To clarify, the version introduced today (Monday) is a preview (i.e. BETA) version of Yahoo Messenger, not a final release.
April 26, 2004 at 3:10 pm #46129BrianMemberGreat, thanks Jeff! I assume Yahoo will release the final one next week?
I’m having a little problem with Yahoo! Messenger, where my off-line contact list does not show in the drop-down list. It will show up only if someone gets on-line.EDIT- It seems that Yahoo has fixed the bugs, it is working for me now…
April 26, 2004 at 3:35 pm #46122detn8rParticipantI think this outbeats MSN Messenger in everyway – other than the fact that most of my contacts don’t use Yahoo.
I just viewed the tour and it’s unbelievable with the new features, the so-to-point new smilies, and being able to be invisible to selected contacts.
An unbelievably well done Messenger by far. I wouldn’t have expected this by Yahoo.
Microsoft, wake up. Take this as a point of advice. Listen to your users. Yahoo built this Messenger from it’s users’ opinions. You might benift from the same.
April 26, 2004 at 7:03 pm #46159IceMemberAnyone figured out how to edit the skins or new ones? I used to have a pic I used as a background for my buddy list and would love to add it again. Apart from that very nice indeed. Great update!
April 26, 2004 at 7:35 pm #46149freddyMemberFor anyone who is interested in some info on the Beta but who doesn’t feel confident in replacing the stable with the beta, or anyone else, here is a short summary: http://www.helpbytes.co.uk/messbeta6.php
That also includes all 15 of the new smileys and the codes used to post them.
April 26, 2004 at 8:35 pm #46150freddyMemberThe Tour isn’t available on all servers yet, some people will find a Not Found On Server error in its place…
April 26, 2004 at 8:44 pm #46121detn8rParticipantI appoligize, that is my fault. Link updated.
April 26, 2004 at 8:48 pm #46131CharlesMemberWow! This is extremely impressive. The ShoutCast radio is awesome! I normally listen to it in Winamp but now I can just do it through the messenger. The skins aren’t bad and I am extremely happy Yahoo! has chosen to remain with an ad-free instant messenger. No spyware either, if only all the stupid AOL and AIM users would switch…I would. 🙁
April 26, 2004 at 9:11 pm #46170matthewMemberWOW This is great! The new yahoo messenger I think is about to kick msn’s ass.
April 26, 2004 at 10:16 pm #46136OreoMemberThis is AWESOME and it’s only BETA…Can’t wait to d/l the real thing. One word of warning to those of you who like to be invisible completely. I checked out the privacy settings and you have to tell them that you don’t want to let people know you are online when they visit a Yahoo! site. The whole stealth mode thing is AWESOME. I’m just wondering if that will cause problems with people checking if one is invis. or offline. not to mention…”why are you visible to her and not ME?” Or well….I hate to be a pessimist…so I won’t be…I think I’ll change my Yahoo! Avatar to HAPPY!!
April 27, 2004 at 4:13 am #46176mousearomaMemberI’ve been a Yahoo! member since 1993, and up until now have been unimpressed with their design and features, sticking mainly with AIM since most of my friends have AOL. HOW TIMES CHANGE!
Yahoo! has taken the lead, blowing MSN’s IM out of the water! Here a few[/b] of the changes:
1. New design, almost identical to that of Windows XP, no matter what Windows version you are using. It even includes skins so you can change its design and color further…sorta like the latest IE for Macs.
2. All features are interlinked, turning your IM into a one-stop-shop.
3. Includes several games you can play in chat…similar to AIM’s, but far more advanced.
4. Offers LaunchCast radio in IM.
5. Avatars allow you to customize a character based on looks, facial features, clothes, attitude, surroundings, etc…surpasses AOL’s pathetic buddy icons.
6. 3D graphics are far better than anything I’ve ever seen in an IM.
7. Address book included in the IM, enabling a new search feature.
8. New invisibility features allow you to customize your invisibility per friend.
9. Same design applies to chat rooms.
10. “Audiables” allow you to send comical pre-recorded tphrases to your buddy.
11. New emoticons have been added, including more advanced #D designs.
12. Send file features have been added, similar to AIM’s.The list continues….
A new version of Yahoo! IM was expected, but this is simply a brilliant display of Yahoo!’s superiority over AOL. Oh…don’t be afraid to send e-mail to their tech support department…they’ll actually respond, unlike their AOL counterpart!
If you have AOL, and like what you see, don’t forget that SBC Yahoo! now has moved up to number 2 on the top dial-up ISP list, and that some rumors have been circulating that Time Warner is looking to sell AOL’s division! Well see what happens! 😀
April 27, 2004 at 4:45 am #46180Spit_fireMemberI have noticed a probelm with the new yahoo… If you try to use the voice feature in a chat room it comes back with the message of voice server returned an unexpected error. Could this be do to the fact the beta has not be programed to be intergrated with the chat session?

April 27, 2004 at 7:01 am #46156Goody111MemberI tried downloading the around 5 MB beta through the installer. But I have a dialup connection. So it got disconnected. Does anyone know how can download the full 5 MB Messenger exe and then install it so that I can use on other computers too without again facing the download disconnection problems with my dialup connection?
