i run squid on my linux server i used to run tor and privoxy on my linux server but the last time i did that tor just kept dieing maybe you’ll have better luck and if you use tor let me know i’ll give you instrucions on how to set it up for access ffrom any computer also there is a windows version that installs on you local machine that bypasses any firewall problem that may block proxies hence your not connecting through the corporate firewall to the proxy your just sending encrypted data out to some ip address so they’s have to block ips not domains and they’d have to find the iip of the tor router to block it lol
i highly reccomend the use of tor and privoxy google it or
i run a debian server here at the house the major problem is getting a gui up (aka x server) it’s video card issue lolso you would want (k)ubuntu they are a debian distros with gui made easier to deal with the nice thing about them is that i can run 1 command in a command console and it downloads, extracts, installs, and sets up basic config for each program you install and you can install several programs with that 1 command
well the netbios info that makes my network places work is at a broad cast level only to guarantee it to always show you need something called a wins server other wise it’s based on whether the information that is broadcasted is seen by that comp so run all the computers at once open my network places on them at roughly the same time (it helps to run the networking wizard) andd then come bac in an hour
also running a linux server with samba can cause some prblems in this regard as welli run pc-cillin interenet security haven’t had any problems with it at all and yes i’d reccomend it to others check out Welcome to Whitacre Family Computers
i have my reviews on various programs there mainly anit-virus programs atm.i use 1and1 their home package is 5 something a month for more than you can need stuff and you can host other domain names but if it’s a 1and1 domain name then you must own it other wise it don’t matter
make sure your not running an avg scan when the spike occurs i’ve known avg to lag the whole system on a scan and yes it registers as the other programs atleast on the 6 computers i run it on
just get a u3 drive and go download software from U3 brings the power of portable software to your USB flash drive – make it a smart drive!
