So the big news lately is that Microsoft and Yahoo! have linked their IM networks together to offer true server-side interoperability! We’re very excited about this, as we’ve always been big supporters of interoperability in any form. We believe that the end user should ultimately select his or her favorite client and not have to worry about who is chatting where, and this is a great step in that direction. Congratulations to the Windows Live and Yahoo! teams for taking a very encouraging first step.
We are working on ensuring that Trillian users can take advantage of this new functionality ASAP; it will involve upgrading Trillian to speak a newer version of both the Y! and MSN protocols, which is not a minor undertaking by any means, but we’re looking forward to the challenge. Back to work…
ScottJSmithMemberMore or less, but since it doesn’t support Yahoo right now, I have since switched to Easy Message. Sure, it doesn’t have too many (any) advanced features, but it takes up such an insignificant amount of resources and easily interacts with all IM’s, I’m happy with it for now.
ScottJSmithMemberYeah. Odigo reports the URL you are viewing back to Odigo, and anyone on the same page or site will see your name in their “Radar” module.
There’s also a neat tool hidden in the Odigo folder on your hard drive: “SiteWatcher” (or something like that). If you own a site (or just want to see stats on a particular site), enter the URL into SiteWatcher, and it will tell you how many Odigo viewers are there right now.
ScottJSmithMemberTech Support says they currently don’t support Yahoo!, but will in the future.
Based on how long it took 4.0 to come out, I’ll look for other means.
Found an unbelievable 200KB (Yes, that’s 0.2 mB) file called EasyMessage (http://www.easymessage.net) that is a super universal IM.
OK. It doesn’t have ANY bells and whistles, but has pop-up notifications for all IM’s and POP mail, sounds, and simple contact management.
It is the bare-bones, but works better than any other universal IM I’ve come across (I personally don’t need all the gee-whiz geek stuff. EasyMessage suits me just fine).
ScottJSmithMember🙁 STEE-RIKE ONE!
First off, it only connects to AOL right now. It has options in the preferences for MSN and ICQ, but NOT Yahoo!
Since I had a Yahoo! account on it a year ago, my IM Preferences still showed that account in the list, but would not let me update it.
Currently, there are no streaming ads, but then again, Odigo may just be dormant, since there have been no posts on this or other boards.
I’ll let you know what ‘Tech Support’ says.
(Also doesn’t seem to have the “Rename” feature in the Contact List. Looks like I’ll have to remove and readd all my contacts to get the names to appear the way I want.)
ScottJSmithMemberDoes anybody know what features Odigo will be adding in V4?
I’d love for a Universal IM (Odigo, Trillian, somebody) be able to get into the voice and webcam interoperability!
ScottJSmithMemberI’ll give it a shot. Thanks.
ScottJSmithMemberKinda figured as much. I guess that (and web-cam-ability) will be the next big step for IM interoperability. I guess it takes a lot of convincing for the developers to “LET IT GO!”…they’d get many more users if they didn’t try to keep a stranglehold on the market share.
Imagine if Nokia phone owners could only call other Nokia phones? The Norwegian telecommunications company would have gone belly up before they got off the ground. The idea is, agree on a standard, and there is more that enough market share for EVERYONE.
I do prefer Odigo, though, for the interoperability. Sure beats having multiple icons in my system tray, sucking all those resources. One problem with NetDetect, but I’ll make a new post for that.
But I thought of another interoperability question: Can I open an Odigo (or Trillian) Chat Room and invite AIM and MSN buddies? I’m guessing I’m pretty much out of luck here, too…DAMN, DIRTY AIM!
