MemberApparently users can connect from behind a firewall on AIM 5.5 now, I haven’t had the chance to test it. AIM help says:
Incoming, outgoing, and AOL proxy server
Most users, including those behind corporate firewalls, should use this setting. This indicates that if a File Transfer or Direct IM proposal is accepted by you or your buddy, you are allowing your buddy’s computer to try to connect to yours.

This setting can be found at
Edit Prefrences (F3)>Direct IM>FirewallIf that doesn’t work, I don’t know enough to configure the router, sorry 🙁
rascat
MemberI can still do it on AIM 5.5.3572.
rascat
MemberIt would really help to know what kind of firewall you had. Are you using a router? Most of those have built in firewalls that require you to reconfigure them and open up some ports. If you have a software firewall, then you simply need to find it and it should have instructions on how to turn it off. Look for something like norton, zonealarm or mcafee. As far as I know there is no way to “trick” AIM or the firewall.

MemberIf you check out the thread, both WhiteMateria and David give a list of unnecessary and optional files along with how to remove them. Schizna69 has posted a link to download AIM lite (haven’t done it, so I can’t tell you if it works). I also reccomend you check out the sticky note “skimming AIM 5.5”. If nothing else, I reccomend you download a new Aimres.dll and uninstall Wild Tangent.

MemberWhen you say original screen, i’m guessing you mean the sign-on screen. It sounds to me like some sort of time out. have you tried other versions or reinstalling?
rascat
MemberOn AIM you can only use the smileys that they have, the other person won’t see anything else.

Memberthis happens to me too. I’m convinced it is a memory problem as it has happened with both 5.2 and 5.5. Some things to avoid:
Running too many programs at once
Sending/recieving large messages
Performing too many AIM functions at once (ex. talking to five people, downloading a picture, and checking a profile)if you believe it has slowed down/stopped check someones profile and if it says “please wait…” shut down AIM and log back on. this should fix the problem and you shouldn’t miss too many messages. however, if you don’t decrease your memory consumption it will just happen again and again. if it is really bad, consider restarting your computer.
rascat
Memberif they won’t tell you who they are talking to, why would they add it in their profile? there’s no way to do it besides asking without and violating their privacy.

MemberIn response to Hotmop, while photos and videos are alterable, even the best editing can be spotted by professionals. As far as logging, the law serves not only to make the evidence impermissable in court it also stops you from using the conversation against anyone. For instance, if I tell you something in confidence or otherwise that is potentially damaging or even just embarassing and you show it to someone else, that is now a felony because the conversation was not supposed to be logged. The law is seemingly ridiculous, but in the face of everyone complaining about the recent patriot act this law serves both to restrict government actions and protect the privacy of citizens. I think it would be wise to write the law in a clearer more sensible manner yes, but the FBI is not going to come to your house for logging a conversation. If you really want to log legally, add something in your buddy icon that says all conversations are logged. If you tell them that, than any continuance of the conversation is consent to the recording.

Membersomeguy03, I would think alana0601 is correct. As you said, the other persons computer doesn’t ever register that you were kicked off. Therefore, Aim would not have picked up on it either. Also, if that were the case then there would have been a log that they signed off imediately before signing back on. Where as I am almost always away while invisble, and always come back from invisible while away, and shortly afterwards disable my message. That is more likely to be the case. But to answer the original question, yes it is possible.
rascat
MemberWhat version are you using? In the past on 5.2 I have been able to kick myself off at other locations by signing on using AIM express.
rascat
MemberI haven’t used it, but the program listed on skimming 5.5https://bigblueball.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9157 claims to remove everything you don’t need.
rascat
Memberif they don’t have it installed they won’t see it, otherwise they should. try a search in google to find it.

MemberOn AIM 5.5 users who pay for expressions and most likely people on AOL can send sounds to you. you can choose not to accept them, but you will have to go to a few places. i’m assuming your on 5.5, I can’t help you with other versions. go to My AIM>Edit Options>Edit Prefrences>IM/Chat then choose sounds under IM Window. The top selection you will be able to choose from accepting sounds, having no sounds, or having your own sounds. Then you will have to go to >AIM Expressions and make the same choice under incoming sound and outgoing sound. I now that wasn’t very clear, if you have trouble i’ll try to clarify later.

MemberWhen you updated, did you uninstall the old version first (if not it might have left some of the old files rather than writing over them)? could it be a memory problem?
