If you are suspicious, why don’t you talk to her? Spying on her or reading her chats is a serious violation of privacy and trust on YOUR part. Rise above that, and communicate.
That said, many employers install software that records all IM history (usually for regulatory reasons, i.e. Sarbanes Oxley). So there is software that accomplishes this. Just think hard about whether you really want to go that route and risk losing her trust in YOU, rather than communicating and dealing with the issue head-on.
FanaticMemberDid you give it a try? Let me know how it works for you. I’ve only used the Mac version.
FanaticMemberYes, I can tell you what I use: Handbrake. There are versions for Mac and PC, it’s free, and it will rip and compress DVDs into a number of formats (including iPhone/iPod Touch, Sony PSP, etc.).
Works great!
FanaticMemberGraham, have you contacted Sami? Is there anyone else outside of staff that we might contact? Do we consider opening the invitation in the public forum?
FanaticMemberAre there non-staffers or “alumni” that you think might be interested?
FanaticMemberI could possibly drive out. It’s about a 4-5 hour drive, depending on traffic. It would be fun to get some folks together.
Anyone seriously interested? Do we open this up to other members?
FanaticMemberI know everyone has their personal preferences. Twitter is a good way to share the things you’re interested in with your friends and contacts. You don’t have to use it, of course. I only started this thread so I could find out who DOES use it and get their username.
FanaticMemberTonight I was listening to a couple full Genesis albums (or whatever you call them nowadays).
First, Trespass, their first album, originally released in 1970 (with Peter Gabriel as lead vocalist).
I followed that with A Trick of the Tail, originally released in 1976, and the first album featuring Phil Collins as lead vocalist.
I still love progressive rock.
FanaticMemberActually, you can connect to AIM using iChat… it’s built-in! But you’ll need to setup your own AIM account first (free) at Instant Messenger – AIM – Instant Message Your Online Buddies for Free – AIM
Then go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts, click the + button, choose AIM Account as the type, enter your AIM screen name and password. Voila!
You can also sign in with your Google Talk account.
Now if you want to connect to WLM, AIM, etc…. it IS possible, but it’s not easy. You first have to “connect” your WLM, Yahoo and other accounts to your Google Talk account. Then you can sign in via Google Talk and you’ll see the other accounts.
It involves a fair amount of trickery to get it all working, but it can be done.
This topic will give you an overview of the process: https://bigblueball.com/forums/general-other-im-news/33739-connect-google-talk-aim-msn-yahoo.html
One of our guests recently posted step-by-step instructions for connecting iChat to WLM (MSN) on his blog: Passions Just Like Mine: Use iChat with GTalk and MSN Messenger Contacts
Between the two posts, you should be set. Let us know how it goes!
FanaticMemberI only have a lowly iPhone 3G (not S), so i haven’t tried it.
EDIT: Actually, I did a quick search for Telenav on the iTunes App Store but there are no apps found. Maybe they’ve announced it, but it’s not out yet (unless it goes by a different name).
FanaticMemberRather than delete them, I prefer the approach of contacting the member privately, but also counter posting replies that give ample warning to others. This ultimately gets indexed by google, so when people stumble across this stuff about SweetIM, they at least get exposed to the “other” point of view (watch out, it’s bad, caveat emptor).
Some people are crazy enough to love that shtuff.
FanaticMemberSo you got spam at an address that doesn’t show up anywhere? Is that what you’re saying?
Facebook doesn’t sell email addresses, but I think it’s possible that some spammers use dictionary attacks to simply GUESS potential email addresses. It doesn’t cost anything to send more emails, generally, so it doesn’t hurt if they bounce back.
FanaticMemberDoris, your article got picked up by another site. 🙂
FanaticMemberPhilip, just a reminder that stuff in the News Room is invisible to everyone except staff. This area is mainly a “feed” for potential news articles on the front page of BBB.
With that in mind, do you think we should publish something about the Firefox 3.5 release?
