Does leaving yourself logged in to any of the messaging systems(aol, msn, icq, etc) pose a bigger security threat than logging off every time you are finished?
No more than when you’re sitting at it – true.
But now it’s time to ask yourself the following question:– Is ‘being logged on to a chat server’ a security risk?
If you are afraid of “hackers”, don’t worry. It will not matter if you are logged on or off for them. AFAIK, most “hackers” do not “hack” random users, found online at a messaging system.
If you really think a “hacker” is targetting you, you might just want to install a good firewall, such as the Personal Firewall, from Kerio, and disallow as many connections as possible (= not more than you really need).

There are a lot animals which have skills that humans (we) most likely will not have within the next 50 years. We can learn a lot from some animals. 🙂
DJHyperbyteMemberWhenever you send someone a message, or whenever you sign on, MSN Messenger should play a sound at the other end, unless the MSN Messenger sounds are disabled there.
Other than that, no.
DJHyperbyteMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by JeffThat sucks! That list is stored by MSN on their servers. I’m not entirely sure why that alone would cause MSN to connect so slowly though.
Have you considered contacting [email protected] and asking if they can help pare down the bogus entries?
It sucks indeed, but I know how it’s done now (and I can do it myself too now – payback time). It appears that all the accounts are indeed registered, just not confirmed. :/

DJHyperbyteMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by MacLaren2I tried to download oleaut32.dll from the links posted above…but they were dead links…and which version should I get? Presumably the one with the most current date?
Thanks…
No, do NOT just get the newest one.
You need one that is compatible with your version of Windows. Post your version (and service packs please) of Windows that you’re running now, and the version of OLEAUT32.DLL you have now, and I’ll have a look around for you, ok? 🙂
DJHyperbyteMemberHehe, it’s an ircII script running under TekNap (the BitchX for napster – was too lazy to port it over).

So if Hoenzbroek wants to use MSN at work he’ll have to hack the company’s firewallThat is not true. Hoenzbroek has a few chances of bypassing his company’s firewall (which is, I believe, a proxy server).
1. Take a look at your Internet Explorer settings. Under the tab ‘Connections’, there is a subwindow ‘LAN Settings’. There is a good chance that the use of a proxy server is enabled there (if not, try step 2). Note down this ‘Address’ and ‘Port’, and go to the MSN Messenger personal settings. Click on the ‘Connection’ tab, and tell MSN you use a proxy, of type HTTP-proxy. The ‘Server’ and ‘Port’ are equivalent to the ‘Address’ and ‘Port’ you have just noted down.
2. Try running MSN via a HTTP-tunnel (http://www.http-tunnel.com). Install (and configure – Make 100% sure that the test does NOT fail!!) the software, and then go to the MSN Personal settings. Over there, tell MSN you use a proxy server, of type SOCKSv4 on server “localhost” on port “1080”.
DJHyperbyteMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by hardxcorexpunkEvery time I try to download something, Kazaa downloads between 300 kb – 1000 kb of it and then disconnects my internet and the download. I have dial-up (barf), and it works fine with IE and my e-mail, but Kazaa screws it up. I downloaded the lite version, I disabled the XP firewall, and I set the port to 7000, but the problem persists. Help!
AFAIK, the following happens:
KaZaA is trying to send/recieve at a higher rate than your connection can handle, so your connection reaches it’s ‘bottleneck’ after a short while, and then disconnects.
You should be able to solve this by going to your modem settings. There is a setting there called ‘Maximum speed (bytes per second)’. If you have a 56k modem, set this value to 57600. This way Windows should limit your speed to 5.6 kilobyte/sec, and prevent disconnects like this.
DJHyperbyteMemberThe error “The MSNMSGR.EXE file is linked to missing export OLEAUT32.DLL-314.” occurs most likely for the following reason:
The MSN Messenger setup program installs a few DLL files, if proper versions are not already on your system. The error occurs because, during the setup process, MSN needs to replace a DLL file, which requires a version of OLEAUT32.DLL that is newer than what comes with your Windows version. Unfortunately, the old OLEAUT32.DLL is always locked and thus can only be replaced after your system is restarted. Replace the OLEAUT32.DLL by a newer one manually.
