I’m not able to help you on this one, but am sure one of our techie guys will have an opinion. And also wanted to say, welcome back – and hope we can get this thing solved for you. That’s got to be so frustrating! 😡 Keep checking back . . . and if you find something that works for you in the meantime, please let us know. That’s one of the best ways to learn!Yeah, it really is annoying. So far it seems to be with just one contact. She is in Canada and I am in England. It just went away before, I hope it is not going to recur. There is no chance of getting any help from msn. If I try, all I get is irrelevant suggestions from what appears to be a bot.

ParticipantAaaargh! It’s happening again, is anybody else having this problem?

ParticipantprinceG wrote:Actually alanyork the solution in that thread is about Windows Live Messenger, trust me. Follow the solution, Evilseph knows what he’s talking about. Thanks but that seems to deal with sounds completely missing. Mine work sometimes and not others. For example a friend signed in tonight, it made no sound when she came online or for her first message, but then everything was fine.
I have scanned the thread and it really does seem to apply to people who lost sound from MSN Messenger 7.5 unless I am misreading it.
I got a reply from MSN…the sum total of their expertise was….”Alan, in order to receive alerts when contacts come online, you receive a message etc. you have to turn the alerts on”….. Brilliant! A masterstroke! Why didn’t I think of that?! Please excuse my sarcasm. I may not be a techie but even I can work out the sounds have to be turned on!
So I’m lost really, only I seem to be reporting these problems. Could you maybe spell it out in laymans terms what I need to do to fix it or what you think the problem is? As I said, I’m not a techie but if it’s clearly laid out I can follow instructions to correct whatever is wrong.

ParticipantThanks but that posting seems to apply to the old MSN Messenger V 7.5 and the problem I am having is with Windows Live Messenger.
If it’s any help I uninstalled the first Non Beta build of Windows Live Messenger and reinstalled it. That didn’t solve the problem. Since then I have installed the second Non Beta version 8.0.0792.00. At no point did I uninstall the Windows Live Sign In Assistant.
When I come to look in my program files I see a file called MSN Messenger and two other files called MSN Messenger (2) and MSN Messenger (3). Both (2) and (3) appear to contain sound files but WLM appears to get its sounds from the first file ie MSN Messenger. Certainly that appears to be the case when I checked in Tools.
Also the problem appears to be intermittent, with no pattern to it. It may or may not be relevant but Offline Messages sometimes bounce too. All in all it’s nowhere near as reliable as MSN Messenger V 7.5.
I should say that PC is spyware and virus free and other programs and internet browsing work fine.
I’ve given as much information as I can, I hope you guys can help me out.

ParticipantI now can not send any offline messages at all. It’s always been problematic for me but now it’s just gone down completely. Is this because of today’s problems do you think? Is there anything at all I can do about this Offline Message problem? Nobody seems able to help me with this.
Alanyork
ParticipantWell it sorted itself out for a while, but it’s back to the way it was now and I’m AGAIN having trouble sending offline messages. Only about 50% of them go, and I thought it was coming out of the Beta version tomorrow.
Is there nothing that I can do to improve matters?
Alanyork
ParticipantI put WLM back on, it’s just frustrating when you have to log off the internet and log back on again in order to finish what you are saying. I’d rather wait and have something that works properly than have something that is half baked. I can usually send about 6 short paragraphs and then it’s “message can not be delivered to all recipients”. It’s driving me up the wall…..!!!!
As for losing sound from the old version if you go back to it…that’s just ridiculous and typical of MSN. I could understand if I had got WLM from another site, but I got mine from MSN’s site!
Thanks anyway.

ParticipantI can’t get on either, just says temporarily unavailable but the service status says it is normal. I’ve had that problem with showing as offline when I’m not before. It seems to have resolved itself, if it’s gonna come back now, I don’t know.
I think MSN need to get this sorted out, these things are happening more and more now, they would do better to fix the Messenger they have already before they go on to “improve” stuff.

ParticipantLooks like MSN have replaced profiles with “spaces” and its become a real mess. I don’t know whether you have any experience of MSN Groups but I belong to a couple. When you go to the message boards you normally see a little yellow smiley icon with sunshades:cool: , click on it and you get a brief profile of the poster. Now half the pictures just aren’t there, you get the dreaded empty box with a little red cross in it. I wonder if any of you guys are in MSN groups too and have found the same thing.
I despair of MSN. Earlier this year and late last year it was people appearing offline when they weren’t, they seem to have fixed that and now they “improve” things by messing around with profiles. Some improvement this is! What the heck are they going to mess up next?

ParticipantFair point there Martin, but what’s needed is a permanent solution. I think at the moment my messenger is working ok but if folks can’t see each other it makes the messenger system pretty much useless. If enough people are having these problems then they can get together and point it out to Microsoft.
I think that if one or two people report it, then MSN will take no notice. If a whole group do at the same time, then something is more likely to be done about it. It’s all well and good saying “hey it’s just affecting a few people”, but if you’re one of the unlucky few it can cause massive inconvenience or worse, especially if you have family and friends abroad like myself. For messenger to be permanently malfunctioning for a minority of people is unfair and unacceptable when a user has paid for the right to use Windows facilities when using their computer at the time of purchase.
Again I urge all those who are having these problems to insist on Microsoft fixing it (politely of course) and post back any replies and updates here as Martin suggested. As I said, they can’t fix it if they don’t know about it!!!

ParticipantI’m pretty sure it’s a server issue with msn. It seemed to resolve itself last month when it occured for the first time, or rather msn must have sorted it out. I had exactly the same problem and it really is absolutely maddening. So far since early December none of my contacts have said that I appear offline even when I’m not, but then again I haven’t asked them about my status as they see it.
I strongly recommend that you e mail msn about it using their help & “contact us” web page. They can’t fix it if they don’t know about it. Please let us all know if you’re still having the problem and what msn say.
Alanyork
ParticipantAs you’ll see from my earlier thread you’re not alone with this problem….My reply about this from msn was useless. I’ve emailed them again and insisted they look at it but so far no reply.
Also I think it would be a good idea if you emailed msn about it via their help page as I can’t really see them fixing it unless they know about it and enough people complain about it.
I’ve checked on other forums and there do seem to be others having the same problem and as faults go, it’s a pretty major one. If folks cant see you, how can they talk to you, they might even think you’ve blocked them!
I have to work these next 3 nights so wont be able to check but if anyone has any idea as to how to proceed with this or finds its fixed, maybe they could post or PM me. Messenger is important to me as friends and family are abroad and I really need it to work right.
Kindest regards

ParticipantNo I have no add ons at all. I got a reply from msn…talk about useless!!! They said it might be because I have more than 1,200 contacts…yeah, right!
Their other more sensible suggestions included getting my contacts to log back in again..that didn’t help.
That…. privacy settings allow only your My Allow List contacts to see your Online status and to send you instant messages. But how can that be relevant? the people I want to talk to are already ON my allow list!!
What to do if I receive an “Add contact notice”…..eh?! The whole point is that its my existing contacts that cant see me, what have additional contacts got to do with it???
They then asked me to answer the following questions…but there weren’t any!!!
I despair….would a reload of windows help or am I lumbered with it? I thought this was only happening on msn mesenger but its happening on Windows messenger too now.
