MemberPlease disregard… I have just found they incorporated it in MSN Messenger itself now… idiot…

MemberDude, you don’t know them, they’re bona-fide nerds, browser wars to them is like religious crusades. When is IE 7 supposed to go out of beta? Hopefully, that will be nicely patched up (mindless optimism, I know).
In the meantime, I might try MiamyGuy’s suggestion. Cheers, mate.
Mr V
MemberI thought as much… but I was hoping that for once, Microsoft might show an open mind for users and maybe allow this option since so many people use Firefox as a browser but Messenger as IM.
At home, I still use IE, but due to these recent IE security holes which still aren’t patched, admin guys at work are frowning in a very annoying fashion whenever we use IE rather than Firefox.

MemberI can’t seem to upload the image directly to the post?
Anyway, I discovered a new thing actually – at the sign-in window, if I change the email address that I’m signing into to an address that I’ve never signed before – the status and the button appear! But as soon as I type in my main email address, the dropdown disappears?
All three optins are ticked – remember me, remember my password and sign me in automatically.

MemberHah! I think I’m close… just found something…
Back at work, I took a screenshot of
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessengerPerPassportSettingssomenumberfolderI was looking at differences between those registry keys, and keys I’ve got here at home. There was a Dword, DefaultSignInState, and here it was set to 0x00000006 (6). On the screenshot of settings from work, it was 0x00000022 (34). I change it here to 34, and re-start the messenger. I can see the dropdown now with Status: Away as default value! However, if I click on it and change it to Appear Offline, the dropdown disappears, only the field title, Status, remains. But I can’t click to the right of it, on the dropdown value list where I changed it just a second ago. Still, I sign in, and I am signed in “Appear Offline”.
I refresh the registry, and the value is back to 6 again! Exit Messenger, re-start it to login screen and not even the title “Status” or the dropdown list appear at all! Obiously, value (6) means “Appear offline”, and value (34) means “Away”, which is fine, but why does it disappear???
I think I will just copy all the registry values from work PC to home PC tomorrow and see if that will work.

MemberCountless times 🙂 With the same installation file that I installed on the PC that it has the status, of course.
Mr V
MemberOh, right, I assumed, no official support. I thought that it’s all right if I ask someone here for advice. Sorry mate 🙂
No matter. I already re-installed 816, I guess I can wait for proper version.
Mr V
MemberI’ve just downloaded 7.5.0162, but for some reason I can’t sign in.
I get the error 80048820. When I click ‘Troubleshoot’, I get a tick to the IP test result, but fails straight on the next one (Default gateway). “Your gateway appears to be offline”. What gateway? I am not behind a router, I have a ADSL modem pluged right into the PC.
It says my firewall could be the case, but my firewall usually always asks me when a new version attempts connection, and it didn’t now. Just to be on the safe side, I’ve switched the firewall off, and same thing. Internet connection is, obviously, working OK.
Any ideas?

MemberBasically, I find the whole concept utterly useless. If I want to change my name, I can do so in – name field. If I am away or busy, I just put such a status on, and through a MSG Plus, define my own status.
Lastly, if I DID have a need for this – hell, it’s only in the Tools-Options. I don’t need another damn button for something I never use.
I admit, I am a bit of a purist. I don’t want it there. As Detn8r said, why have it there when it just bulks up space? I removed EVERYTHING from Messenger main window, apart from Display Picture, MSN logo and E-mail button. That’s the way I like it. Even from messaging window, I got rid of “Handwriting”, “Font”, “Packs”, hell, I even got rid of “SEND” button. When do you actually CLICK on send? Never. You always hit ENTER key, right?
Messenger is my favourite messaging software, but all this crap that comes with it, “MSN today”, “Search”, tabs, is just plain annoying. So these patches people write are a godsend. Without them, I might forget messenger and go back to ICQ2003 (the one you can kill ad banners on).
Mr V
MemberSorry for any confusion, it’s just that these two things were right next to each other. There was a box for switching on/off the “What I’m listening to” feature, and as if a part of it, next to it some textbox “Type a personal message to your contacts”. I’m still mystified what was the other one for.
No matter. It’s gone. Dead. Finito. Ceased to be. Ex-feature 🙂
Mr V
MemberYou know the little space where you could “Type in a message to your contacts”, just in front of dropdown where you could switch on/off the “Turn on what I’m listening to”.
It was a transparent textbox just below your name and status at the top of the messenger. I don’t think that the Messpatch had an option to remove that as well but this patch that I’ve mentioned, has.
Cheers
Mr V
MemberI’ve found it.
If anyone is interested, there is another patch written by Ahmed, you can find it on
It has about 30 regular “remove & patch” features. Like it.
