I get the feeling that someone wants to make security issues known to everyone so we can all know how to protect ourselves from exploits.

MemberI hope this thread is NOT DELETED. This guy also posted on our forums at http://www.icq-4u.com.
I think it’s important for the ICQ community to see the spamming software, to download it, to examine how it works, to understand how it finds and targets UINs. That’s the best way we can establish counter-measures.

MemberI don’t know, have you tried?
Shmanky
MemberYeah…
delete your ICQ2003b folder
copy your old ICQ2003a folder into ICQ2003a
Run the database converted in ICQ, called dbconvert.exe or something similar.You can’t “integrated” the 2003a history with existing 2003b history. If you want your 2003a history, you will have to lose your existing 2003b history.

Oh yeah; that’s a consequence of removing the ad in the contact list. If you notice, the Xtraz button was originally across from the ad, but when the ad is removed, the Xtraz button is moved down to the contact list.

Sorry, I can’t really imagine what you’re saying. Can you put up a screenshot?

Really? Well I’m not sure why you are unable to save a line to your HOSTS file; seems pretty straight forward. This is what my file looks like:
Quote:quote:Code:# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host127.0.0.1 localhost
80.190.244.8 cb.icq.comThis file is located at different places on different operating system:
Windows 95/98/Me c:windowshostsWindows NT/2000 Pro c:winntsystem32driversetchosts
Windows XP c:windowssystem32driversetchosts

At http://www.icq-4u.com we’ve got a simple manual banner removal solution for ICQ Lite 4.0 beta (#1613). Unlike previous banner removals, this one also removes the ad at the top of the contact list!
The solution is thanks to an anonymous post in our forums.
Note: If you are running your ICQ Lite 1613 with the line in your HOSTS file pointing to ICQ-4U, and if you restart your ICQ, we have added a response on ICQ-4U to send the new, modified, ad-free banners.xml, so your client will be banner-free without having to do the file editing yourself.

MemberTo be fair to El Diablo, there were publicised “security holes” in ICQ.
I think this one was the most popular, and perhaps the only one:
http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2002-02.html
CERT® Advisory CA-2002-02 Buffer Overflow in AOL ICQ
but we need to make a distriction between “security holes” like the one above, and bugs/exploits like UIN spoofing and fun stuff like that.

MemberThe bugs during the 98, 99 releases is what made ICQ fun!
* UIN spoofing
* system message spoofing
* flooding
* et cetera -
