hi rj…
well, some of the rooms are active at certain times, depending on the groups that normally use them. most often, people on the sonork network create their own chatrooms (it’s pretty easy) for private meetings or host their own rooms with chatbot. for example, ultranet and codeproject generally meet in private rooms despite “public” permanent ones being available.
in general, most of the users are either pretty private people, or have a “purpose” behind their “chatting” so many dont often use the public rooms unless something is happening in one of them.
SonorkGuyMemberHi again, Jeff!
Well, I see your point about the “one more client syndrome” and agree, or would — except perhaps in the case of SRK. Folks might just find it worth their while to have an alternative, secure, private comms channel – many do. Then again, others do not – I guess it is a matter of personal tastes, needs, and priorities.
But then once again, perhaps when gim gets up to speed (ETA: 2-3 weeks) that may be a more interesting option – it does offer interoperability that works, tho (we can discuss more detail, if you want, separately), plus other things that may also be useful for a site-based IM app.
Anyway, just some ideers… :o)
SonorkGuyMemberwell, GIM *is* beta and i think it’s labelled as such on the links. as far as the wisdom in making it available, you could have a point, but then there are reasons – good or bad – for it, one being the volume of requests we got for it in any form. i’m not suggesting that i think it’s the best ideer, tho, either… ;o) – and besides, i’m running an OS that’s 2 generations old that many people still consider as “beta”. hehe
Be that as it may, it will soon be in MUCH better shape. If you want, I’ll let you know when it is ready for civilized use.
Sonork, as i mentioned at the beginning, *IS* in good shape, though… sorry for whatever confusion, but GIM and Sonork are two completely different things at the moment, with Sonork being by far the older brother…and more responsible one. ;o)
SonorkGuyMemberwell, regarding budget…they’d probably spend less time on money on a GOOD private IM network than they spend on blocking the public ones (and the related software). It does NOT need to cost much. also…
if they used it adminstratively as well, it would pay for itself in saved phone costs, paper, and work/time lost, i bet…not to mention the benefits the school – and the students – could gain. they should consider it – at least check out the options.
Regards,
SonorkGuyMemberHrm. I could go on for days here…
…but I’ll spare you that!! But when it comes to risk/security, yes, using PUBLIC IM networks in business is suicide. But there ARE secure IM options, and I don’t mean slapping filters and message managers on at your firewall at big bucks a seat…
In fact, a private, secure IM network can be a huge boost to a companies effectiveness in many ways – provided it is USED effectively and deployed sensibly. IM does NOT need to be equated to risk – it’s better equated to efficiency and effectiveness.
One thing that’s an issue is the cloudiness existing between the various flavors of IM, i.e. “Consumer Instant Messaging” (CIM) and “Enterprise Instant Messaging” (EIM). Of course, the big three like to keep it cloudy until they get their acts together, and the media does wonders in supporting that, however there is, and should be, a clear distinction, and for important reasons.
But…I promised to spare you a rant, so…I will! Have a good one!
SonorkGuyMemberheck, IM’s my “life”….
…and yeah, i’d get a new one, but i need to keep the butter on the bread…and coming to the table. ;o)
SonorkGuyMemberHi – if you’d like, add me to ur user list – i can show you around if you’d like.
At the moment, it’s text-based, but it can do a lot of little “nice” things that make it quite convenient to use. Conference rooms are either admined by the person who creates it, or the few permanent ones there are admined by those assigned. They are not all that busy, as most of the users there either create their own private rooms (we have several groups who hang out there (programmers, education-related groups, etc.), or prefer to communicate 1-1 with the people they know.
you can check out the tracker system for something that may be of interest… enjoy!
SonorkGuyMemberNope, we’re not related to Clearchannel – they are an early customer of GIM, and the email is automated — and will likely be changed to a more generic version soon.
About Sonork, we’ve had a permanent public server open for quite a while. We don’t advertise it much as it was originally intended to be a demo/test, but we keep it up for users to access free (and to avoid the bodily harm that would come from some quarters should we ever take it down). ;o)
You can download the Sonork client from here:
https://gtv.com/dw/sonork-client-installer.exe -or- from the GTV website downloads section.
When you install Sonork, just accept the defaults – it will create an account for you, then you can log on relatively simply. I think you’ll like Sonork.
As for fat-fingering with GIM, well…it’s possible. When I can talk to you more naturally, I can try to help find out where it’s going wrong, and in the meantime I’ll ask some people about possible XP issues. It actually works better it seems, but like I said, it’s being reworked and it will be a much better product VERY soon.
thanks for your patience…!!
SonorkGuyMemberGIM is in the process of being re-worked, but it should do okay for you…
I’d suggest checking out Sonork first – it’s a bit more straightforward and is pretty bullet-proof (and it’s more my side of the house)…I can maybe help you get your GIM working, or can find someone who can, much more easily online. Most likely it’s some config issue, but generally the logon should be no prob (I just checked and server’s up).
If I can help, I’ll do what I can, though. Did you get the ID made? When you tried to sign in did you use the password?
SonorkGuyMembernot a bad ideer, but…
what if your friends and acquaintances don’t WANT their info spread around without their knowledge and approval? and who knows who you could be putting them in touch with or expose them to…? could be some good contacts, could also be some scam artists, or worse…
SonorkGuyMemberi still use IRC from time to time, but it can be annoying. The big public ones are populated by MANY strange people (even if they are in fact a minority, they’re a very “expressive” one!) which gets annoying if you venture into any of the larger public channels, and sometimes getting on to an available server can be a challenge (i.e. DalNet). the smaller, more specialized private ones can have their own “unique” issues (never ever ever ever ever accept file transfers unless it’s from your wife or direct blood relative and they are sitting at a machine within eyeball range and they’ve verbally confirmed to you it’s them sending you the file – and if you’ve ever done ANYthing that they could be pissed about, well, think twice even in that case! but then, that’s a good SOP for accepting ANY file transfer on any public messaging system!). still, it’s a good way to hook up with people, and you can sometimes find people in the same places years after you first met them. Maybe someday there’ll be secure IM networks structured similar to that… ;o)
SonorkGuyMemberIf you want a relatively simple way to do what you want to do, and if you can deal with a *different* IM app, then check out the DevZone at http://sonork.gtv.com and look for the link to the Web2Sonork script (scroll lower right side of the page) – that should do what you’re looking for…?
SonorkGuyMembertry http://sonork.gtv.com – downloads section.
SonorkGuyMemberHi Jeff,
Nice idea. Care to look at another option for your idea? ;o)
SonorkGuyMemberwell, there ARE some options to the Big Three (well, make it four if you count AIM and ICQ separately) – some that do allow for real privacy.
The things is, you SHOULD be able to use online messaging with an assumption of privacy, but that will generally always depend on the purpose and nature of the network you’re using, and you should keep that in mind.
