Doris KenneyParticipant
Thank you to all of you for your answers. I know the pocket PC is more limited than a regular computer but it’s been hard to find the answers I was looking for. Sounds like I’m probably better off getting an air card for the laptop than trying to go to a pocket PC. Thank you for your insights!
Doris KenneyParticipantWhen you login to WLM go to Tools/Options/Connection and refresh your connection BEFORE you start chatting with anyone. Then after that go to advanced settings on the same screen and test your TCP connection (it should come back saying you’re fine.) Then try chatting. I’ve had some success with this. If there is anything in SOCKS delete it as well. Good luck!
December 18, 2006 at 3:31 am in reply to: Am I a target of booters or is this something else? #155359Doris KenneyParticipantI was having the same issues on WLM and Yahoo a couple weeks ago. Since my Linksys router has a firewall on it – I disabled Windows firewall on my laptop and have had no more problems with frequent disconnects. I still get sporadic ones like I always have but not the ones every few minutes. Windows firewall was configured to allow both programs, and had previously worked fine. But with my recent upgrades to Beta versions on both YM and WLM I had begun to have issues. This seems to have fixed the majority of those problems. If you don’t have another firewall in place (such as your router) I don’t recommend this, but your Linksys probably does have one just make sure your firmware is up to date. Good luck I know how frustrating this can be!!
Doris KenneyParticipantWhen they were doing maintenance I was unable to log in when other people were getting back on. I had to login with Firewall no proxies to get back in. Once I did that I was able to login, and then changed back to no proxies. Might be worth a try to see if it gets you back in. But don’t forget to change it back or voice chat won’t work.
Doris KenneyParticipantI don’t know much about routers either, but my laptop was having much the same trouble as you’ve described. I was using a wireless router, but had some of the same issues on the pc connected to the same router. I had tried all the conventional fixes such as deleting the handshake policies, reinstalling clean versions of WLM, etc. I finally found two things that made a difference.
I was running Windows firewall on the laptop, and the router has a firewall as well. Although Windows firewall showed as allowing WLM I was having the issues. When I turned off Windows firewall on the laptop and just went with the router’s firewall – I stopped having many problems. Unless you have a router with a firewall on it I certainly wouldn’t recommend doing this. But I’ve found that many time, various firewalls, spyware protection, virus scanners etc don’t play nice with each other when they are both running. In my case the router has a firewall so I felt safe enough disabling the Windows one.
The other thing that seemed to help was disabling ALL pop up blockers. This included those buried in my internet properties, on IE and all the toolbars I have installed. I know it makes surfing the net a bit more annoying, but I spend more time on IM than surfing.
Once I did these two things I’ve had no trouble with my contacts not getting or sending messages. It also solved my problem of not being able to send or receive webcam on occasion, and the frequent disconnections I was experiencing. I don’t know if it will help anyone else, but perhaps one or both is worth a try. I had been struggling for several weeks with the problems before finding these solutions. The pop up blocker one came from a Yahoo group where several people claimed it had worked for them. I know these fixes sound a bit unorthodox and questionable but they did seem to work for me. I’d love to know if they work for anyone else.
Doris KenneyParticipantAre you on a wireless router by any chance? I found that I had to disable my firewall on my laptop and just go with the router firewall (even tho I had the program enabled to bypass my laptop firewall). The new WLM didn’t want to play nice with multiple firewalls going between components. I was experiencing this on Yahoo and WLM and it fixed the majority of the disconnect problems for both. Now I’m down to the “regular” amount of times it just randomly happens but the constant interruption of it is gone.
December 13, 2006 at 5:25 am in reply to: Accounts re-adding me that I’ve deleted, blocked users messaging me #154987Doris KenneyParticipantFor the last week any time I reboot and start 8.1 beta – any contact that I’ve blocked and/or deleted from my contact list comes up as a new request to add to their contact list. Very annoying considering it happens daily at this point – but it seems to rotate through which contact it’s going to ask for on any given day. It seems to be a WLM issue that they’re gonna have to work out.
Doris KenneyParticipantEagle_Kiwi – thanks for your thoughts! In my case, Yahoo games has not been the culprit as I’ve not been in a game lately when this occurrs. I also have friends to whom it has been happening who are on a pc directly connected to a cable modem, however from what I can find it happens more frequently with wireless connections.
I did find a couple ideas to consider. The first offers no solace as it may be related to the recent Windows XP updates, which would explain the different protocols all having similar issues. In that case it will be a wait and see if the programmers can fix it kind of problem.
The second which I have done, but have not had the chance to test with multiple chats going at the same time yet, was to completely disable UPnP in Windows XP (even tho supposedly service pack 2 fixed the problems associated with it.) Seems intensive gamers who also chat have had this issue for many months both wireless and wired. I use the Unplug’N’Pray small utility found at GRC | UnPlug n’ Pray – Disable the Dangerous UPnP Internet Server to disable it quickly and easily.
Since I did that late last night, I have not gotten any random disconnects from MSN (which I can confirm on the event viewer in MSN Plus!) and I assume no disconnects from the others since it usually requires a reboot to establish the connection again since my wireless card is touchy. But I do need to test it under heavy usage to see if this really fixed it.
I’ll let you know how it goes. Now if I can get webcam on MSN working well and manage to get my IM’s in and out without issue I’ll be all set LOL. Good luck on the Yahoo games issue – I’ve seen a lot of people with Yahoo issues lately and read that they are updating servers. It may take a few weeks for the Yahoo issues to smooth out and there may be nothing you can do but wait it out. Good Luck!
Doris KenneyParticipantGlad to hear I’m not the only one lately! I get booted from MSN, Yahoo & Paltalk all at the same time & lose my internet connection on my wireless laptop. The PC in the other room will still connect just fine & if I reboot the laptop I get back into all of them ok.
Interestingly, this all started in the last few days for me….when MSN had problems for a couple days. I’m having trouble sending & receiving webcam on MSN too. If I can manage to get it connected it will just disconnect webcam. Plus half the time certain users can’t get my IM’s or get any responses back to me even if we can both see each other as online, sometimes it just occurs in the middle of a conversation.
I’ve tried everything I can find to fix it to no avail. I’ve deleted the policies folder in the MSN registry, I’ve installed beta 8.1 on MSN as well as the latest Yahoo version & Paltalk versions hoping for more stable connectiions. No luck with any of it. If anyone has any ideas I’d love to hear them!! It seems the days of staying connected & operational for as long as you like are long gone at least for me. Sure wish someone could come up with a fix!!
