CNET News.com is reporting that Yahoo will launch a dramatic upgrade to Yahoo Messenger on Monday. This new version includes personal avatars (similar to MSN’s display pictures or AIM’s buddy icons), 13 new smileys and tighter integration with other Yahoo services like photo sharing and Internet radio.

April 26, 2004 at 4:01 am #46185912ParticipantYahoo is getting better! Finally a change. They’ve had the same style for years! Anyone got any screen shots of the new Yahoo?
April 26, 2004 at 5:08 am #46175blurrydeMemberYeah, the new beta just came out minutes ago http://messenger.yahoo.com/beta/winbeta.php;_ylt=AjoW1jwXst7Ic.z4NjD.wfUN2sEF
Well at least it showed up on the main page minutes ago, and there is a screenshot and a download there
It’s Really nice.. Great interface and you can listen to Launch Music, and have the song name display next to your nickname.. I really am starting to like this alot:)
April 26, 2004 at 5:31 am #46191ceeweedMemberDo you have to uninstall your present Yahoo IM before installing new version?

No, but make sure you don’t have it running during installation of the new version. If you are planning on installing the beta, (instead of waiting a few hours for the final release, make sure you heed Yahoo’s warning:
Quote:quote:This is a beta version of Yahoo! Messenger (Windows only), intended to help us test the newest version of our product and give people a preview of new features and functionality. Beta versions of software are pre-releases and may contain undiscovered issues. We recommend that this software only be downloaded by people who are familiar with Yahoo! Messenger. Using this Beta version in your own setting is “as-is” and at your own risk.April 26, 2004 at 5:57 am #46190ceeweedMemberLOL….I think I’ll wait……………thanks
April 26, 2004 at 6:45 am #46146shifterMemberJudging from the beta, I’m impressed. Yahoo! has taken a big step here, updating the look and adding alot of features that users actually wanted. Integrated SHOUTcast Radio, Avatars, Games, Audibles, Skins, Stealth Settings, and new Smileys. The beta is pretty buggy with the SHOUTcast Radio stuff, but everything else seems to work pretty good. I like the beta and I will definately upgrade on Monday. Although its starting to look a heck of alot like MSN Messenger.
April 26, 2004 at 8:29 am #46192MarrubiumMemberI have downloaded the new version of Yahoo! Messenger and I really like it considering that it is a Beta and all still. The only real thing im still not too fond about is the fact that it deletes your offline messages once you close the offline message box which I do know that they will be stored in your archives if you have your archives turned on but, Keeping some messages in the offline folder is somewhat handy, Atleast I think so anyways 😉 I really am impressed though with the new version! 🙂

April 26, 2004 at 9:34 am #46187doc rockMemberWell, we knew something was in the works for the last couple of months but this surpasses any expectations I had. It seems Yahoo has really listened to its users this time and is definitely trying to make a run against MSN now. I guess we should get ready for this forum to get busy with a new flood of questions now 😀 Hopefully this release by Yahoo will go smoother than MSN’s release of 6.2 but in the regards of supprot, Yahoo still has a lot to prove yet. We shall see.
April 26, 2004 at 9:47 am #46128BrianMemberI have just given Yahoo! Messenger another chance and I must say I am impressed with what I am seeing now. Yahoo does seem to have improved a lot over the years.
I look forward to the day, when Yahoo releases the official client – maybe I will start using it more.
April 26, 2004 at 11:04 am #46166IMQueenMemberI’m testing it. Seems OK so far. I’m not using that radio thing though. When’s the final version supposed to be out?
April 26, 2004 at 1:23 pm #46174blurrydeMemberIf I’m reading this right, Monday ( Today )
April 26, 2004 at 2:40 pm #46123detn8rParticipantThey released both the BETA, and final version in the same day?!
