Doris KenneyParticipant
I don’t think you can add fonts to WLM just by installing them on your computer. You might be able to do it via skinning with Plus! or another 3rd party program but I’ve never tried it.
Doris KenneyParticipantFirst off, the user can certainly turn off archiving and that will completely remove any possibility. However, based on a quick search – your archives are NOT stored in the folder you listed. From what I find they are stored in %LocalAppData%VirtualStoreProgram FilesYahoo!Messenger. You can see that in this Yahoo Help Page.
In Windows 7 it’s a convoluted process to get to them via menus and they are certainly not in a nice simple public folder.
Doris KenneyParticipantSounds like a load of crud to me. Probably someone trying to get you worked up on purpose.
Obviously, if they are smart enough to have a program showing “raw” data being sent to you – then they likely are smart enough to know how stop it. If you’d installed something on their machine, a good antivirus would be picking it up as malicious. If you were somehow eluding antivirus detection, a properly configured firewall would stop the outbound data to an unapproved IP, now wouldn’t it?
Each person is really responsible for their own security online. If they really believe it is happening then there are certainly plenty of forums where they can request assistance to figure out how to stop malicious activity from happening on their machine if they don’t know how to deal with it.
My only advise for you would be if there was any possibility that your Yahoo ID was hacked and is being used remotely by someone, then you might want to scan your computer to ensure it’s clean and then change your Yahoo password. If (and I stress if) your account were being accessed without your knowledge, this would probably take care of the problem.

February 22, 2011 at 12:23 pm in reply to: Windows Live Messenger Microphone and Audio Issues #163250Doris KenneyParticipantIf it was working yesterday, and today it is not – more than likely it is a server issue and will probably resolve itself on it’s own.
From what I can see, there are some issues going on with Windows Live at the moment. I’d suggest just waiting a bit and seeing if it doesn’t take care of itself.
Please feel free to post any time you have a question. It is never a bother! That’s what we’re here for. If this doesn’t resolve in a day or so please let us know and we can try to dig deeper.
(If you just can’t wait it out (and believe me I know how hard that can be!) you could try Skype. Yahoo is notoriously flaky on video – but Skype is generally pretty good. WLM is my favorite, but in a pinch it doesn’t hurt to have a backup!)
Doris KenneyParticipantThey’ve changed how things work in the newest version. You can’t block and unblock people now. But you can right-click them on your contact list and appear offline to the specific contact. The only thing is that the messages sent to you by that contact will still come through – and to respond, you will have to appear online to them.
As for seeing who has you on their list – that feature is not available in WLM directly now. You may be able to use a third party program like Plus! to do it but with the rich features of WLM these days, I don’t bother with third party applications running alongside WLM anymore. You’d have to look at their feature list to see.
The newer thinking is that anyone who is on your contact list is likely a friend. If they are not – well, you have to delete them. Your privacy of what they can and can’t see is controlled from the online options. Be careful if you have other sites like Facebook, etc. joined with your WLM. You need to carefully review what others can see and make sure it’s what you want.
Doris KenneyParticipantIn the latest version of WLM, any of those things you mention – when you click them should open a browser window and ask you to log into your Live ID account.
Profile always did that, but now you can’t just change your name to anything random. It will only show what is in your profile. Also, your privacy settings are all in your profile as well, they are not determined in WLM directly.
I haven’t heard of this problem before, so it could be a setting somewhere on your machine or perhaps in your antivirus that is blocking the browser window from opening when you click the link. But the way around it would be to go to login.live.com and make the changes from there.
As for messages being too short to post here – we are aware of that problem and we are trying to get it fixed. I’m glad you were able to work around it!
Doris KenneyParticipantIs this something that was working and now isn’t? Or have you never been able to click on these?
You might try running WLM by right-clicking the icon on the desktop and choosing Run as Administrator instead of just launching it by double clicking the icon.
Doris KenneyParticipantMore than likely it has nothing to do with your computer. If you can video call with others with no issue – the chances are it’s on the other end.
It could be that your contact is signing in via a web messenger, or a multi-client program like Trillian. In those cases, video will not be supported.
It could also be that the cam is not connecting properly on the contact’s end. I would suggest since it sounds like an external cam, to disconnect it, reboot the computer and then reconnect it. The contact should make sure it is set up properly in WLM and then try the call again. They may also need to update drivers for the webcam from the manufacturer’s website or through Windows update.
And finally, if it was working and suddenly stops, there is always the chance it’s just a server glitch and will resolve on it’s own.
Good luck!
Doris KenneyParticipantDownload Helper is a Firefox add-on that will let you download and save You Tube videos (for replay on the computer). (I should also mention that technically saving any You Tube video is a violation of their TOS.)
You could then use something like Quick Media Converterto save it in a format that would likely play on an iPod. I think .mov files are supported and QuickTime is one of the conversion choices.
I also saw they have a new Quick Youtube Converter that’s available for download as a beta test product. There didn’t seem to be any info about it or it’s capabilities. As with any beta product it may be glitchy so just know that ahead of time.
Doris KenneyParticipantI’m trying to decide just how much of that sandwich he managed to eat in 1 bite 😀

January 29, 2011 at 11:57 pm in reply to: What is the safe way to stay with WLM 2009 (no upgrade to 2011 version)? #177264Doris KenneyParticipantIt’s probably a security update to 2009. WLM 2011 won’t even install and run on an XP system – so you don’t have anything to worry about if you are on XP. WLM 2011 requires Vista or Windows 7.
I’m guessing this is a forced update to 2009 to address a security vulnerability and if it won’t let you log in without it then you should apply it.

Doris KenneyParticipantRight click on the WLM icon on your desktop and choose the Shortcut tab. In the Run section, make sure Normal Window is selected and that it is not set to Minimized.
Doris KenneyParticipantI have a case with an integrated BT keyboard. It’s slightly easier than the touch screen when you have a lot to type. You can get them for around $75.
