Nice one, Martin!
I’d never heard of this one.
I find now that that soft32.com link seems a little outdated? – HERE is direct link to the author.I’ve now tried it – 990k seems a bit large, but no matter! For the basic 5 statuses it works just fine.. AND it’s got a neat scheme where you can create other SETS of 5, and switch sets whenever you wish! (Clever, but maybe a bit cumbersome, unless you REALLY want access to 10 or 15!?).
Anyway, this subject seems fragmented, popping up in different threads around these forums, so here are links I’ve found to other references:
Yahoo Status (2003, only a few comments)
YM FAQ (refer Question 4 – suggests “Messy Stuff”)
YM Status deletion – (lots of useful info!)Eagle_KiwiMember(Equally sorry for being off-topic!)
Maybe twice a year at most, Marl! (And I’m a heavy, daily, user π )
I’ve used it basically troublefree for 3 or 4 years, first on W98 and now on XP.
But that’s just MY experience, FWIW.Eagle_KiwiMemberTYVM Marl.
Remedied! :blush:Eagle_KiwiMemberHey there Tiger – this doesn’t help Topramen, but I must disagree about Yahoo mail and third-party access.
I have Outlook Express, and I admit I can’t (or don’t know how to) set that to access my Yahoo mail.
HOWEVER, I also use (and HIGHLY recommend!) PopPeeper, and with that I sure CAN access/read my Yahoo mail.
I just tried reading then FORWARDING some… couldn’t quite see an option, but at LEAST I can REPLY to that mail in my Yahoo FROM PopPeeper – the whole thing without my (directly) going anywhere near Yahoo as such.If PopPeeper can do it, then I reckon surely many other 3rd-parties can… perhaps just not Outlook ?
(I’m sure others here will confirm/deny/add to this info).Eagle_KiwiMemberHi there CC. π And welcome to BBB.
Firstly, THANK YOU for reporting back, so as to prevent millions of us all spending countless hours researching your problem – needlessly π
But also, are you aware of the setting for IE6 under Internet Options, Advanced, “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts” ? I’m not sure, but this might help you sometime.
(Personally I prefer SlimBrowser – all the good points of I.E. plus many others, including “Tabbed” browsing, and ability to handle “new/same window” distinction as YOU want it!)
Eagle_KiwiMemberHey there,
As a satisfied constant user, I assure you Yahoo Voice does NOT suck !
But, indeed it can sometimes take a little tweaking – and/or a lot of reading/asking, to get it set up properly.
(And I concede.. Yahoo HELP ranges from Not Much Use to near non-existent, esp. for the YM-& Beta) πI’d suggest firstly you look at Preferences, Connection – and check yours is set to No Proxies. I think having some OTHER setting in here is the only reason I know for Yahoo not to even offer you any voice controls.
Let’s know how you fare….
Eagle_KiwiMemberThat SiteReportCard is a marvellous place! (Adds to Favs ;))
Anyway, my (cheap!) broadband gives me 256k for about a week each month, then cuts back to 56k for remainder – and I AM finding BBB quite “difficult” to use, timewise.
So, mainly for my interest (but I guess others’ too!?) I’ve done my own little chart here, including 2 other forums I use occasionally. These are all Main Forum Index only, and Jeff, I take your point about worst-case scenario, as this ignores benefits of caching.
(All decimal results rounded to nearest full unit.)
URL…..PageSize…Objects…HTMsize…Images….Rating…D/L@56k……*!BBB
………….165k………140……..79k……..86k……..1/10………27sec……..*29*
WackyB
………….106k………48……..49k………57k………5/10……..17sec……..*17*
SWI
……………99k……..69……..70k………29k……….5/10……..16sec……..*18*
FreedomList
…………..34k………43……..27k……….8k……….9/10………6sec……..*11*Having visually compared those 4 pages, it occured to me that maybe despite graphics, adverts, extra li’l bits (or lack of) – perhaps the MAIN factor is simply the forum’s particular hierarchy structure.
So I added an extra column (*!) at the end, simply showing the number of individual forums shown on the “Main Forum Index” page.
It happens to show a REMARKABLE correlation with the penultimate column. But also I guess with most other columns too – simply, the obvious: The bigger the page, the longer it takes!Eagle_KiwiMemberNo help to Fdny or Holi, but this might be useful here anyway…..
I find THIS page handy – when I want to check someone’s Yahoo profile (or even their Games History, which itself contains a link direct to their main profile) I just enter their Y! ID in the box provided.
It can save having to piece things together or copy/paste as Jeff described above. π
Eagle_KiwiMemberHi PK.
Cross purposes !In YM6 the two voice functions (neither of which YOU could access) were virtually identical – one in the IM window, for just 2 people, the other in the (Voice) Conference window, for more than two.
In YM7 the Voice Conference (or “Voice Chat”) that you describe remains the same, but….
On the IM side, the voice part is now known as CALL – which lets you either talk direct, OR if friend doesn’t answer, to leave a Voice Message, a.k.a. VoiceMail (hence my abbreviating to VM).
Eagle_KiwiMemberStill very early days, but even now I’m convinced this YM-7 is not “catching up” with MSN and AIM – it’s a quantum leap out in front !
Forget Trillian, that brings together the Big 4!
YM itself now consolidates/replaces:- Skype – for cheap worldwide PC-to-Phone
- Vimas/TalkSender – to send (free) voice messages to offline friends.
- blogger.com – your online public diary
- Address book (email and phone) – I keep mine all in Yahoo now!
- Personal online photo album – with ability to easily share.
- Search engine – easy access from almost anywhere.
- and much more….
I’ve now used all the above features, and over the moon with the whole package!
Eagle_KiwiMemberPerhaps my “problem” is more general – would that PLUS thing also make ALL my links in MSN to go via my default browser, instead of via I.E. ?
e.g. “View Profile”, “My Space”, and even URLs entered into text chat.
(OR … is there any other way to achieve this ? Until/unless I get some way to make MSN “behave”, I would never dream of seriously using it. π‘ )
Eagle_KiwiMemberI’ve used SlimBrowser for some years – having tried/disliked Avant, Neoplanet, MYIE, Opera, IE, Netscape etc.
When Firefox came out I was PREPARED to switch, so tried it for a few days, but then chose to settle back to Slim.
Of course they ALL have little points I like, AND others I dislike too.Perhaps my main “likes” about Slim are:
- Ability to really pack NEEDED stuff into top line or two (it is just like I.E. here – but I think ALL the others seem to force wasted real estate).
- Use of centre mouse button for “Open in New Tab”.
- Auto-Login, where I can preload my answers to a form, then access it with one click (excellent for ID/password commonly used sites).
- Recently Closed Sites – self-explanatory, but perhaps easier than many normal “History” displays.
Eagle_KiwiMemberHi all.
I’ve searched FAQs, and searched this forum, finding heaps of BASIC queries about View Contacts By, but mine is different! (sorry if I’ve missed a post.. BBB is taking around 30sec to load each page, on my dialup speed, and I haven’t got all day). Are there ONLY the 2 options available ?
This is #1 of my 50 item “MSN Bugbears” list – it is the ONLY IM prog I know where *I* cannot control how *I* see friends’ names. (Well, AIM is not perfect, but there’s a workaround for that). It seems that EITHER I choose email address, which of course means nothing to me for most of my friends…. OR I choose Display Name – but gee, maybe I have some JERKS on my list, but many or most are unrecognisable to me!
e.g. I have a friend Jenny. I also know her as Foxy_Lady some places. But for some reason she may choose display name on MSN today to be “May God Bless My New Job!” (WITH perhaps assorted hearts, rainbows, gumboots, and I dunno WHAT all silly smilies!) And that’s all *I* see. πI have a LOT of people on all my IM lists… but with YM, ICQ, PalTalk, etc at least *I* can override whatever THEY choose to use, so I could ensure that (e.g.) this friend always shows TO ME as “Jenny/Foxy-AZ,USA“.
Have I missed something here ? Do I malign MSN unjustly ?
Eagle_KiwiMemberThanks for that, David. Now I guess I understand. π
Sounds fine… but I’ve changed my mind anyway – for other reasons.Heck, I may as well say π … since my question here I’ve happened to try BuddySpy, on my YM .. and frankly, I was horrified when I DID actually check a buddy and found she WAS on invisible!
Fine.. but gosh… I realise now I Don’t Want To Know ! πEagle_KiwiMemberUsing the YM-7 Beta CALL function, PK and I can exchange voice messages easily – with excellent voice quality both ways.
We can even talk directly in CALL – but while I hear HIM perfectly, HE hears ME rather patchy/broken. As I have no such problem talking to others, I figure this must be some sort of lag with the “inward” at his end.
(ADDED LATER: We’ve now remedied that! Turned out PK’s mic was UNMuted, which caused bad feedback/echo in Call mode – now muted, now good quality both directions π )But he still cannot connect for voice (in either direction) under Voice Chat mode (under “More Actions – Invite to Conference”) even while I’m in there talking easily with 2 or 3 other friends.
Here’s the full text he gets when using the (old!?) Y! Audio Setup Wizard (which, BTW, seems to me superior to the one they have now tucked away under Preferences in the Beta version):
Wizard could not connect to Yahoo voice chat. The wizard successfully connected to Net2Phone. It appears that ther are problems amking a connection between your ISP and Yahoo Voice chat. Please make sure that you are NOT behind a firewall that prevents TCP connections on Port 5001 and UDP 5055
Neither of us have any idea what all this TCP/UDP stuff is! But he’s had no change even with his ZoneAlarm AND his XP firewall both disabled.
Here also is a similar(?) quote from a Yahoo test page, FWIW:
Information for Network Security Administrators:
Voice chat data packets are sent by this server using both TCP and UDP. TCP packets that are sent to a user’s computer originate from source ports 5000 and 5001. UDP packets that are sent to a user’s computer originate from source port 5000 and are addressed to a port in the range 5000-5010 on the user’s computer.
Depending on the configuration of your firewall (or other intrusion d…. {no more available!}We’re also looking at a section called Detecting Ports Blocked by Your ISP on Steve Gibson’s excellent http://www.grc.com site, but it’s rather heavy going !
PK plans to call his ISP anyway – for guidance (hmmm, HOPEfully π ) – but I wonder if any expert in HERE can offer further suggestions ?
