Update to the latest build (0812) of WLM8 and see whether that helps. If that doesn’t, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 and run it before attempting to install WLM again.
PhilipModeratorHi, upgrade to the latest version of WLM8 (build 0812) and see whether that helps.
Also, please see my post at https://bigblueball.com/forums/windows-live-messenger/37628-those-you-experiencing-error-1603-problems.html and give it a try.August 30, 2006 at 5:38 am in reply to: No Sound in my System after reinstallation of windows..plzz Help me Out #151417PhilipModeratorArthur:
Could you please post your system specs and I’ll try to help you out. Please tell me whether you have an integrated soundcard or a PCI one.Philip
PhilipModeratorI’m using BitDefender 9 Pro Plus. Has a firewall, anti-spam, anti-virus (which automatically updates several times a day!) It doesn’t consume a lot of system resources, and there is no interference with WLM8.
PhilipModeratorHi Roberto:
Zone Alarm (or ZA) used to be a top-notch firewall, with a lot of users. However, in my opinion, ZA has become more and more buggy and bloated with each new version. I’ve used it in the past but have now switched to another firewall. If you look at the other threads here in Big Blue, you’ll see that one of the most annoying problems ZA causes is the disappearing emoticons/display pictures problem. I suffered from that, too. After completely uninstalling ZA from my computer, that problem vanished.
There are a lot of users out there who are still sticking to ZA and hoping that they will come out with a fix (don’t hold your breath). I’m not one of them. I am enjoying my computing more, now that ZA has been uninstalled from my computer.

PhilipModeratorThanks for the link, Asjaliv. The patch works fine, and adds a touch of nostalgia to the good old days of MSN 7.5 🙂
July 1, 2006 at 3:09 am in reply to: Display pics and emoticons problems? Zone alarm may be the problem. #147290PhilipModeratorFor all you guys out there suffering from mysterious disappearing display pics and emoticons:
Zone Alarm 6.5.XXX is the culprit behind it. Please check out the other threads in the forum which will give you solutions to this.My two cent’s worth of advice is this: uninstall ZA completely, and use another security suite. With every increasing version ZA is unfortunately becoming more buggy and bloated. Just take a look at their forums http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs
I’m now much happier without Zone Alarm in my system. 🙂
Philip
PhilipModeratorNo problem. Glad that I could help out.
Philip
PhilipModeratorHi,
Did you uncheck the Load Zone Alarm at startup option in ZA?The more drastic solution would be to uninstall ZA 6.5.XXX completely and downgrade to 6.1.XXX. That seems to have fixed the display pic problem for some users.
Let me know how you get along.
Philip
PhilipModeratorHi,
Are you by any chance running Zone Alarm 6.5.XXX on your system? If so, please see this thread https://bigblueball.com/forums/display-pics-smileys-skins/20400-display-picture-problem.html for some possible solutions.Cheers,
PhilipPhilipModeratorShannon:
Glad to know that you’ve solved the problem. It would be good if the folks at Zone Alarm could come up with a fix fast.Philip
PhilipModeratorShannon,
Please check out this thread https://bigblueball.com/forums/display-pics-smileys-skins/20400-display-picture-problem.html which hopefully will be of help to you.Regards,
PhilipPhilipModeratorHi Lisa,
Beats me  . I’ve been using ZA for a long time and there never was a problem like this. Could be some bugs in their program code (?)Did you try the method I mentioned in the other thread https://bigblueball.com/forums/display-pics-smileys-skins/20400-display-picture-problem.html Please let me know whether it works for you.
Have a good day.
PhilipPhilipModeratorAsthenia, I assume you mean Zone Alarm. What I’m doing presently is this: I don’t allow ZA to load up during Windows startup (but Messenger is allowed). Once I’m signed in on MSN, I check to make sure I can see all my display pictures. Only then do I turn ZA on. Done this way, ZA doesn’t seem to wipe out my display pics.
Please post back if the above method still doesn’t work on your system.
Philip
PhilipModeratorLisa, are you by any chance running Zone Alarm Firewall version 6.5.xxx? Please see the thread mentioned by PrinceG where I had the same problem as you and discovered that Zone Alarm was the culprit.
Regards,
