Doris KenneyParticipant
Are you using Windows XP or Vista? In Vista you may need to turn off your User Account Controls.
Doris KenneyParticipantHave you checked in tools / options / alerts & sounds to be sure the voice call sound is enabled?
Doris KenneyParticipantWell…that’s certainly an odd problem. I would normally suggest clearing your internet files: cookies, cache, temp files and then clearing out your java cache. However, while this certainly won’t hurt, I doubt it will be the answer since you’ve tried it on other machines with the same results.
I do believe I’ve heard you can be reported for various reasons to YH and it follows they have a way to block users from certain things. There are YH groups, and perhaps there is one for games that might have a more definitive answer for you. I’d love to know what happens and how it gets resolved.
Doris KenneyParticipantAre you by any chance using a new laptop….say with Vista…and maybe made by HP? If so – there’s a major problem with the webcams working with Vista. Just curious as to the operating system you’re using and the type of laptop with integrated cam. There are huge threads on some sites bout the HP cam problems.
DorisDoris KenneyParticipantJust a quick update…after 8 hours of trying to get Java to work properly again, found the issue of not connecting to the other Java sites was ISP related (GRRRR!) It finally broke free at 2AM just when I determined my router was ok and happened to try the same pages on another laptop and PC, and discovered Java issues on them all of a sudden.
So in theory I probably COULD have left 1.5.0_11 on my machine and it would have worked fine – just the problem happened at the same time I was testing Java. Nevertheless, I’ve uninstalled 1.5 and reinstalled 1.6 which made the same streaming problem happen. I’ve submitted a bug report to Java and will see what they have to say.
After all the hours of reinstalling, restoring and checking everything under the sun I’ve no eagerness to test it all out again. I’ll live with the streaming issue for now….can us other laptop if I feel compelled to look at straming cams. Thanks once again for the help! BBB is a wonderful place for help and ideas.
Doris KenneyParticipantOK – well….some progress….I uninstalled Java 1.6 and installed 1.5.11
Now the streaming webcam works fine. However, now other Java based pages like Yahoo Games won’t load at all.
I did update to 1.6.1 again after 1.5.11 was installed and the webcam no longer streamed just like before. So I uninstalled it again, and it works fine.
I do believe I’m going to have to do a system restore as the other java based pages are ones I’m on far more frequently than the streaming webcam and nothing seems to work to load them now. Sad to have to do that but at least I know what the problem is now.
Thanks for your help…..I really appreciate it!!
Doris KenneyParticipantHave you checked to make sure there are no firmware upgrades for your router and made sure your date and time are correct on your router? If you disconnect the router and WLM sorts itself out this could be the root of the problem, and might alleviate having to do the disconnect every time you reboot.
Good luck! And I’m glad to hear you found a workaround no matter what – I know how frustrating it is when it doesn’t work correctly!!
Doris KenneyParticipantI’ll try downloadind the previous version of Java. Mine came with 1.6 pre-installed. I believe I can download 1.5 without deleting 1.6 and just enable them all, but will see. If need be I can uninstall 1.6.
Curious though….the picture streamed just fine? Did you do an upgrade to Vista from XP or are you on pre-installed? I’ve noticed some of the problems can be solved for upgrades as opposed to OEM installations of the product.
Thanks for checking this out…..does seem to point more toward my machine although if it’s not Java I won’t know which way to turn. Will post my results later this evening after I get home. Thanks again!
Doris KenneyParticipantDundee City Council Scotland – SPIN-SOCITM Best WebSite Award Winner 2001
I’m on preinstalled Vista Home Premium, java 1.6.0_01-b06, IE 7. The page connects fine (but with a static instead of streaming picture). I can take control of the camera & all the controls work, however my picture never changes. I tested it with a friend tonight telling them which camera I was choosing & what i was doing with the controls & they said it behaved exactly as it should from their view (obviously not Vista.) Only problem is my picture is exactly the same one as when it initially connected to the site. An F5 refresh reconnects to the cam with a fresh image but again it’s static.
Another person on XP & IE7 tested it & it worked fine there, leading me to believe it’s a Vista quirk – or I have something not set right in my settings somewhere I just haven’t discovered yet.
Although they don’t all have cameras with controls – there are other java cams at Technology-Enabled Webcams and I’ve tried a couple of those to confirm the problem is not the individual website.
I’m able to watch other streaming video (not Java webcams) like the Panda Cam and YouTube with no problems at all. And I’ve no problems with any other Java based games or anything so this is a complete mystery to me.
Thanks for any insight – I’ve Googled and Googled to no avail on this one!
Doris KenneyParticipantJeff – it’s a feature I’ve used in the past with minimal issues. No changes to my environment lately on either my laptop or my PC. XP on the PC, Vista on the laptop. My contact is running XP. I have the latest versions of WLM, he has the one from the forced upgrade back in the fall. I’m 99% sure his UPnP is enabled and on his end his cam shows fine on his end until I click accept then it all goes south.
It worked as late as last week, though I had to completely shut WLM down and relog in to receive my contacts cam. On the PC I was only trying to view cam not send. On the laptop it’s both and I’ve not been successful with this contact in weeks.
I was able to send cam last night to a contact here in the US and it did not lock me up at all. So it appears to be some kind of conflict with this contact, although as I said – as late as last week it was working.
I was just wondering as I’ve seen at least a dozen different posts on various boards – but no one seems to have an answer. And several of those seems to find it to be contact specific as well. I too want to use cam only with text (no voice) as you did. I’ve spent lots of time trying to get familiar with the problems WLM has and how to resolve them, and this is one that has me stumped. But as I said it could just be a server issue and perhaps it will miraculously resolve itself.
Thanks for your input I appreciate it. BBB is a wonderful resource!!
DorisDoris KenneyParticipantI’m curious if it isn’t the firewalls causing the problem. My first reaction is you’ve got Vista Firewall and Norton on the same machine and both running? Most firewalls don’t play well together. Also if you’re on a wireless router for your laptop (as I am) some of them have a built in firewall. I also got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium preloaded. I disabled the Vista firewall and did not elect to use Norton as my router has a built in firewall. I’ve had no trouble logging in. Occasionally I get the try again screen, but when I do I’m always successful so I doubt it’s a conflict with Yahoo and Vista causing the problem. In the past, even on XP, when I had firewalls set to allow MSN and Yahoo I had various problems so I chose to disable mine and run only the router firewall with great success. Good Luck! (But please do make sure you have some firewall protection – I am NOT advocating no firewall at all!!)
Doris KenneyParticipantI read on the WLM discussion pages that if UPNP is not enabled on BOTH yours and your friends machine – the program can be “unreliable”. I had issues with disappearing text for a while. I made sure UPNP was enabled and also all pop-up blockers (including all toolbars like Google or Yahoo) were disabled. That seemed to fix my problem. That said – if your friend does not have it enabled as well the problem could indeed be stemming from her end. Good luck!
Doris KenneyParticipantWelcome to the world of Vista where nothing works quite the way you expect! I had 2 Logitech cams I’d been using on WLM for quite some time with no issues, but when I got my new laptop with Vista Home Premium – nothing but problems.
I downloaded the drivers from the Logitech site (which clearly said for Vista) but had consistant problems. I finally found some articles indicating Logitech cams don’t seem to play nice with Vista just now. I went and got a Miscrosoft Vista compatible cam and it installed like a charm and worked beautifully.
Sorry I can’t offer any solutions on how to fix the problem – but after several days of installing uninstalling and trying both the Vista standardly detected drivers and the Logitech drivers I was unsuccessful in getting the Logitech product to work with Vista. Good Luck!!
Doris
Doris KenneyParticipantThanks for the info! I was really afraid of that. Well I guess I’ll be running 2 laptops until they get it fixed – the new one for everything but Yahoo Voice conference. I do appreciate the quick response though – at least now I won’t struggle with it any longer on the new machine until it’s fixed.
Doris KenneyParticipantI’ve had the same problem before! I found a post in another forum suggesting you disable ALL pop up blockers including those on any toolbars such as yahoo or google you may have added. That seemed to do the trick for me. As to why? I have no idea but it worked in my case. Good luck I know how frustrating it is.
