CNET News.com is reporting that Yahoo will launch a dramatic upgrade to Yahoo Messenger on Monday. This new version includes personal avatars (similar to MSN’s display pictures or AIM’s buddy icons), 13 new smileys and tighter integration with other Yahoo services like photo sharing and Internet radio.

May 10, 2004 at 8:14 pm #46183neo_ny_23MemberWhatever guys, the new Yahoo! Messenger (Beta) rockzzz…
May 10, 2004 at 8:26 pm #46143shifterMemberWho said it didn’t?
May 16, 2004 at 4:47 am #46201conf88MemberJust curious if anyone else has had problems with the stealth mode? I’ve had people set to “permanently offline” starting conversations with me as if they could see me plain as day. I’m pretty sure it’s not that they are just blindly sending messages to me thinking I’ll get them later because it’s happened with more than one person on my list.
I had someone “test” it out with me and after having him on “permanently offline” for a few hours he suddenly said “hey you just went online”
Anyone else experienced similar problems?
May 16, 2004 at 9:17 am #46182neo_ny_23MemberYa I am also facing the same problem, but……. not all the time and not with all the users…Some friends to identify me online even if they are on permanent offline list. I don’t know how isit happening.
May 19, 2004 at 2:33 am #46163WolfriderMemberAny news on a Mac version of it?
May 22, 2004 at 8:10 pm #46104Jeff HesterKeymasteryoo hoo!!
Seems yahoo just updated its beta, because now the installation wizard of the beta version looks different. I’m sure some of the bugs might have been fixed in it.
So just update your beta and see whats new and what has been fixed in it 😀 (these betas seems a little buggy in upadte, so I would recommend uninstalling any previous version first before you installtion beta or “updated beta”, or in some case you roll back to regular version)
[by the way, why are the post notifications in bigblueball turned off?]
May 25, 2004 at 3:04 pm #46103Jeff HesterKeymasterWell the new one is out. The official release. I see it the same. I’m sure they did a lot of bug fixes and stuff like that. Also they added a tab where you can check your mail and access it. Beta didn’t have that so it’s a relief to see that.
May 27, 2004 at 4:02 pm #46205dorkusMemberam I the only one who misses being able to invite users to chat? overall I am not happy with 6.0… it has many bugs. try clicking on a song that a user on your list is listening to with launch… it will crash messenger. sure, it’s pretty, but that doesn’t impress me. I might be more enthusiastic about the appearance of the program if it fuctioned better… I am thankful that Chet Simpson added the ability to turn nicknames off back in, because I despise viewing nicknames… especially when an idiot is on the mic and I cant find his name in the list to ignore him because his nickname has no correlation to his screenname.
May 27, 2004 at 6:10 pm #46203tarheel919MemberI don’t really think it is much better than the previous version. Sure, you have avitars, but who cares! I never will use them anyway. Also, if you want to view someone on cam in chat, you have to now click on their name to send a message, and then click on something else to drop down a menu to click on to view their cam. Before you could just right click on their name and click on view their cam. I don’t see anything that really makes it better. The stealth mode is cool, but you have to click on each individual person on your list to do it.

The avatars are just a small improvement. If you can’t see, nore understand what has changed, then you must be blind.May 27, 2004 at 7:35 pm #46133OreoMemberQuote:quote:I despise viewing nicknames… especially when an idiot is on the mic and I cant find his name in the list to ignore him because his nickname has no correlation to his screenname.Hey negative nelly, have you ever looked at the list when someone is talking…you can tell who they are even when you don’t know their nickname…it’s been like that for a long time. There is a symbol that flashes next to their name in the list that looks like this: ((( and it means they are talking. There are a lot of good things about this new version and some of the things you think are missing have just moved to different spots. look around a bit. 🙂
EDIT: I forgot to add that you can choose to be visible to an entire group if you have your id’s separated that way. So you don’t have to do them one at a time. 🙂
June 1, 2004 at 6:51 pm #46202tarheel919MemberIt would be a lot better if you could put certain groups off people as seeing you offline in stealth mode instead of having to click on every single person you don’t want to see you as offline. Also, the clicks you have to go through to see a cam in chat now is a pain compared to before when you just right clicked on their name in the list and clicked View Webcam.
June 3, 2004 at 3:55 am #46162Namrepus221Memberwell I just downloaded and no less then 45 seconds later was uninstalling it and going back to 5.5.
5 MAJOR problems with YIM6
– Size of the Smiley’s on the “who’s online” buddy list. Too frickin big.
– the Look of the IM windows. I had to spend no less then 2 minutes canceling check marks and such to get the window to look like the IM window is the center of it instead of the 15 extra buttons and graphics that aren’t needed. The less said about the “Send File” etc buttons the better. Too large.
– Yahoo Mail shortcut. Annoying because I’ll never use it and it’s taking up space in my taskbars
– The new “:D” Icons. Too big, really annoying because I start stairing at that instead of other parts of my computer that I should be looking at (really annoying while playing MAME Pac-Man)
– The unremoveable “search” and “folder” bars along the bottom that are way to large. Makes teh window bigger thn is should be.I’m running 1024×768 and this thing is taking up WAY too much space even for me.
Am I the only person waiting till someone makes a hack to make this look more like 5.5 before they will download 6?
