I hope Trillian kicks some serious AOL/M$/Yahoo ass! And I hope they find a way to make some coin as they do (WITHOUT ad banners). That’ll prove what I’ve believed all along; that if IMs were all interoperable, the winner is the one that gives me the best mix of useful features, in style. And NOT just the one with the biggest advertising budget.
Hats off to the Cerulean crew!

FanaticMemberWhat the hell is “leet speak” and why would anyone use this crap?

FanaticMemberAn interoperable messenger is one that is compatible with other instant messengers (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo).
If you vote for “other” be sure to post a reply that specifies why and what you’re voting for. Of course, if you wanna just say why you think you’re vote is the RIGHT vote, you’re entitled.

FanaticMemberbased on this discussion, i went ahead and created a poll titled What is your favorite interoperable messenger?
btw, nice feature… did you know ANY member can create a poll? heheh

FanaticMemberHere’s my two cents worth:
Assuming your running on Windows, and you want something that works with other messengers (AIM, Yahoo, etc.), you pretty much nailed the top choices; Odigo, Jabber & Trillian. I’ll tell you what i think of them, tho i haven’t used them all, so someone else will have to pipe in with their opinion too.
Odigo – been around a long time. I tried it once, but at the time they weren’t compatible with msn messenger. It was a little flakey, though the interface was kinda cool. They also have some very nice skins. I don’t run it any more, so maybe some current users can comment.
Jabber – I checked out Jabber, and it’s a cool concept. The weird thing is that they don’t have one network or one client. There are dozens of jabber clients, and the other IMs are supported by plugins on the server. The trick is finding a server that is reliable and that you can trust to be around (same for the clients). I ended up passing on Jabber, mostly because it seems like more of a developer’s plaything.
Trillian – I tried an earlier version of Trillian and had trouble staying connected to msn. Gave it up for a while, then gave it another try when the .70 version came out. This one is very cool. Very nice skins, and maintains the connections very reliably. I still have yahoo and msn on my system, but i now also have Trillian. Definately worth a look.

FanaticMemberBasically AOL doesn’t want to pay to support older versions, so it’s in their best interests (not MINE) to get everyone to upgrade to the very latest version, even if it is full of crap that I don’t want.
I used to like ICQ ‘cuz it was free, and it was a product of the people. Now it’s not only just a cog in a huge corp, but its grown to gargantuan proportions! And 90% of the time all i really want to do is your basic text chat!
I guess that’s why i don’t use it much anymore.
oh, and btw, I don’t have anything against big corporations, ‘cept when they forget that serving people is what makes or breaks them.

FanaticMemberI think this year is going to be a big one for finding security holes in ALL the instant messengers. As more and more businesses use IM, security will be more important, and more holes will be found (and patched up).

FanaticMemberInteresting question. IMHO, they’re already a threat, especially to small web site operators who graciously post images that get “borrowed” without permission (read stolen).
I’m thinking in particular of how some of the 5.0 versions of Yahoo Messenger allow some HTML, including images. People point to images served off of someone else’s web site, consuming bandwidth (which can be expensive) and slowing down their web site for no real gain.
Of course, when people start going nuts with that, the problem grows exponentially, to the point where all of us are effected because of the increased traffic flowing throught the ‘net.
I think some basic formatting is a good thing, but the rich media stuff has got to have it’s limits!

FanaticMemberNothing stinks as bad as day-old skunk road kill or the movie Mars Attacks. Campy is one thing, but this just made me shake my head and wonder what kinda bet Jack Nicholson must’ve lost.

FanaticMemberI guess any list is bound to have some things you disagree with. This one is weird. At least I’ve heard of all these bands, even if there’s a few that I can’t say I’ve listened to.
The Beatles are a no brainer.
The Ramones democratized rock-and-roll. Anyone can play three chords. Yeah!!!
Led Zeppelin was the trip of the 70s.
Bob Marley proves it was an equal-opportunity list. Though actually reggae had a huge influence on the Brit-rock scene.
Nirvana came into there own about the same time as Micro$oft, proving that Seattle can produce more than coffee and software mega-companies.
Parliament/Funkadelic? Not my scene.
The Clash kept the early 80s from getting too syrupy-electronic.
Public Enemy? Don’t know’em. Someone said they were rap or something.
Of course, the Stones has been carrying the torch longer than any of’em, and done it without getting stale. Though Keith Richards looks like death warmed over.
And the Beastie Boys? Well, they did make a helluva party song.
There’s a bunch of bands that DIDN’T make the list… no prog rock. No Bruce. Hmmph.

FanaticMemberThis is cool stuff. I HAD to include a little snippet of search trivia from the timeline.
Searches for “carol brady maiden name” coincide with the East and West coast airing of the million dollar question on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.”
Oh yeah… Google ROCKS!

FanaticMemberYou might find an answer at Yahoo’s official video mail help page:
FanaticMemberYou can emulate the effect of posting an image by itself (using the technique described above by Jeff) by experimenting with the font size and using a “space” character. You can enter the space character as an ASCII code: just string together “&” “nbsp” “;” (removing the quotes), and repeat as necessary.
