It’s quite amazing that they would waste, yes waste, time on a new version when they can’t control the environment as it stands today. It really doesn’t say much for tech knowledge of the team. They waste all this time on a new version knowing that 75% of the ID’s are fake porn bots. So all this time and energy serves little purpose, other than the bots. Kinda like putting a new set of tires on a car that doesn’t have an engine. Go figure….

Yahoo! yesterday released a new build of it’s 9.0 Beta of Yahoo Messenger.
Download Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.0.1389 Here
This version includes a few new features along with bug fixes, stability and speed improvements, plus some changes to the contact list. Here’s a quick look at what’s new:
Bigger emoticons
They’re not massive, but a little bit bigger so you can express yourself with more oomph.
( vs. ). We also enabled a few more for use in your status message.Games are back!
We know you missed them in the earlier releases of 9.0, but games are now back! Click the new “Activities” button while you IM to choose a game to play with a friend (or for a plug-in). Checkers, pool, toki toki boom…you know the rest. Note that your friend needs to be on 8.1 or this latest release of 9.0 Beta to play games with you.Status message improvements
The status message menu has been split into two parts – one where you can indicate your availability (busy, available) and the other for putting in a custom message or a link you want to share. That way even if you’re away from IM, you can still share a funny thought, webpage or video with your friends via your status message.Yahoo! Updates
Yahoo! Messenger is one of the first products to showcase what your friends are doing on Yahoo!. When a friendbuzzes a favourite news story or changes their Avatar, a Yahoo! Update is displayed next to that friend in your contact list (with more detail in their contact card). So even if you’re not actively communicating with them, you can still stay up to date with what they’re doing. To manage what Updates you broadcast, click on your display image in the contact list, then click the “Manage my updates” link. We’ll add more types of updates in the future.New contact list format button
When we first launched 9.0 Beta, a lot of users weren’t crazy about the extra space in the contact list we created for display images and status messages. So we made two views available for your contact list – detailed or compact. In this latest version, we added a button next to the contact search bar to change it, along with other settings like “Show Offline Contacts”.Import Contacts – new & improved
Select “Import Contacts” from the Contacts menu and you can add friends from address books you have on other sites like Gmail, Orkut, Yahoo! Address Book, Hotmail, AOL and many more. We’ll pull in your contacts and make it easy for you to start talking with them on Yahoo! Messenger.Voice in chat rooms for Vista users & faster Captcha process
We know our Windows Vista users have been waiting a really long time for this. We added a fix to this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta that allows Windows Vista users on 9.0 to use voice in chat rooms (and conferences). We also changed the chat room verification process. You can now enter the Captcha code right in the chat room window instead of having to go off to another page.New IM notification toast
If your IM conversation window falls into the background, this new feature will make sure you don’t miss out on the latest message from your friend. When a new message comes in to the background window, a small notification will pop up from the lower right corner of your screen with the beginning text of the IM your friend just sent. (You can turn this off under Messenger > Preferences > Alerts & Sounds.)We’ve also welcomed some new countries to Yahoo! Messenger with this latest release. If you’re in Columbia,Chile, Peru or Venezuela, we now have versions of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 in your local language.

Tell me you’re not serious. Are they really working on beta version instead of focusing on the problem of bot infestation? Where are their priorities?
jimmy12345MemberI hear ya but it still doesnt make much sense. If these clients are so much better why doesn’t yahoo just use them themself? Why would Yahoo continue to spend time on updated versions of an inferior program.
I’m not sure how they make money off of chat. If it’s from selling advertising space I sure wouldn’t want to be the one paying, knowing the percentage of numbers being bots.
I’ve tried a client to use. it will block the porn bots but doesnt alleviate the problem of not being able to get in a room because its full…mostly from bots taking up slots. Today for instance, it took 15 attempts to get in a room, captcha every time, denied, captcha again, denied, then finally in, only to see a roomfull of bots.
jimmy12345MemberThats just not true. I just left a room with 43 supposed users. 36 were porn bots. I can understand your wanting to stick up for certain folks, but the truth is the bots are back in full force.

The captcha in chat is not one of a permanent nature and more like a temp condition for yahoo to decrease the bot flow in chatrooms, and by all means they have done so.
See, attitudes like this is part of the problem. Bugs are to be dealt with, I can deal with that. But, to sit back, and simply accept that pornography bots is acceptable, well that’s just not proper. I’ve said this once before, but it fell on deaf ears. There are two ways to fix it. One is to start charging a nominal fee and make it subscription based. The other is set it up to let users “self-police” the rooms. X amount of ignores to the porn bots should disable the name. This has been proven to work in other sites.
jimmy12345MemberPlease advise on how to block spam. The ignore feature is useless when bots are entering with new names daily, faster than the ignore feature. I have yet to see any way to effectively block spam.
As far as the bots. the situation is just as bad as it was before captcha. A simple room count will validate this.
jimmy12345MemberI take it back. It’s more to the 90% level. Just left a room that was 43 bots out of 47. It’s a real joke these days. Just as bad as it ever was…lol.
jimmy12345MemberVery interesting read. It just goes to show how much control Yahoo has over whats happening. Probably some 12 year old computer wiz breaking all the codes. Maybe Yahoo needs to hire the folks that keep running circles around them and fire the so-called programmers they currently have. One would think security and the bot problems would be on the top of the list. But I guess another beta version is more important…ridiculous.
jimmy12345MemberI’d have to say the bots make up pretty close to 75%.
jimmy12345MemberThere have been alot of legitimate programs around for years that will do that. Nothing to get excited about….other than that trojan someones talking about. If you guys are still trolling the net downloading bogus programs you deserve what you get!
Quite frankly, I don’t know why anyone would even consider Yahoo Messenger with all the bugs it has. There are other programs that will turn circles around Messenger.
Instead of screwing around with a useless beta version they should be doing something about the bot problem. I just left a room and the bots were winning…score was bots 37 – real people 3. Folks need another Messenger version like they need a hole in the head.
jimmy12345MemberYou would think that with the bot problem still not resolved that folks would have their priorities in order. Nope! Spending time on an uneeded beta version instead of spending the time reworking the batched bot fix. Go figure….
jimmy12345Memberjust checked out a Nevada room………43 bots….4 real people..,…come on yahoo….lets the chatters police these for you…..is it that hard thswallow thethe truth….WE NEED A WAY TO POLICE THESE ROOMS OURSELVES
jimmy12345MemberClean your cache.
jimmy12345MemberJust let the update run on its own. You really don’t have to worry about it unless you firewall isn’t configured to allow updates.
September 25, 2007 at 7:51 am in reply to: Want to install mutiple versions of Yahoo Messenger #164342jimmy12345MemberIf you just want to use it for messenger just use the web version. You can log in a hundred different names if you want.
September 6, 2007 at 12:08 am in reply to: I’m assuming Yahoo Chat folks are reading these posts? #163727jimmy12345MemberI agree and that’s where Yahoo has been screwing up for years. I just shake my head when I try to imagine those in management positions at Yahoo. What management fails to realize is, what drives paid sales is free teaser programs. When folks see that they can’t get a simple chat program to work correctly, they see Yahoo groups constantly having issues, Email servers bogged down, etc, it makes most shy away from the paid services. And rightfully so. If Yahoo can’t keep the basics functioning why should I risk my hard earned money on a paid service.
As far as only 5 programmers working the chat program. Pure BS. It doesn’t take 5 programmers to keep it running. What exactly would 5 people be doing on 1 program? That is crazy! Better to have 2 people that know what they’re doing than 5. It’s obvious that having 5 isn’t working to well. Yahoo….wake up and smell the coffee. Time for a simple personnel change by management. But management has to be awake to see this.
It’s simple Marketing 101 that the Yahoo folks slept through class.
@Netti 222611 wrote:
Exactly Mfenech… Which is WHY there are only 5 programmers working on yahoo messenger… No revenue.
Due to the law suits brought upon yahoo, many advertisers have pulled out, not wanting their name associated with “child endangerment”.
And Yahoo chat is BOTH a program AND a service. Both of which are free to all users. Of course I would never accept this type of service from my cable company which I pay a lot of money to.
I’m not disagreeing with what anyone is saying at all… But the simple fact is, that yahoo will put more time, energy and resources into their PAID email accounts, their PAID internet service and their PAID web sites, then they will for some of their free services. I don’t agree with it, but thats what happens.
I’m actually amazed that yahoo did work on messenger at all. And am really impressed that we’re getting regular updates from their blog. So maybe their on their way to a change.
