AOL already has an e-mail service that I believe all AIM members have access to. It’s pretty much “yourscreenname”@netscape.net
Actually, there is evidence that the surviving entity exists already, and it’s called AIM. Anyone with an ICQ number can sign into AIM (at least 5.9) with that number and view a buddy list as if they were an AIM member, in fact they can create an AIM profile, add AIM buddies as if they were ICQ buddies, and have other AIM users put them on their buddy lists as if they were AIM members. I don’t think an AIM member can log into ICQ, but an ICQ member can surely log into AIM (I’ve done it as recently as right now).
I’ve always been an AIM person (yeah I know that that’s sad) and then I had a friend suggest Trillian and another suggest GAIM. I found that I couldn’t stand Trillian and GAIM has improved quite a bit since I’ve started using it (It’s now my primary IM program). I tried Miranda out a little while ago and GAIM to me just seems a lot more functional and useful then any other IM program out there.
Trillian also allows people to sign on to the AIM service as away if it was set to away when they previsously signed off(although it doesn’t have a ghosting feature).
Actually, with AIM you also can convert it to a whole suite of stuff if you sign into netscape.net. I believe I got a netscape.net screen name this way.
I don’t think there is much difference between 5.5.3572, 5.5.3583, and 5.5.3591 other then bug fixes. Yet the difference between 5.5.3415 and 5.5.3591 is rather significant. AIM 5.5.3415 doesn’t include the “invisibility” feature nor does it include “screen name linking” and it IS fully compatable with older versions of DeadAIM and AIMutation. Really 5.5.3415 is more of an update to AIM 5.2 wheras the AIM 5.5.35** s are the new versions with new features.
I had to vote for AIM because EVERYONE that I know uses AIM (a few also use MSN but all of my MSN contacts also use AIM). If I had a choice I’d choose MSN but where I live (Arizona) AIM seems like it is synonomous with Instant Messaging and where I used to live in Virginia AIM was the only real game in town because AOL was based there and everyone knew someone who worked for AOL, etc. As far as user interface, I think that MSN by far is the best of the big 4 (although I only use AIM, GAIM, and Trillian Pro).
The easiest thing to do is to save your buddy list, create a new SN, and load the buddy list to the new SN and see if people are visible there who weren’t visible on your buddy list. Of course, this doesn’t work if the other person removed you from their buddy list and had the “only let people on my buddy list communicate with me” feature turned on.
Go here: http://gaim.sourceforge.net to figure out what Gaim is all about. It’s pretty much a lite version of AIM that also has multi-protocol support.
Well, your best bet if you want a free add on for AIM that does that would be to download Middle Man, Aimutation, or pay the $5 for DeadAIM. If you’re willing to try something a bit different you could try Gaim (I love this program) which has a really nice built in conversation logger.
Yeah, which kinda stinks, but such is AOL. I sometimes wish that people would switch to MSN but everyone I know uses AIM.
Yeah, I bought Trillian Pro and while it is nice, it’s definately not worth it. Gaim has everything you need and then some.
I think it’s kinda funny when people do that (although I do have the sounds off and only those little popup notifications).
