AIM/AOL Smileys are controlled by AOL’s servers. So when you send or recieve the SML font code to a chat session it downloads the GIF images to the pc into a bartcache directory. Once they have been cached to your pc there is no reason for it to be cached to your pc again. In the case of the Snowman, AOL doesn’t even have it as a selection for their AOL memembers so either they no longer offer that particular smiley or they are having server problems. Any user that has the Snowman already cached to their pc should continue to see it. 🙂
Actually if you sign up with AIM Expressions http://expressions.aol.com then the ad is replaced with your expression’s ad image. However it isn’t a free service for non-aol screen names so, AOL is going to make money one way or another either displaying an Ad of their choosing or getting you to pay for their Expression service.
AIMutation offers logging too and is also for free.

The signon screen image when using AIMutation is just a BMP image that is located in the root of your AIM95 directory. Just change that image to what you want in the BMP image format.
They have recently came out with a new version. You might try installing the new .31beta. Also, you might want to check out their forums for other users postings that maybe getting the same error as you. Chances are you will find an AIMutation solution on the AIMutation website.
Blocking IM spam (bots) is easy… just change your IM settings to only allow your buddies to IM you (block everyone execpt those on your buddy list) works great.
Buddy Icons and smileys are usually extension of ones personallity. You don’t like buddy icons don’t use them and you can even set your settings to not get your buddy’s icon.

They are usually trying to send you to a porn site so they can make money on your click thur. Use caution with IMs from unkown sources like you should with getting email from someone you don’t know.

That is because the patch you are using is contains a modifed AimRes.dll on each new release of AIM there will be a slightly different version of AimRes.dll. That patch was written to only work with AIM v5.1.3036, so you will need to downgrade to that version.
The program Dead AIM will remove the Ad and the ad space. Also, AIMutation will do the same http://www.aimutation.com don’t remember the web address for Dead Aim.

shodges I can probably get that for you from the US version. There were only two Smiley Sets that AOL currently offers in their expressions at the http://expressions.aol.com website, KidsArt and one other that I can’t remember off the top of my head. When I locate them I’ll shoot an email out to you with them attached.
