i read the advisory,As you can see it only does one thing, change one reg key and back again, would seem mcafee thinks it could be harmful because it edits the registry and doesn’t have a publisher id like microsoft/google/yahoo, so they have given it a threat level 3 or “Minor risk issue found”, i don’t use mcafee or trust them, but if the file is giving that much a problem i will delete it.
Thanks Dermot. Could you host the file somewhere else and create a link that page? I suspect a direct link to the file would be treated the same by McAfee.
FanaticMemberActually, that’s Dermot’s file from this thread: https://bigblueball.com/forums/yahoo-messenger-support/36408-y-messenger-8-0-multi-patch.html
Dermot, can you comment on this?
FanaticMemberWe do NOT use pop-up ads here at BigBlueBall.
I’m digging into this now. If anyone wants to join me in this search, please do. If you get a pop-up blocked notice, please reply here and let me know what you did or what you clicked on when that came up.
FanaticMemberI have disabled the Facebook Connect login capability, as this was causing no end of woes. This will very likely cause some pain to folks who ONLY ever registered or signed in using their Facebook account, but everyone else (most people) should be fine.
Please let me know here if you run across any residual side-effects from turning FB Connect off.
FanaticMemberYes, just a redirect, and only if you come through Google search results to a forum page. They don’t actually get into the database, they used an exploit in the URL rewrite code of vbSEO. I’ve patched and corrected the problem.
FanaticMemberFinally turned the Twitter feed off (just for the forum posts). Now when new posts go up on the front page, those get tweeted, but not the forum posts (which is where all the video encoder spam shows up).
If you want to tweet a forum post to stir up participation, feel free! Please give it a test run to make sure it’s working right for you.
FanaticMemberThanks for the update, MrOats. I think all of us can relate to being busy from time to time (some of us ALL the time!). Glad to hear you’re doing better though.
Glad to hear from you and hope to see you say hello more frequently. I’ll do the same! 🙂
FWIW, I’m currently juggling a very busy work schedule and a deluge of web projects. I’ll be online 24-7 for a while. :S
They say misery loves company. 🙂
FanaticMemberI sent you an invitation to co-manage the @bigblueball account. I’ll change the avatar associated with it, and we should probably create a custom background for the Twitter page (although the format is changing).
I’m trying to figure out how to turn OFF the damned twitterfeed thing. I can’t remember my account info, and the process has changed since I originally signed up. I should have that cleared up later today.
Co-Tweet is managed through a web interface. It’s kinda nice, because you can include your personal Twitter account(s), easily see mentions and DMs, etc. Oh, and you can schedule future tweets. Nice for reminders.
FanaticMemberLegit Amazon links? Do they embed an affiliate code at least? If not, this may be the work of the stupidest spammer ever!
FanaticMemberNo, this isn’t the usual spam. It’s a strange uptick and Gmail’s normally good spam detection is not catching most of it. Weird. Guess I’m just the lucky one! 🙂
March 19, 2010 at 2:40 am in reply to: ** The Kissing Competition for Boys & Girls – Don’t miss it ** #176749FanaticMemberThat wasn’t really funny, nor was it “a partner of your choice.” Just lame.
FanaticMemberI’m still seeing some stuff get through without moderation. They show up in the BigBlueBall twitter feed. I’ll keep watching to see if the Akismet thing is getting “smarter.” I appreciate everyone’s help keeping the forums spam-free.
FanaticMemberWell, I’m a day late and a dollar short, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sami!

Well, I haven’t seen the massive spammers back since the change…
But there is still the regular stuff. I’m not familiar with how this particular spam filter works, but most of them have a way to learn what words need to be banned. Does the one-touch ban and clean report that back to a centralized black-list?
One-touch ban and clean does not report to a centralized black-list, but it does locally black-list the IP address of the offender.
The Akismet stuff is supposed to detect spam and flag it for moderation:
“The Anti-Spam API key is used to enable the scanning service for user generated data. The data will sent to the specified service for identification.
If the data is identified as spam, it will be marked for moderation to allow for verification by moderators. You should give your moderators the ‘Can Moderate’ permission to allow for this.”
FanaticMemberI don’t see any difference?
