 100 + IM’s from disgruntled members, and I could never get a moment’s peace online.
As far as the security issues are concern, there is one that is never talked about and that is lack of anonomity. If a malicious person wanted to track you down all they would have to do is send you an instant message, wait for your response, drop to DOS type netstat -a and obtain you IP address.
Of course this should be address in another thread, I am sure and I apologize ahead of time for bringing this point up here. It is probably going off the beated path but I felt that it had some relevancy to the post at hand, to a certain degree.

MemberSomeone wanted to know something ‘neat’ about Trillian, being as though I am on the security nut of the bunch I will list some things I find very ‘neat’ about Trillian:
1) HTML and JAVA SCRIPT codes used succession does not ‘boot’ you off line, like it does with some IM clients (most noticible in AIM and Yahoo!).
2) Your character buffer is larger than that of most commercial IM clients.
3) Multiple logins per medium is nice
4) Does not prohibit you to send multiple succession has most IM clients do to prohibit ‘flooding’.
5) You set your away messages for all mediums with a few clicks, and its done all at the same time.
6) You can ‘dock’ Trillian to right side of your screen.
I am too tired to rattle anymore, right now maybe later

MemberI am with Phil, I am going to wait for the gold release myself.
Being an ex AOLTimeWarner Inc employee (prior to the merger) we knew that no one in Virgina could code anything to save their lives, and it always took someone from the west coast to fix what it was VA screwed up.Another reason I am waiting for the gold release, is so that w00w00.org can pick it a part (they never do this to alpha or beta projects) and discover more buffer overflow security concerns.
They had a field day with AIM 4.x, will they have the same kind of picnic with 5.x? We shall soon see!
